I have the Featherweight sewing machine that my mother learned to sew on. I also have a card table that goes with it that the machine fits into. My mother gave them to me years ago and told me that I can never get rid of them. Now that she's passed, I had considered selling the machine with the table but after watching your video, I think I'll try cleaning it up and getting her running. Will have to come up with a name. Your video taught me several things - tune up kits are available, i can "date" it and get her back in service. Rather than feeling "burdened" by hanging onto too many things from the past or guilty for having too many machines (I have 4 others) I'm glad i still have her and excited to see if I can get her up and running. Thank you for the inspiration.

I have and am exclusively using my mother's 1963 Singer machine. I looked up on here how to clean and service it and it's still running great! I was considering getting a new one, but they're so expensive and my vintage one has NO plastic parts so way less chance of anything breaking. My mother also taught me to sew on this machine so even after not sewing for 15 years, I could still thread it. :)

I just got my Singer Featherweight 221 a couple days ago. A Featherweight Shop in Kentucky restores Featherweights and then custom embosses them with gold-detailed decals. My decals are of Beatrix Potter’s story, “A Winter’s Tale.” It came tuned up and ready to go! I haven’t yet had time to play with it. Truth be told, I think I’ve been afraid to do so. Tomorrow I plan to do that! Your video was so helpful and encouraged me to play with mine! Thanks! Look forward to more Featherweight tutorials. Have fun with yours! ❤️

I have two American-made 221s (one is 1951 Centennial edition), a 221K 1951 Centennial (w/UK voltage) and a 1956 222K (the free arm version). Also have a tan short bed 301a that uses the same bobbin case and bobbins. The "K" stands for Kilbowie, Clydebank, Scotland. Singer once had the largest sewing machine factory in the world there. It's all been torn down now. Collecting sewing machines can become an obsession. Happy sewing.

Best of luck… I got my 1936 Featherweight about 6 months ago and inherited my mom’s 1910 treadle machine a few years ago. I love, love, love my featherweight… in fact, I have to keep it out all the time, because I can often sew more layers without skipped stitches than my other ‘new fangled’ machines. I can sew through 8 layers of quilt weight fabric and 2-4 layers of batting without an issue -and I usually do that when I’m sewing my quilted bags and need to get the gussets through all those layers. My Elna 730 PRO is a wuss when it comes to uneven sewing like that. If I can shove the fabric under the presser foot, it will sew through it. My friend just gifted me a 70 year old Singer 401 and I took the motor and foot apart and she’s purring too! Welcome to the world of Vintage machines!

I just got one of these, and my stitches were fine. Mine had one owner, and I knew most of the attachments. The one I was surprised by was a cute little joiner foot which also makes french seams! very intriguing. love it. and I love your video. Thanks for making it. I"m 64 and learned on an old fashioned machine, now I have 5 electronic machines so this takes me back with the old presser foot in the back and the old tension knob and fliping the stitch lever up and down to make forward and reverse stitches that we now press a button for. great job.

Love the face plate on yours!! I haven't named my 1953 Featherweight yet--may name her Virginia after my 98 year old mom. My husband recently purchased it for my 70th birthday since I always talked about learning to sew on my mom's Featherweight from the 40's (unfortunately she gave it to a family member who sold it). I was thrilled that mine came with the buttonhole attachment like my mom had--always made the best buttonholes!! So far I love my machine, especially since I remember sewing with my mom at a young age --brings back so many wonderful memories. Hope you have a delightful time sewing on yours!!

Oh you are going to LOVE Clara! I have 2 Featherweights and use them for piecing often. Fantastic stitch quality. My first Featherweight was given to my sisters and I by our grandmother when we were very young. She bought it at a yard sale for $5.00 and it has a lot of the attachments and the original manual. The case is in good condition except for the handle which I'm very careful with and don't use (made a special Featherweight tote to carry mine). I inherited the machine since neither of my sisters sew and am so grateful that our grandmother got me interested in sewing/quilting. We were able to spend quite some time together with our passion over the years for which I'm truly grateful. My second Featherweight is one I bought from a friend that never used it. It is an "M.R." version and sews just as beautifully. Both of mine were born October 28, 1947 which I find interesting as well. One of my favorite classes was a class from Nova Montgomery who taught us how to take the machines apart and clean/lube/oil them and how to keep them running in great condition. If she comes to your area (she is from Texas), try to take her class; she has a wealth of information and knowledge. And yes, The Featherweight shop is great too but I really liked the hands-on instruction that Nova gives. I love how quiet they sew and how portable they are for classes. My Featherweights fit right in with my Berninas and Juki (thanks Erica!)! Have fun with Clara and USE HER!

You have a beauty. She's tiny & powerful! She survived the depression years. The history with these little machines is vast & so much fun! I've had my share of vintage machines & she is one of my favorites! I"m down to 13 machines and I use the ten main ones often for different projects. Only 3 are decor, yet I still throw fabric with a lil oil & they hum along. Do enjoy!

