the diagonal tip saved my life many times. I was longboarding on my campus with my pall we went down this steep hill for the first time and there were these HUGE speed bumps at the bottom I went over them like how he showed in the video since I had watched it a day before. When on the pavement understand that the pavement is primarily for pedestrians and pedestrians should always have the right of way. I know of some people who have the sentiment that pedestrians are the worst because they won't get out of the way or don't hear them, if you're going faster than pedestrians then you need give way and also understand that a lot of people aren't tuned to hear longboards, some people might be tuned to hear skateboards but less tuned to longboards so a lot of people just won't know that you're coming because you aren't producing a sound they recognise - it is then also useful that if you are passing someone it could be useful to call out "passing you on your right" so they are aware to not go right. Also, it's happened to me a few times and to some others I've talked to - for some reason there are some older people who will deliberately step into your path so that you crash into them, they're pretty obvious that they're going to do it but nobody knows why they're doing it, happened to me 3 times 2 of which were the same old man but didn't think it was an issue elsewhere. If anyone can shed some light on this it would be really nice to know

Got my first longboard only this month at age 41, using it for city cruising (Loaded Ballona 70 cm deck, Paris reverse kingpin trucks, Orangatang Love Handles 65 mm 80A, Orange). Never knew skating was going to be such an intense full-body workout. Felt pretty absurd about starting at this age, but already, I love the thing. Last week, I managed my first commute to a neighboring town, 8 km away from my place, and back. Now I need to gain a bit more practice and learn to do just a few basic tricks for the sake of confidence and security (and fun), as well as gradually speeding up. I love how humbly this pro shares practical tips for beginners, thank you for that.

Tip 6 is the best one. Not only applicable to street riding, but also to any type of riding (bikes, rollerskating, skiing, snowboarding...). Always respect and yield preference to whom ever is in front of you. Adapt to their speed and skill level when necesary and find the way to give enough space for the takeover to be safe and forgetable. Very appropriate.

When ever I’m skateboarding and someone’s on the road side of the car or something, I just whistle, it always catches there attention. I’ll do it even if they’re not completely in my way or if I can go around, people are unpredictable and I don’t wanna risk them suddenly deciding to Step backwards into my path for seemingly reason. It also feels like it does a better job of catching their attention then yelling

Tip no.6 is so crucial! Some people will get mad just because it scares them.. I always apolagize and keep it positive. Also to add onto this: try to anticipate the direction of the pedestrians. It's always safer (and more polite) to go behind someones back then to force your way in front of them.

I must have watched this video when it came out 4 years ago because the diagonal tip is easily the most useful thing I've learned since I started skating in my late 20s. The city I live in has a ton of cracks and super spaced out sidewalks and it legitimately helps conserve the most momentum going down them. It also kinda helps teach you how to carve!

Hi kid , these are awesome tips and I use nearly every one you show here in your video. I love my boards and I've been riding since I was 4 or 5 years old , my older brother and I would take wheels of any type and a plank of wood to build a board to hit the hills in our town and many many times we would come home hurt, lol. Thank you brother for these tips. They definitely help more than most realize. Some I had already practiced when I skateboarded so it was easier for me to apply to my longboarding sessions (jumping lightly when riding over cracks etc.) but the main ones like when going over sidewalks is an amazing help that I will keep going back to this video to learn and get better on. Slowly getting the Ollie down and it is going to be the main trick I want to master this year before jumping to anything else. I am definitely subscribing to you man.

I always think back of how Hummers cross large gaps while attacking any kind of surface deviations. As long as it's only one wheel at a time (relatively speaking) that has to deal with the impact, it becomes a lot easier.

Nice! This is actually useful! Even for someone like me that has been cruising and transporting around for so long :)

Whenever I am skating near people I try to call out loudly "on your right" or "on your left" in hopes they at least know where I am coming from. Still have startled a lot of people. Probably still better than just blasting by them. Also, railroad crossing! If you have large enough wheels, and enough speed, lift your nose and give a small hippy jump. Your back wheels will jump up when they hit the rail and most likely be directly under your feet for the landing. Takes some practice but I love the looks from people when I just cruise up to, and past the RR crossing.

7.Always let your trucks straigten out while going over the red truncated domes at crosswalks. 8.Always assume every dog wants to bite you in the ass when you pass by 9. When someone blocks the crosswalk while looking at you with a smile on their face. Fake an out of control run stop that allows you to safely have enough momentum to hit your thigh or hip into the middle of their front fender. Thus leaving them with a helpful reminder to check crosswalks in the future.

pretty much always love longboarding around people because the interactions are interesting and the company feels warm. whenever i'm going past someone, i hope to do all of the work of avoiding them instead of having them handle some of it and move "out of the way". people are generally more predictable with fewer variables to consider --like someone flying past you on a longboard--and when they do move it can often be on the route you were planning on travelling. i also just don't want to bother people to move out of my way; we're both using the path and nobody's more entitled to use it than the other. but when i do need to alert someone, normally i do it as soon as i know that i'll want to, and simply clap. when people are facing me though, i look at them then intently at exactly where i want to go. this, and maybe a knife-hand gesture in the direction i plan to go, usually communicate my intentions. try it out.
