ACSS is a three-part concept album that is "designed to bring the world closer to the apocalypse every time it is played." It tells the story by the prophecy of The Hierophant who speaks of a Worm crawling from the filthiest bowels of humankind, that grows into the Antichrist Superstar his wings being his stardom that propels him into godhood, and when the world has finished rejoicing in its own end, he eventually becomes equally revered and hated as The Man That You Fear. Like a cruel cosmic joke from God to do his dirty work for him and then punish his very existince as a reward. Crypt-Orchid is more of a track than a song because it signifies the point in which the worm begins to grow into an asexual human being. Cryptorchidism is a condition where one or both testicles fail to descend into the scrotum. Fun facts: Little Horn is word for word a dream Manson had about the end of the world, Cryptorchid is about his coming of age through the depravity he witnessed from his Grandfather so they go hand-in-hand. When they recorded Minute of Decay he was crying over how his life was falling apart. Untitled (aka Track 99) has lyrics both forward and backwards, If you play it at 300% slower you can hear parts of lyrics from Mister Superstar. If you play it backwards you hear "When you are suffering know that I have betrayed you" which is a line from Aleister Crowley's book "The Book of Law". Meaning Manson was actually attempting to embue this record with apocalyptic energy by recording a piece in history as if it already happened. Anyone who performs magic knows that this is key in manifestation. My personal fave is Angel with the Scabbed Wings. I rock out to that one constantly and seeing them perform it on the ACSS tour was one of my concert going highlights of all time!

This was my most played album ever. I was 12 when this came out I literally played it on repeat for a long time. It’s also the first cassette I ever bought with my own money, actually had to have my brother buy it for me since I was too young. This is MM at his prime, Mechanical Animals is another great album from Manson which I recommend.

Interesting fact: The last track is actually track 99 on the CD. Tracks 17-98 are just 3-5 seconds of silence. As a kid I found that pretty cool. Also scary if you left the cd running and forgot about it. Really enjoyed this reaction, it was one of my favourite albums as a teen and still gets played often now.

I'd say Mechanical Animals and Holy Wood are crucial to listen to, the 3 albums were purposely made as a trilogy. Although it can be a surprise how different they are, plus by the end Manson said the trilogy actually worked backwards, with Holy Wood as the beginning and Antichrist Superstar as the end. After that, it's quite a rollercoaster, there's some great tracks and some very dark personal stuff. Pale Emperor is perhaps his most famous and most critically acclaimed more recent album.

I loved that someone reacted to this album nowadays! I don't know if you know this but, this album it's partitioned in like 3 parts, every one with a philosophical meaning, and the next 2 albums with this one, makes a trilogy, each album with different meaning, like a trip for parts. It's just art. And by the way, the last "song" untitled, it was really a hidden song back in the day, the album have 99 tracks on it, and when you finish Man that you Fear, there's a one second silence track until 99, and this one begins. Really dark and creepy. The sound is so special. I strongly suggest you to see the videoclips!

Yes brings back memories! Also worth noting the album is cyclical. When you are suffering know that I have betrayed is the final utterance on the hidden track and the first phrase before Irresponsible Hate Anthem, which is appropriate for the ritual and apocalyptic themes of the record, like a cycle of rise, destruction, decay, rebirth (whether that be on the personal, collective or even cosmic level).

Mechanical Animals is especially crazy because Manson goes full David Bowie on that album, and it’s pretty much a goth/glam rock album. It’s actually surprisingly gorgeous in many parts.

This album is a classic! MM (band) and ACSS don't get the recognition they deserve. This is a masterpiece from every angle (production, songwritting, visual art). I remember when this was released. Such an impact, especially cultural! You could see MM's influence everywhere. From movies to music. From Green Day to Christina Aguilera. Not only that, after the grunge hangover and the modest simplicist mindset that was left from it, MM was the band that brought back the "great rock shows", as in the classic golden times. Manson was also the exact opposite of the anti-vedetism, anti-exuberance, low profile mindset that was installed because of grunge. There was a sense of danger in the air. Great times, amazing album.

His best album in terms of songwriting. Mechanical Animals is probably his best sounding and probably his peak as a musical act but as a personality, a figure of counter culture and shock, Antichrist Superstar is his best foot forward. I think it's really Marilyn and Eminem who are the last inciting musical acts before the new media age and culture we find ourselves in where nothing is shocking and everything is controversial. Before that fatigue, imagine a still very conservative 90s landscape where a gangly rasp throated pale figure barks and screams about the hypocrisy and abuses of Christian faith and dogma, and the corrosion of American idealism to ear grating industrial rock along side visual imagery of horror, perversion, and victimization. It was as awesome or as terrible as it sounds. The album reflects that beautifully. Before Fight Club made hitting your personal rock bottom cool, there was Antichrist Superstar. I dated a "Manson Girl" for a bit, she decided to carve his name into her chest with a razor blade.. you know for fun? It's definitely an album with a ton of layers both in production and subtext. I think Marilyn (like many artists) lost the plot as time went on, between success and drug abuse and trying to embody some sort of fictional character, he lost the writing that made him both provocative and relatable in his early work. This is a no skip album for me, it's an experience. I know during its writing the members experimented with sleep deprivation among other things, and you can get that sense of mania and desperation as the album wears on. Trent Reznor's influence as both a producer and rival to Manson also pushes it to the limits. May be blasphemy to say but I think Antichrist Superstar is superior to The Downward Spiral, and I'd bet money that pisses Trent off till this day. It's probably a top ten all time album for me, one of the best industrial rock albums for sure, and at his peak, Manson was the last great rock provocateur before it all went cringe. This was honest degradation. It was mean, and loathing, and devoid of answers to any its introspection. It's a beautiful self-tear down of the individual. It's a biting commentary at the complacency of the moral majorities in the face of neglect, abuse, lust for power, and bigotry. But it's never overt or on the nose, it's poetic, it's nuanced, it's specific in its trauma (Kinderfeld). I'm looking forward to your reaction, this is not a one time listen if you enjoy it and it does lend itself to being in an altered state to experience further though obviously people should be responsible. That being said, there are some hidden doors in this album that unlock under certain circumstances is all I'll say. ✌️ and ❤ as always Molly, you're the best.

