Freddie wrote this piece for the two of them and afterwards he and Montserrat became great friends until his death. Imagine the works that could of been made if he had lived longer. Truly two awesome singers we were privileged to have seen in our lifetime. Brava.

Freddie could always sing this way. He could sing any way he wanted.And he wrote this song, this whole album, for and to sing with Montserrat at her request. He adored her for years before they met, and she adored him, they were meant to meet and collaborate before his death. It was written in the stars.

On 8 October 1988. La Nit festival in Barcelona was staged on the occasion of the arrival of the Olympic flag from Seoul for the Barcelona Olympic Games in 1992. This performance was playback, because of the perfection - as you mentioned -, and the lack of time for rehearsing, Montserrat's calendar was full for the next few years. Freddie was so much more than a rock singer. This was the first crossover between a rock singer and an opera diva in the history. Freddie and Montserrat became good friends very quickly, they adored each other, and Montserrat was brave enough to take the risk of singing with a rock star, because she recognized The Musician in Freddie instantly. There are 2 more songs at La Nit 88. The Golden Boy (that is even more dramatic) and How Can I Go On, worth to check them out.

That's good info.👍 I really was a bit pissed that a lot of people,also other reactors,treated this concert as a LIVE one and that's absolutely not true. They are both great singers but, live this would not sound as full as it sounds. The music industry is ff up even the last Lady Gaga and Celine Dion at the olympics was NOT live.It's a bit sad.

Two musical anomalies bringing two unlikely genre's together for the first time and the result is absolutely breathtaking. This was a dream come true for Freddie, he adored her and he wasn't afraid to take a chance to step outside his comfort zone and stepped into her world. How can I go on is my favorite of their duets the emotion, the deep friendship between them is palpable. Music you didn't know you needed but will never forget ❤

Oh Sweet Basement Cat, this one hits sooo true, I love every Queen song, but THIS. Can you believe that during repetitions, Montserrat Caballé actually asked Freddie to take a couple of steps back, because his voice was so powerful ? Freddie was a classicaly trained singer, he loved Opera, and went to several performances by Montserrat Caballé. The cantatrix was surprised to see groups on journalists mobbing that one man in the audience, Freddie had the taste to leave his outrageous outfits out when he came to her performances. So * SHE * invited * HIM * backstage after a performance. Freddie was in heaven. He had this song running around in his head for a long time already, but it missed something. That something was Montserrat Caballé. They became true, best friends, loved each other (in a platonic way, it must be said, Freddie had too much respect for her to try anything, and it was mutual), and they gave us this masterpiece that will transcend eternity, and a full album intended for just the two of them.

When I met Montserrat for the first time, I immediately felt in LOVE with her! Really! Hard to explain, but I got Fred and knew what he ment and why he wanted to record/perform with her! Hard to describe, but ... She was much older than me, not my type of girl (if you know what I mean), BUT ... god damn! I loved her from second one!!! And I miss her ... and that's like 25 years ago ... *RIP_MY_LOVE Her live concert was just out of this world and is in the top 100 concerts I've attended to! I can't rank it correctly, because in 30+ years of music industries and 10,000+ live concerts, it's hard to do a list, because of age, time, experience, etc. ... but yeah: SHE!? o_O Top 10 for sure! ♥ Thanks for your reaction!

There is so much to admire about Barcelona. Firstly, it's essentially a platonic love song, not something you get very often in the music world. It's all about these two remarkable talented people who've fallen in love with each other & their respective talents as friends. Freddie managing to compete with Montserrat vocally is a testament to his vocal prowess. Montserrat giving so much of that unique pretty sounding "flutter" that she had in her head voice that made her voice so unique even in the realm of iconic opera divas. The chemistry between them both on stage, these two people adored each other. It's perfection in a song.

Emma, You have such a good ear… You’re correct that this album was originally recorded with a lot of synth instead of live orchestra (except for the piano). But then LATER, a remastered/remixed “anniversary” edition of the album was redone and released, where a live orchestra WAS recorded for the backing instrumentation, replacing the synth!

@JaneRtnАй бұрын
Freddie didn’t collaborate with Pavarotti- at the time this was the first ever cross over rock - opera. After this and indeed after Freddie’s death there were others . Also at the time there were the inevitable voices that dismissed the concept but the success of Freddie and Montsy probably showed not just the commerciality of the idea but also bringing more fans of each genre into the other. It was Sid Vicious (sex pistols) who dismissively said to Freddie “are you still bringing ballet to the masses” - Freddie did that and opera!! There’s more to that story cos Freddie wasn’t afraid to stand his ground (definitely not afraid to get physical should the need arise!! ) -a tale for another day 😂

on this album there are songs where you can hear freddie singing in real opera style. the song which comes to my mind is called „ensueño“. you will be mind blown by fred’s opera style here. at one point fred got an offer from montserrat to sing the classical opera-piece „la traviata“ with her in an opera house because she in an interview stated she recognised he could pull it off but denied it because he thought his fans wouldn‘t want to hear that from him being like a betrayal to his fans.