When I was growing up with my sister and 2 brothers my mother sewed all of our clothes on this little Singer sewing machine. I am 76 years old and I look at our family pictures and can't believe the beautiful workmanship that went into our dresses and the boys pants and little suits. It is amazing what you can sew with this little machine. Thank you for bringing back the childhood memories.

Congrats on Clara! My 1941 Singer Featherweight is a beauty! I've decided to revive my love of sewing in retirement. I'd be happy to email you a picture of her. I bought her in the early 1970s from a man at work who was selling it for $15. Over the years, I've mostly used it occasionally for repairs and hems. But, now I'd like to do some simple quilt and other craft projects. A few years ago when we lived in Spokane, WA, there was a sewing repair shop that had been in business for decades that my mother-in-law had used when she sewed out of their house. I'm happy that I got a complete refresh on it. It's working great and has beautiful stiches. I love my machine and hope it will do what I want it to in 2023! I will be watching more of your videos soon. ~ Maureen🙂

I just bought one, and it said on the seller site at eBay that it was manufactured in 1950. I can't wait to start using it. Threading it I haven't a clue, but I did order an owner's manual which is a reprint brand-new one. I've had a New Home, manufacture date is 1887- treadle machine from my grandmother, and it has been refurbished like new, so I gave it to my cousin. My other one is a model 66 Red Eye which needs work, but hasn't been used much from the 1920s. We had Featherweights in high school sewing class and I've loved and wanted one ever since. I love that you named your machine after your grandmother. I may do that too, so her name will be Leona.

Congratulations on "Clara"! You'll have lots of fun researching and testing out those many attachments! The Feather Weight Shop is an excellent source for information, and technical support. When I received my Feather Weight, the first thing I did was get rid of the smell that was in the box. Two days of packing in old newspapers (the newsprint absorbed the worst of the smell), and 3 days of sunshine (to kill any mold spores),then put in a few packaging silicone packs (those that come in shoe boxes, pill bottles etc.) and finally the smell is gone. The next thing I did was replace the original light bulb and purchased "The Feather Weight Shop" LED light bulb. Changing out that bulb made me feel safe that nothing would burn or "blow up".

Erica just a heads up Clara will not be alone for long...it is now an adventure. I have Lena and Bessie (both of my Grandma’s names) who are both Singer FW 221’s, a Singer treadle machine and a Singer 15-91 in an original cabinet. I use them all and totally enjoy it very much. They join my Bernina Record 830 which is now vintage that I got new when I was 15. It all started with one.... enjoy and use her frequently!

Hi Erica, your going to love that little machine. Don’t under estimate it’s size, it is a very strong machine. I have had mine for 20 years and love it. I use it a lot. I take it to my quilt group and I even use it at home. It is so quiet.and a lot lighter than my bernina, I know you will love it. A lot of Quilter’s have at least one. Mine was made in 1935. It is so simple to use. I hope you enjoy it.

Hi! I just got my first featherweight. Her name is Hammie, she was left by her original owner to my bestie (who doesn't sew) . She then gifted her to me, as I have been making masks for over a year. Now I am back to quilting and Hammie now joins the crew. She is white and was made in 1964, in England. I am so thrilled. Thank you, as I am checking out everything online to learn about this darling machine.

I'm saving up for a featherweight, and found your video by searching for videos of them. She's a holy grail life-goal of mine. Will I sew with her? I hope so, but I would be happy just to have one! I'm also looking at a vintage Singer from the 50s and 60s that is that vintage mint green, a machine like my grandmother had. Its got me torn, because I only have room for maybe two machines and I already have a modern machine in my home.

I’m so happy that you’re the new owner of this fine machine. I inherited my mother’s Featherweight, that she bought in 1953. As a teenager, I made many of my own clothes as well as cafe curtains on it. After I was married, and before I purchased my own machine, I borrowed it from Mother to make my goddaughter’s Christening dress. When I made my daughter’s wedding gown in 1994, I used my Kenmore, but sewed several seams with the Featherweight. And like you, the only thing I replaced was the power cord. (Btw, I also polished mine up with car wax...about 20+ years ago).

I do not (I WISH!) have a featherweight machine but I have a 1917 Western Electric Swing out motor machine (I converted to hand crank because the cording is no longer avail) and the more I sew with it the more beautiful the stitches become. I made a lap quilt with it for the first project. YES! I did it all by hand crank even thought the motor still works. We RV during the winter and dry camp (no hookups) so this machine was just perfect to take along. Now ppl will come by and see me working with it and are very curious why I don't just plug it in hahahahaI deff think you got a great machine. Also the little do-hickey at the 3 min mark where you say not "sure" is a seam guide and you use the extra screw for it. I am sure Clara is a welcome edition to your sewing family. Enjoy!

