My First Ride on the Landyachtz Switchblade 38 Longboard

I just rode the Switchblade 38 from Landyachtz Longboards for the first time and it was beyond amazing! I seriously felt like I was snowboarding in Florida, locked in and carving through fresh powder.
The Switchblade is super low and stable which makes it great for downhill skating, and the concave locks in your feet for freeride. Its low, wide standing platform also makes it one of the best boards for cruising and long distance skating. And just for the heck of it, I threw in a touch of longboard dancing and freestyle tricks to see if I could.
I've been longboarding for over a decade now and this board has gotten me back into wanting to slide all the time because it's just so comfortable. I also think it would be the perfect longboard for beginners looking to learn sliding and downhill.
Setup:
Landyachtz Switchblade 38 deck
Bear Grizzly 852 trucks
Mini Zombie Hawgs 70mm 80a wheels
Huge thank you to Justin Bright for the incredible talent behind filming this!
If you have any questions about the board, need skate tips, or suggestions for longboard tricks I should try, feel free to leave a comment here or hit me up on social media.

I have no idea why but other people on KZbin have also experienced this issue with no solution. Anyway I appreciate every comment and I look forward to making more longboard videos! Stay tuned!

Neena, as a 63-year-old guy who has just returned to skateboarding after a 45-year hiatus, I cannot tell you how much I enjoyed watching your video. Your new board is beautiful and you ride it so beautifully. I really love how effortlessly you slide your board to control your speed - THIS is the skill that I am hoping to develop before too long, for safety sake! I'm currently riding a Penny 36" Longboard for my comeback because Penny is what I bought for my son when he was growing up, and it's quite nice for just cruising, but I really do like the Landyachtz line of cruisers and longboards, as well as those by Arbor (local to me in So. California). Thanks again for an awesomeo video. I found it very inspiring! Cheers!

Hi Sean, thanks for your thoughtful comment and I'm stoked to hear that you're getting back into skating! Yes, learning to slide is probably the best thing you can do to keep yourself safe at higher speeds. Make sure you wear safety gear and keep practicing one step at a time, and you'll get there. :) If you need tips you can reach out to me any time. Cheers!

2:32 my thoughts exactly. I was heartbroken when I saw they sold out of the 40" Black Pinecone decks. I checked again one day and the decks were back in stock. I didn't bother waiting to see if they would restock completes. I ordered the deck, trucks and spaceballs (I'm very impressed with their bearings) right then. It's not flashy or colorful. Just a pinecone etched (CNC milled, I'd guess) into a black stained deck, but it spoke to my heart when I saw it. It still speaks to me every time I pick it up to ride. You make it look so smooth and easy! Granted, it's such a smooth board - but longboarding definitely is not easy. At least not at first. That's some beautiful riding that reflects the passion and time put into it. Credit where due - this is some great skate videography as well.

@@NeenaBeena okay I have questions lol cause I’ve been riding as much as I can until the snowboarding season comes. So I’m confident on getting low and pushing all my weight on my left foot. I want to start learning how to do the simple slides (which seem not so simple) so when I am going super fast I don’t bail. Any suggestions honestly with beginning to learn how to do that slide break would be dope.
@NeenaBeena
@NeenaBeena 2 жыл бұрын
@@sophiamarie9457 Hey yeah I would suggest getting slide gloves and learning hands-down slides first, before trying stand-up slides. Putting your hands down gives you more points of balance while sliding and it also takes weight off your board, giving it less friction and making it easier to kick out slides. Get low, carve hard into the slides, and commit to it! Sliding is easier the faster you go, so make sure you get enough speed. And wearing safety gear definitely helps! I suggest at least a helmet, elbow pads, and kneepads when learning. Good luck and have fun!

Thanks! I haven't ridden a major arc board but they look pretty cool. The Switchblade wasn't necessarily designed for pumping, but the Bear trucks that come on it can definitely pump if you lean into it enough. I pump on it when I'm skating long distances and have a slight downhill incline.