my friend Scott (Daisy Berkowitz) did the guitar work for a lot of these songs. His style was so unique and alien. I miss you Scott! 😥🙏 BE IN PEACE Also, Pogi, the keyboardist and sound engineer is largely responsible for the atmospherics of these records. And his most godlike work is on the follow-up album Mechanical Animals. He gave the music so much of its magic. This band is one that needs to be studied in the way you would get into Pink Floyd, lots of lore and drama and meaning.

They were directed by Floria Sigismondi, and she really reflected the horror and sinister feeling of MM's music into the videos. Oh my soul sings watching you react to this album🤘 I remember when this came out and how music was truly changed for me by this album. The untitled track was a "hidden" track on the album. One of the most played albums in my life. I would have probably started with "Portrait of an American Family" and "Smells Like Children" but "Antichrist" is my favorite. I am LOVING that you are speaking of THEM because they were probably the latest real rock 'n roll band in the old sense - the whole band and each one of their elements were on fire... it's a wonderful record with a ton of hidden layers and "easter eggs" thanks to Madonna Wayne Gacy , the keyboard player who made sure to help Manson with the album concept as well, he pulled out some of the weirdest shit you could think of (including the screeching tone on The Beautiful People and the keytar solos all over the album) - make Trent Reznor the producer and be sure these will be inside the album. The vocals are pure cinema, Manson changed so many registers it is sincerely frightening to hear his versatility.

This is Manson's best album by far. The music, the lyrics, the production, their shows at that time, the way Manson and the whole band looked... This was his/their prime, I think they were the best band in the world then and their influence was huge. No other Manson album sounds as good as this one, Reznor's production was as good as for his NIN's albums of that era, but adapted to Manson's own style. He didn't really produce their previous album "Portrait Of An American Family", that one was produced by someone else first and Manson didn't like the way it sounded, so he asked Reznor to "fix it" and that's why he is credited as the producer, but ACSS was the first album where Reznor was the producer since day one and the band had much better songs, so it was a really big quality jump, this is when they really got serious to make a true masterpiece. Their next album without Reznor is very different but it's probably their second best. However there were many people that didn't "get it", the whole glam colourful bowiesque alien stuff, many fans wanted him to go back to the dark stuff and in my opinion he/they never was/were as good as he/they was/were in the ACSS days. Holy Wood was a poor intent of making ACSS 2.0, trying to link it to the previous better albums with the Triptych excuse that he clearly made up while he was writing it. It's still a nice album with a few good songs, but not as good as the two previous ones imo. And he just got stuck forever on this dark goth satanic stuff, he also had too many problems with the abuse of certain substances and booze, and kind of ruined what could have potentially been a much greater career. Album order from best to worse imo: 1 - Antichrist Superstar 2 - Mechanical Animals 3 - The Pale Emperor/Portrait Of An American Family 4 - The High End Of The Low (I think "I Want to Kill You Like They Do in the Movies" is probably their best 21st century song). 5 - Holly Wood 6 - The rest.

I'm a big fan of Portrait Of An American Family. Love that album, but his best album was Mechanical Animals. Lots of really interesting electronic beeps and bobs. Steve Putesky wrote the riff to Tourniquet from this album. It's such a sick riff. He wrote alot of the riffs on Portrait like Cake And Sodomy. Great reaction again Molly.

Another band to check out for Halloween (Besides Slayer and Marylin Manson) Glenn Danzig era Misfits! They are a combination of Horror and Punk, especially during the Glenn Danzig era.

I saw Manson live back in 1997 in Newport Centre, Wales, UK. I remember he downed a bottle of wine on stage, smashed it and the cut his chest all open so blood was pouring out. Then he went to.the front of the stage and shouted "spit on me" and everyone in the crowd gobbed on him 🤣 I was only 16 and was drunk as hell. I thought for years after did I imagine this. But actual video of the whole concert is on KZbin and he did do it haha nutter! Great album this was.

Oh...this is going to be fun. This album was my teenage years. This is his best work, IMO. And probably even more controversial and relevant now than it was when it was released. Irresponsible Hate Anthem is one of my favorites on the album, and while I completely understand why you edited it the way you did, I think it does take away from the point he's trying to make with the lyrics, but I do get that many people don't have the depth to deconstruct the song meaning.

This was such a huge album. My parents had heard so many things from the media that they didn't want me to have or listen to it. So I would hear it with friends, and sneak around with a tape (cassette) of it as a taboo item. So dark, heavy, and weird. And his voice, the way you described it as being dead or decaying is kinda spot on. A self fulfilling prophecy of an album as he really did become the antichrist superstar.

That was and super important album for me in my school years, super glad you finally came to react to MM. Idk if it's going to be much requested, but listen to his debut Portrait Of An American Family. It's more rock driven, and as experimental as Antichrist Superstar!

Great reaction! It would be great to see some Machine Girl on this channel, they are not very famous but they are pretty good, it is a kind of mix of electronic music with hardcore punk,quite strange but interesting, I recommend their most recent album MG ULTRA