After my mom and aunt died, no one wanted their sewing supplies (!?) so I took it all and ended up with 3 featherweight sewing machines. The machine that was my mother's hasn't been opened since I tried to teach myself to sew in the 80s and seriously messed the machine up. I haven't opened up the other 2 boxes where the machines are still stored so I don't know their condition. I loved this video as it gave me a place to start to rehab my featherweights. It would be great to be able sew on them again. I would love to see more feather weight sewing videos!!

You are going to love her. I have 8 old Singers. I use them on a regular basis. Each can give you a better understanding of how they used them back when they were new. Still learning with my treadle machine and my handcrank machine. Love my Featherweight so much. You will be surprised how much she can sew through with very little trouble. Enjoy the learning.

Congratulations on your new Featherweight. Clara is so pretty now that you shined her up. I have a 1953 Featherweight. I hope you love yours as much as I do mine. Happy stitching on your vintage machine.

I love it , I also have one and I’ve used it many times but I need to get into cleaning and oiling it again! I just love the tiny size of it but I haven’t used it for quite awhile. I have a janome and I love that machine which my husband made a cabinet for me so it’s flush . Congratulations on your new machine, have fun with it!

I have one that was made in October 1953, equal to my age. It works perfectly. These are made to last for centuries!

I just bought a Featherweight and haven’t used it yet. I’m going to now!! I only have one Featherweight, but I have four treadle machines, only one of which is in a cabinet. I do collect child sewing machines and I have eighteen of them. Yes, it’s another rabbit hole to go down if you wish to follow me!!

How charming is that? Glad Jason was able to sync the tension for you. I had one called a National. Tiny little thing but it was a work horse... loved it. Congrats on finding this beauty Erica.

Thank you for this valuable response, Erica! I bought a model 15-91 Singer made in 1941! It wasn’t sewing but my fixit guy cleaned and oiled it very thing and now it purrs like a kitten and stitches look great. This model is totally fear driven, so no belt. I only have the one presser foot and some bobbins. Just bought a manual on eBay. And I ordered the polish and chrome cleaner to make her pretty again, which she deserves. I’d send a pix but I can’t post pics here in the comments. As usual, Erica, YOU ROCK (and so does Singer)!

Awesome! I just bought my Singer Featherweight last week! Mine was commissioned August 15, 1940. You got much more with yours. I will need to be gathering some more accessories. Mine has a gatherer, and a few feet, and 4 bobbins, and a refurbished carry case. Have fun!

Erica- I have to warn you- you are in trouble now- you asked if you would just want one - it is an addiction one is. It enough! The other My family told me I had 20 sewing machines- after arguing with them we counted 17 mostly vintage 😬. I have a few treadle that I use as side tables. My favorites are my 2 FW, Singer 301, and Singer 185 K. I recently picked up a Singer 293b from a secondhand store and donated it to my pastors daughter! I taught her to see and sent her home with a machine! I look forward to seeing you sew on Clara! The I have a husband like yours - he made me the light to get rid of the musty smell of the FW case (which is caused by bacteria from the glue) FW shop has a link to the directions. Have fun and welcome to the FW world!

What a little time capsule!! The metal bobbins bring back memories of my mother sewing my formal dresses as a teen. Looking forward to seeing you sew with it.

I have just bought one from a local sales website and it has been delivered to my home. I’m out of town and can’t wait to get home to unbox! I have a vintage Bernina 801 that I love to sew on, and now this too. My other machine is a fancy Janome - it’s great - all the bells and whistles - but it’s like a computer that sews. The VSM experience is preferable at least to me.

So great! I have my grandmother’s machine. It’s in a case. If my granddaughter shows interest, I’ll let her use it. Imagine using your great-great-grandmother’s sewing machine! She’s only 11 now but is learning to sew.

The original controllers were the Singer carbon disc type with a bakelite housing. If you look closely, the metal one that came with yours is likely a Mercury or Champion rheostat type. They work fine but all Singer controllers have a distinctive Singer badge on the bottom. The original plug that fits into the base of the machine is easily re-wired and is more durable than the current one piece molded replacement cords. I have 3 of these little gems and you need to remove the needle plate and clean out lint ocassionally. Also make sure not to turn the handwheel backwards, thread will bunch up. Yours is beautiful and a case in that condition is very rare. Happy sewing!

Wow! What a beautiful machine! I've watched someone else using one but it was pink and I thought wow, I'd love that pink machine! Although the pink is probably not original. Great find! Can't wait to see your tutorials using it.

I inherited my mother’s FeatherWeight machine, she purchased it from a friend in the 70’s. I remember when she got it, she was so happy to get it. It does work, but I have it on display in my craftroom, and of course I always think of her when I see it.

Oh my, you are going to have to pack it up and send it to me! That’s my birthday. Featherweights always must be sent to the person who has the same birthday. Unfortunately it’s not my year but it’s OK. I’ll happily take it off your hands!💕