Yeah this board can definitely handle cracks and rough terrain, but your wheels will affect that more than anything. The wheels I have on this setup are Mini Zombie Hawgs 70mm 80a and they hold up against bumps and cracks just fine. Really enjoyed the video! Great skating and camera work. I'm trying to decide between a Switchblade 38 and 40... My longboard deck for the last 6 years has been a 40"x8.75" drop through and I've enjoyed it, but I think I want to try something a little more agile/easier to slide with. I'm also 5'6", so the 38" would probably be a bit better suited to my height. I know the general pros/cons of having a slightly longer board (more stability, less agility, etc.), but I guess I'm looking for more of a personal opinion on if I should make the switch to a shorter deck. Could you offer any advice?
@NeenaBeena
@NeenaBeena 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Theo, thanks for watching! I think you should definitely try out the Switchblade 38. I'm 5'5" and the 38 feels great for my size, yet the standing platform still has plenty of space for me to have a wide stance if I need it. It sounds like the Switchblade 38 would be perfect for you to take your sliding to the next level since it's more agile. With how low the deck is and the concave locking you in, you'll still feel super stable on it even though it's a little bit shorter 👍🏽

1:28 was worried I'd have trouble sliding not going really downhill as much as quite a bit of my city is on flat or small inclines but this gives me hope sliding for freeriding is definetly possible Edit: would you have any advice if I want to slide frequently on mild slopes and occasionally some larger ones? Is that feasible to do and still feel that longboarding thrill?

For me as a beginner, definitely yes! Small hills feel bigger on a longboard.
@NeenaBeena
@NeenaBeena 3 жыл бұрын
Hey good question! You can definitely slide on small hills, it just requires a bit of extra effort and planning. As you can see in this video, the hill at 1:28 was small but I was able to slide on it because I pushed fast into the hill to have a high starting speed. The hill at 4:10 was much bigger so I was able to hold out longer slides. If you go on a small hill, you'll be more limited to shorter slides like quick 180s but you can still learn plenty of cool freeride tricks with just a small hill. You can slide on any setup but having the right gear helps. If you're planning on sliding small hills, I suggest you get round-lipped wheels that were made for easy slides. The ones I used here were Hawgs 80a Mini Zombies but there are plenty of similar slidey wheels that will be good for that type of riding. Good luck and let me know if you have any more questions :)

I keep watching your video, so good. How do you like the zombie hawgs for cruising? Can you get a good pump out of them? I'm trying to find a good all around wheel, I want to try doing speed checks, but mostly cummuting pushing/pumping.
@NeenaBeena
@NeenaBeena 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching! These are the Mini Zombie Hawgs which are good for cruising, but they are more geared towards sliding than cruising. You can pump with the Mini Zombies, but because of the big core and round lip (edge of the wheel), they won't have as much rebound to power your pumping as a cruiser wheel with a square lip. I suggest for your type of riding, go for the 70s Hawgs or 70mm Supremes because those have a better shape for cruising, yet they have a stone-ground finish that will help you slide when you want to. If you have any further questions just let me know!

@NeenaBeena

Thank you! :) What kind of riding are you looking to do? The Switchblade is good for beginners but can also take you to a higher level of riding once you're ready. This board is very stable and low to the ground, which makes it easy to push and comfortable when you're just getting started on hills. So I definitely recommend it for a beginner who thinks they might want to eventually try downhill and/or sliding.

I’ve been longboarding for over 10 years so I’ve had quite some practice. Definitely take it one step at a time, skate within your limits, and wear safety gear. Progress can be slow and isn’t always linear so be patient with yourself. Make sure you take care of your body especially when you’re injured. Wishing you a swift recovery! 💕

Hey neena have you tried a dropcat from landyachtz? I'm deciding between that and a switchblade, any recommendations?
@NeenaBeena
@NeenaBeena 3 жыл бұрын
Hello! I have not tried a Dropcat (yet) but it looks pretty fun! The Switchblade has a drop in the deck (making it a bit more stable and lock your feet in for slides) whereas the Dropcat is just a drop-through. The Dropcat also only has 8 plies of maple (vs. 9 plies on the Switchblade) which makes it a teeny bit flexy to help absorb shock which is nice when you're just cruising around and makes the board lighter. I'd say if you just want to cruise around town, the Dropcat is a good choice but if you want to get into sliding and downhill then definitely get the Switchblade.
@TheLongPush
@TheLongPush Жыл бұрын
I have both a Switchblade and Drop Cat. They feel totally different because the Switch has virtually no flex at all. I love both but use the Drop Cat more. It is just so comfortable and easy to ride. What I did do though was swap the Plow King wheels that came with the Drop Cat onto the Switchblade. They work much better on the Switch. The combination of the soft Plow Kings and the flex of the Drop Cat can make it feel 'slugish' to push on the flat. I added some 80A Orangatang 'In Heats' 75mm and the Drop Cat was perfect. Purple Orangarangs work well too. Just something a little harder than the Plow Kings. Now Landy have produced a 'Top Cat' too! Tempted to get one of those as well. More flex.

