Hi Ruan, love your dress, the fabric is terrific. Now I must give you a laugh 😂 When you mentioned you were going to use a sharpie on your dress it brought back memories. Many years ago when women wore hats to church my mother had a favourite mauve / purple straw hat. It got sun bleached!!!! What did she do. She coloured it in with a testa. Unfortunately one day there was a shower of rain when on her way home from church and she finished up with purple hair and purple streaks down her face. We never let her forget it. Just thought you’d enjoy the laugh. Happy sewing 🧵🪡🇦🇺

Thankyou for doing the Collab with Stacey j, I'm her proud mum, who insidently loves chocolate brown and can't quite get to gribs with red and pink together if you remember awhile ago at Racheal fabric clearance, if only I was in the UK. Back to the Collab, your dress looks amazing, and hopefully many hours of wearing. I know Stacey isn't happy with hers, not her style, maybe I will inherit it 😅 sewn beautiful as per usual of her makes, but we do have this happen to us from Time to time. Thankyou for taking part with us down under, once again a really proud mum 🎉❤🎉❤

Massive fan of Style Arc patterns. Don't forget, if you buy one you get to choose a pattern of the month for free! I've never had a problem with lack of instructions as they don't teach you to sew, they assume you already know construction techniques and are just providing you a designer garment pattern. I love them, they are the bulk of my me made wardrobe. I love your dress and you look amazing in it x love from Melbourne, Australia

I don’t think the free pattern is well explained on their website. I met a woman at the fabric shop who loves Style Arc patterns too and didn’t know about the bonus patterns. She has missed a lot of patterns in the year she has been sewing Style Arc patterns.

The stitch line is where you put tailor tacks (takes ages), then take the pattern pieces off, then baste, then fit and adjust. This was how I was taught in the olden days. Even now I am nervous when I don't put the tacks in or draw in the sewing line (depending on type of fabric). I believe you can use one of those wheel thingies also, but I have never used that..Love the dress.

Welcome to Style Arc. You made a lucky first choice because this instructions are positively verbose compared to their older ones which are half a side of A4 or less. I love their patterns and you can rely on them if you are looking to recreate a style because they have a big range. I prefer to have concise instructions. Love your dress - I would have passed it by but it looks stunning in real life!

Your dress is smashing, Ruan! It seems perfect for our hot summer days here in South Carolina. Thanks for your comments on using viscose twill for this dress. I’ll definitely be giving it a try. When you said the instructions had five pages, my first thought was: Wow, they have really improved recently! Thank you, Style Arc! I will be giving SkillShare a try, too. The courses you’ve shown are amazing. I’ve been sewing for a long time, and I still like to learn new techniques. I’ve been wanting to learn Canva, too, so go me! From memory, yes it is cheaper to buy a single size. Am a fan ( though sometimes slightly apprehensive) of Style Arc patterns. I think the stitching line is shown on the pattern pieces, as Style Arc are used to produce patterns for commercial companies, this way the sewer has all the information to hand. I seem to spend a long time sometimes finding details of the seam allowance…. May have to make that dress now😀

Love your dress. I bought the Zalia dress pattern by Style Arc and I made the dress version with round neck and I look hideous in it so I’ve turned it into a pair of Bailee shorts by Tesutti fabrics. 😂. I might try the ‘v’ neck version as I think it will suit me better. For info, I’ve also used the sharpie trick too. 🤷🏼‍♀️

The stitch line for Style Arc is also an indicator of that seams allowance. I measure and make a note, especially around the neck. Sounds like they put that information on your instructions, but not always n the older patterns. Am a fan of Style Arc, their drafting is one of the best I sew. I have made the Logan Shacket in a check wool blend. It is beautiful. I did get caught with the collar and collar stand having a smaller seam allowance though. With Style Arc when you buy a single size you get the pattern size below and the one above so if you don't fluctuate wildly and don't sew for others you still can do some grading or have the other sizes if you fluctuate up or down.
@juliej6638
@juliej6638 Ай бұрын
I was also going to say that. Of course you get them as different files so it's not easy to grade between sizes as you can when they are all printed on one sheet of paper. However if your weight fluctuates you can make a garment in 3 different sizes. 😀 I generally buy the multi-size ones but for some of my older patterns you could only buy single size at that time. Love Style Arc patterns !!!
@theyorkshiresewgirl
@theyorkshiresewgirl Ай бұрын
Ah so if you get one single size you get 3 sizes but on different sheets of paper and not together?

