I read Frankenstein for my "spooky" book this month. Had never read it before and loved it. Not what I had expected. Not the biggest Stephen King fan but I've been meaning to read some of his novels some friends have recommended.

I haven't read Frankenstein yet but it is fun to read some spooky reads for October! I'm glad to know you enjoyed it, I may have to pull it off my shelf and read it haha. I was surprised by how much I enjoyed The Shining, I didn't know what to expect with Stephen King and I know his fan base was huge so I was curious but it was hard to know where to start

11-22-63...it's the date of JFK's assassination. King is rather well known, even among fans, for his endings. This book, as many of King's stories tie into his Dark Tower universe. There is a part 2 of sorts to this book, "Doctor Sleep," where Danny is now an adult. If you liked this one maybe look into "The Talisman" that has stronger ties into the DT universe, and has another child hero. The part 2 to that one "Black House" I liked much better than Doc Sleep. But then I never really cared for Danny. :P

Read Stephen King's Fairy Tale. I think you'll love it. It is my current favorite Stephen King. Have to read The Shining.

If you are interested in watching the film adaptation of this, watch The ABC Miniseries first, because, its MUCH closer to the book .Kubricks Movie adaptation of, The Shining leaned into the isolation and the madness that comes with it. Some of the ghostly stuff is in there. Not a lot of context to it, though.

Thank you for the tip, I'll have to check it out, after reading something, I do like to try to watch it if there is an adaptation. I did wonder how the movie would really capture all of the backstory context which lead to his craziness haha

There were things I liked about the book, but ultimately found it really boring (until things go down). Biggest difference between the book and movie i think was that the movie made the dad seem like he was always crazy, rather than just being susceptible to the hauntings of the hotel. Honestly i didnt like the movie either, but its worth watching for the one scene of the wife finding the dads novel and realizing hes crazy. Its not a scene in the book, but its brilliant and terrifying.

Yes, the beginning was rough but once they started seeing things, I was hooked haha. I did find it interesting the book made the hotel the culprit of the dad's craziness, but played on his susceptibility whereas it seems like the movie just has him being crazy. And that scene sounds awesome haha