Is ideal to do donwhill?
@NeenaBeena
@NeenaBeena 2 жыл бұрын
I think the Switchblade 38 is an ideal downhill board for beginner to intermediate riders. It's very stable because of being so low to the ground and the drop provides a good pocket to keep your feet locked in. Some advanced downhill riders prefer a topmount for more precise control over turns. But I don't do any big downhill races; I just like to go a little fast sometimes and the Switchblade is great for that.

Amazing video, I am looking to buy a Switchblade as my first Longboard, as even as beginner i want a quality one fast and accurate, but I have read some comments saying it is a bit heavy for pushing and cruising due to its construction (9 ply Maple). Do you find it heavy compared to other Longboards you know?
@NeenaBeena
@NeenaBeena 3 жыл бұрын
Great question! I don’t think the Switchblade is heavy compared to a typical longboard. It’s made of 9 plies of maple which is the standard construction for a downhill/sliding deck because maple is strong and stiff which helps with stability. There are some cruisers out there that are lighter because they’re made with different materials such as bamboo or because they have less plies, but those aren’t typically ones that are also geared for going fast down a hill. As far as a downhill/sliding board that’s also good for pushing long distance, the Switchblade is a pretty average weight.

I've just started longboarding and got a 40" Rawk 1 board a month ago and it's not that bad to be honest.. Next month I was thinking of getting a 40" Switchblade for cruising and carving as that's all I enjoy.. Do you think that's the board for me..?
@NeenaBeena
@NeenaBeena 2 жыл бұрын
Hmm it depends. A lot of people like flexy boards for cruising and carving because the flex dampens vibrations from the road and helps you dig into the carves. The Switchblade has almost no flex so if you want something flexy I'd suggest the Landyachtz Ripper or Big Dipper. However, the Switchblade is awesome for cruising and carving long distances because it's so low to the ground which makes it easy to push. So if you plan on going on long adventures I'd say the Switchblade is great, otherwise you may want to consider something flexier.

@NeenaBeena
@NeenaBeena 3 жыл бұрын
The Switchblade has deeper concave throughout the board in addition to the drops that lock you in. I’d suggest you go with the Switchblade unless you don’t like boards with a drop. Also the drop cat has a little flex to it so that could be nice if you’re looking for a comfortable cruise in between freeriding sessions. But a stiffer board like the Switchblade is more stable for higher speed sliding.
@kingdrift1136
@kingdrift1136 3 жыл бұрын
@@NeenaBeena For a beginner who is trying to learn which would you choose? More interested in commuting long periods and a little worried about switchblade drop deep W concave can possibly hurt long commute by restricting the foot movement in a negative way, e.g. when pumping which requires constant foot adjustments. Looks like you handled it fine but still unsure on this
@NeenaBeena
@NeenaBeena 3 жыл бұрын
@@kingdrift1136 Hmm the Switchblade concave feels pretty comfortable to me for commuting, but it sounds like the Drop Cat might be the better board for you because the concave is more mellow which can be more comfortable for long distances. The Switchblade being lower does make it a little bit easier to push, but the Drop Cat is still plenty low since it's a drop-through board. I'd say go with the Drop Cat for cruising and then once you improve your skills a bit more you can consider getting a different board for higher speed riding like downhill & freeride. I hope this helps! You definitely can't go wrong with either board :)

@NeenaBeena
@NeenaBeena 2 жыл бұрын
Hey welcome to longboarding! That sounds like a good setup for both downhill and long distance skating since the board is a drop deck. A drop deck makes it low which easier to push and also more stable at higher speeds, especially for beginners. 90mm wheels are really big, which will give you a smooth ride and will help keep your speed going for a longer time. If at some point you want to slide, you may want to try smaller wheels, but you can definitely learn to slide on any setup! Make sure you wear a helmet :) Have fun and let me know if you have any questions
