There's a deeper meaning behind this song: It isn't a far stretch to believe that Freddie's relationship with Montsie was part of the reason he lived so long after the onset of his AIDS condition. It's even easy to believe that she was an "angel" brought into his life at just the right moment, to help him fulfil his lifelong dream of recording opera, and to be a "mother/sister" figure that he could confide in.... He kept his AIDS diagnosis secret from the rest of the band until 1989 - and he NEVER told his parents/sister - but, he confided in Montsie/told her about it in 1987. (When they were working on "Barcelona" and the accompanying album, she was excited about them performing the song together at the 1992 Olympics which would be held in Barcelona... Freddie told her that he wouldn't be able to perform it with her, because he would be gone by then.)😪 After Freddie was gone, other singers asked Montsie to do duets/collaborations with them too; she always said NO, because it wouldn't be the same as with Freddie. And when his life-sized statue was being dedicated on the shore of Lake Geneva in Montreux, Switzerland, Montsie was there at the ceremony with Fred's Mum & Dad, comforting them.

She was the world's most famous Opera Diva. You pronounce her name "Mon -Sir- at" "Cab ba Lay". That's as close as I can sound it out! LOL Freddie loved opera and went to an opera performance and saw her and his assistant said Freddie's mouth just dropped open! He loved her voice. when Freddie was being interviewed, he mentioned on the radio that she was his favorite singer and he would love to sing with her sometime. He didn't think anything would come of it, but some of her people heard it and told her. She had her people call Freddie's people and they agreed to meet in her hometown, Barcelona, Spain. They hit if off right from the start. Freddie wrote the opera song, Barcelona and it was chosen to be the official song of the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona. Sadly, Freddie died in 1991, but the song was still played. Monserrat Caballe sang her part and Freddie was on a screen singing his part. The song hit the charts! Monserrat loved Freddie so much she wanted to do a whole album. Freddie wrote the entire thing and the album is titled Barcelona. You should check out Barcelona next. There are lots of videos online about their friendship and collaboration. 1st time Rock music and Opera came together. It was magic!

To be pedantic: she was Spanish, so her surname should be pronounced Cab-ba-yay. She was one of the great sopranos of the modern era. Check out her ‘Barcelona’ with FM - sends chills down your spine. I love your reaction. You ‘get it’ all right.
@barbaratucker64342 жыл бұрын
@@richardbrookman6415 , yes, I knew she was Spanish. That's why they met in Barcelona and Freddie even wrote their hit "Barcelona" . I was only going by the way I've heard her name pronounced. "Cab-ba-lay". You could be right.
@richardbrookman64152 жыл бұрын
@@barbaratucker6434 I was adding (in a spirit of being helpful) to your post, rather than criticising. My comments about ‘getting it’ referred to the OP, not you. I’ve heard her name pronounced in both ways, but both Americans and Brits sometimes mangle foreign names. Cab-ba-yay is how she would have pronounced her own name. As for Freddie, I have come a bit late to him. For some reason I didn’t listen to Queen when I was younger, but I’ve listened to a lot lately, mainly because of his tremendous voice. Huge range and control, one of the best.

On 8 October 1988. La Nit festival in Barcelona was staged on the occasion of the arrival of the Olympic flag from Seoul for the Barcelona Olympic Games in 1992. This was the first crossover between a rock singer and an opera diva in the history. Montserrat mentioned, that it was a great service towards the people who never listend to opera before, because their collaboration definitely increased the popularity of this genre. She remembered to that night this way: "While he was singing, I noticed that his eyes were shiny with tears. I gave him my hand. He clasped it and kissed it. It was clear he was suddenly aware of his own fate. They were tears of farewell. It was his goodbye, at least to the stage."
@AliT05552 жыл бұрын
Because Freddie’s vocals are so exceptional people seem to forget what a brilliant musician/composer he was. That he was able to compose (with the help,of Mike Moran and Tim Rice) the songs he performed with Montserrat is amazing when you consider that he didn’t have a background in classical music. Besides Barcelona, which was performed during the opening ceremony of the 1992 Barcelona Summer Olympics, you should also do Golden Boy, Freddie’s brilliant fusion of opera with rock+gospel+soul.
@robertnichol36692 жыл бұрын
Freddie was sooooo nervous and practice hours a day running up to that..saw an interview where he talked about it and said she (Montserrat) intimidated him. Freddie was a huge opera fan too (duh)....lol But he said something to the effect of "I had something to prove, That I could step on stage with her. But for her, she had a fun night out" lol
@flav2689 Жыл бұрын
Completely understandable - he was a great singer but it’s not an easy song. And he wanted to do his best…it wasn’t like he was performing with some mediocre soprano, nope… It was La Superba, for God’s sake. 😂 For Montse, with all her technical background and the decades of practice it was more like a liberating and fun experience. She enjoyed it very much as you can see here🥰

From the base of the Venetian towers I could see this masterpiece. Today, when I walk by the fountains I can feel the same magic as that day. I cried when Freddy died, for the end of Queen and for never seeing that duo again at the Olympic opening show with our Montserrat and our city in the background. @@DoIttMiaaaa Yes Exercises in Free Love shows Freddies operatic talent. He can go almost as high as Montserrat, so much so people thought this was her, however it was the demo he sent to her when he asked to collaborate with her to create Barcelona album, which in turn, they used the demo he sent and recreated it with words, with Montserrat taking the high notes and Freddie the lower ones. But if you listen to "Exercises in Free Love" it's ALL Freddie. There are no words, just his musical notes with the piano and he sounds nothing short of an Angel singing from Heaven itself. I listen to it when my anxiety is high and calms me. I hope you take a moment and listen to it; you won't regret it. I think the best one to listen too when you look it up is the one that shows him sitting in formal attire. Any version is beautiful though :)

This is a link to Freddie Mercury and Montserrat Caballe. She is a well-known Italian opera singer. Freddie was a long time fan of Opera. In particular he felt Montserrat had the best singing voice of any opera star. She was from Barcelona. The song had to be completed by 1988 to be considered for the openingma ceremonies of the 1992 Barcelona Summer Olympics. Freddie told her 2 two years prior to his death that he would not be there to sing it with her because he had AIDS. From what I have pieced together she was the first person that he told even though his bandmates were seeing symptoms in him. The gentleman conducting the orchestra is Mike Moran and not Brian May ( you my be reacting to a different performance of Barcelona) have a different clip than the one most people react to. Not that that matters they're both awesome in and of themselves. But in the other one the conductor does look like Brian May because of the hairstyle and it's at night). So it could be the same gentleman conducting the orchestra but during the day you can tell it's not Brian May.. People get confused because they have similar hair styles.
