I am shocked that they loosened the safety belts. Believe me. No one will enjoy the broken bones from belts not being tight enough. The object is to make sure your body and head move as little as possible. In a wreck the body stretches. So there will be some movement of the drivers body. But not as much or as forceful as the movement that would happen from loose belts. Think of what does the deed in a hanging. It's not the bodies movement but the stop at the end, that does the job.

As an American, we do not claim Speed for his ignorance and inability to properly downshift. Come to car centric/culture cities like Los Angeles etc. and many drivers know manual shifting. The U.S. has many different states with their own laws and cultures, so “Americans be like” doesn’t really hold up - unless for satire. It also looks like the TCU has some sort of anti-stall / auto downshift for very inexperienced drivers like Speed. However, many times he was lugging the engine too much and the TCU was giving/gave up.

When speed asked the guy to loosen the seatbelt cause it was too tight knew he didn't know anything about formula racing (after u break a couple times it will make space, if ur not super tight from the get go you'll just move around after a few turns).