What a stunning dress! Love the colours, too. ❤ I don’t really like the patterns that come with both cut lines and stitch lines, but I think it is done so that you can use tracing paper and one of those tracing wheels to mark your seam allowance. It makes it easier to sew when you don’t have to always keep an eye on the markings on your plate. It can also be useful if the pattern uses different SA, so for instance 1,5 cm on the dress, but only 0,5 cm on the collar. At least I think Andrea described it so in one of her sewalongs for an Atelier Jupe patterns..

This dress looks beautiful on you. The fabric is gorgeous and your construction is very professional looking. You are overly critical of details we can't even see! I promise no one else is going to notice the flaws you see :) I think we're all the same about our finished garments but you should be super proud of this. I do agree about maybe leaving out the pockets next time - just doesn't need them unless you want them, and it's so chic I wouldn't want to carry anything in the pockets that messed with the drape.

Your shirtdress looks fabulous - it really suits you and the fabric is amazing. I'm a huge Style Arc fan. I hardly make anything else - they just have something for every level of sewer and look fashionable. I like the brief instructions. Like you said it's get down to business and sew your seam. The pattern piecing diagram on the print out makes me think of The Sewing Bee where they animate the pattern challenge to show viewers how the pattern should come together.The only real problem I have ever had is with The Byron top - I ended up doing the "Burrito" method [watched a You Tube demonstration] and did this instead of how the pattern suggested and it worked better I think. I personally adore the Sydney dress - the pockets are definitely too low in the original but other than that I love the design and have made 7. Can't wait to see what you make next. I'm currently doing The Blaire shirtdress in the pink fabric we got from BTPD [you made the Dovestone dress] Happy sewing 😎❤

Love your make Ruan. You look amazing in it. I love Style Arc patterns. They are based here in Victoria, Australia just like me and I have been a fan for years. Their block seems to fit me really well without alterations. Did you know that they offer a free pattern which changes every month when you purchase a pattern? This has helped to build my catalogue of patterns. I am currently making the Casey coat and the Texas pants.Looking forward to your next vlog. Liz x

Funny, I never questioned why the stitch line was printed on a pattern. Having used only Big 4 patterns for the last 65 years (!) I’ve never seen it any other way. (Other than way back in the day on old Burda when you had to add the seam allowance. THAT was a pain!) I will say that before finished garment measurements were listed, it made it a lot easier to measure the pattern from seam allowance to seam allowance.

I am glad you like Style Arc patterns. The instructions are a bit more of an order of assembling rather than how-to. But seeing is a lot of problem solving and there are tons of videos online now to help. I think you are very lucky to live in Yorkshire. I was in the city of York in 1999. I loved it there. Love the fabric and your pattern choice.I learnt to sew over fifty years ago with the big four pattern and you used to buy a sewing book of sewing terms to work with it. So,the Style Arc seem normal to me however all your tips and seeing the pattern was so helpful.

I can't speak for Style Arc but if I have the cut line and the sew line I can adjust the amount of seam allowance more easily. With shifty slippery fraying fabric I like an ample amount of seam allowance. I just cut the pattern at the sew line and draw in my own seam allowance. Also comes in handy if you want to do French seams or a different edge finishing if a pattern has only allowed for overlocking. A beautiful dress in a beautiful fabric on a beautiful lady, well done!
