I had one of those! Used to listen to the airband quite a lot and some times the police! Got me into airband listening, but was a few years before i could afford a proper scanner. Thanks for sharing!

You're welcome. They were excellent receivers for its time. Good to hear you had one at the time & it got you further into the radio hobby same as me.

My first portable was on sale for $700. It had 400 channels. My current one has 40,000 channels and a trunk-tracker and was less than $100. Very little has gone digital around here.

Wow.. this was a memory unlock, this was actually my 2nd scanner after my 1st scanner an equally cheap scanner with a useless rubber duck. Great fun listening to the airband my local frequency was London Control Brecon Zone on 133.6 One of the few frequencies never to change in over 40 years. Good for listening to transatlantic flight descending into Heathrow. I miss the old call signs like Cipper, TWA, Dan Air, Jetset.. here we would have British gas coms above the airband, then ham radio, police walkie talkies, traffic police and up to taxis and other 2 way stuff. A. Good old scanner, useless by today's standards but for me hooked in the late 80s. Thanks for the video.

Your welcome. There is still some analogue stuff on the band like Airband & maritime rescue, but other things have moved to digital so yeh difficult recommending an analogue only scanner.

Reminds me of my first car. Well, it wasn't actually a "car" but more of a little- red wagon, but I called it my "car". It hasn't really been long since the encryption on cellular phones was so poor that methods for decrypting the signal were shared on the internet. Even after that happened, companies did nothing to improve the situation for years. I used to listen to phone conversations and set up a sort of trunk tracker to move to the predictable nearby cells as the phone moved. You still needed a digital-to-analog converter and a scanner modified to receive those frequencies.

In North America we had Radio Shack. My entry to radio in general was those multi-band analog radios from Radio Shack. Very similar to the SAB9.

Wow, this takes me back! Our shop used to sell these in (I think) the early 80's. They were popular with schoolboys who couldn't afford afford the synthesised models from AOR, Regency and Tandy (Radio Shack). Tuning was fiddly because of the simple analogue tuning, but they were a lot of fun. They could receive the police VHF band which was mostly traffic police but not the UHF 'personal comms'. I don't remember any faults on them so they must have been pretty reliable. Of course almost everything in the UK has gone to digital (DMR and TETRA mainly) so analogue radios like this are of not much use.

They were great alternatives when we could not afford anything more upmarket. Thanks for watching.
