It’s so surreal having Ghost be one of those metal bands for the last two years (+ Metallica & Deftones weirdly) to have won over a new slew of fans thanks to social media & pop culture. I love the old school 70s early 80s heavy metal vibe that Ghost has (kinda like Mercyful Fate, Danzig, Black Sabbath & so on) & looking forward to hearing your thoughts on Meliora, the third (& best) album by them, though this is a really good debut & you can see why they got buzz right from the off :) Edit: 🎃👻🎃👻

Ghost is my favorite band, so I'm stoked that you're listening to them! As someone else said, you immediately understood Ghost and what they're about. There's a few things I noticed that you got spot on. The first is that you mentioned how Prime Mover almost sounds like a baby being born, and you're right! Opus Eponymous is a pseudo concept album quite literally about the conception of the Antichrist. The whole album has sexual undertones. Ritual is about the start of the conception ritual, and the sexual undertones go on throughout the album culminating in the Antichrist's birth in Prime Mover and Genesis. The Japanese exclusive bonus track for Opus Eponymous is a cover of The Beatles' Here Comes The Sun, but switched to be Son instead. The second thing is something you didn't seem to notice, and that's during the chorus of Death Knell. The first chorus says "six six six," but the second chorus changes it to "sex sex sex." The third thing is that you noted that the album, and especially on songs like Satan Prayer and Death Knell, switch tempo repeatedly, leading to this back-and-forth sound. And guess what, it's sex again. The album deliberately does that to mimic the motions and rhythms of sex, especially during the extended ending of Death Knell. Overall, you hit the nail on the head for this album. Despite not knowing anything about the band, you managed to correctly get the very same impressions that was intended by Ghost. That's what makes their music so brilliant. Even without digging too much into the concepts of their albums, the sound alone tells the story for you in a way that really compliments the lyrics. It's this perfect blend between sonics and lyrics, but it's so well put together that you can get the imagery even if you only focus on one aspect. I'm super excited to see you dive into the rest of their discography! Without spoiling much, you'll be very surprised by the directions Ghost goes in. Tobias Forge has made some very diverse and prolific music, diving into countless genres and styles, spanning across decades worth of rock, metal, and pop influences.

Awesome reaction! Props for paying attention and giving a proper analysis of each track! As many others have said, you definitely "got" Ghost, and allowed yourself to be immersed in the vibes While i absolutely agree that their production and musical evolution are incredible and for the better, Opus is the album i listen to front to back most often. It's just got this retro, heavy, dark, brooding aura; it's super atmospheric, as you mentioned I agree you should continue in order. Infestissumam is a huge upgrade on both fronts and retains the dark tone :)

They are objectively outstanding at everything they do, but I'll always be primarily a first-album Ghost fan. This album is just so masterful and concise and utterly effective in the styles and sounds that they synthesize. When they first started appearing around 2010, I just couldn't believe what I was seeing and hearing. They are absolute masters of pastiche. I hear Blue Oyster Cult, Sabbath, NWOBM, early 80s Roky Erickson, I swear even ABBA (the driving disco part of Satan Prayer!). They are great at incorporating ominous chromatics into the compositions, and yet they are still so highly melodic and catchy. And speaking of catchy, their guitar solos are so tasty! Not flashy, but just perfect. They generally choose a bigger more bombastic sound for future records (and definitely get more experimental), but this one has my favorite arrangements and production. I actually think the limitations of the first record served it extremely well.

I think you may enjoy the album "Caligula" by Lingua Ignota (Real name Kristin Hayter, she's since dropped the Lingua Ignota name) The album is pretty dark and heavy, in more ways than just the sound. Awesome melodies, some very noisy, crushing sections and tons and tons of atmosphere. Kind of modern classical mixed with extreme metal and a gothic feel. Ghost's first 3 albums are all theme/concept albums telling the Antichrist's story in a trilogy. Opus Eponymous is about conceiving and birthing the Antichrist. Infestissimum is when he finally ascends to power on Earth. Meliora tells stories of his brief reign before ultimately being destroyed by God at the end in the song called 'Bible'. The next two albums don't even mention Satan again as they're about the Bubonic Plague/Medieval civilization (Prequelle), and the fall of once mighty empires (Impera)

Wow. Thanks for this! Sorry for the long comment, but in case you want to know more... I found Ghost last year with their latest album, Impera. I am a guitarist and thought rock had died, or morphed into a world of uniform growly vocals and high-gain guitar shredders... I quickly became obsessed. I worked my way backwards to their first album, this one, and I love them all, in their own way. Ghost are so intriguing and tongue-in-cheek. The idea is that they serve the 'Ministry', a mysterious dark organisation trying to overthrow churches and governments with satanic music dressed up as catchy rock (unlike modern heavy metal, which won't convert anyone to the Dark Side 😆). It's a hilarious and silly back-story and lore. Each album is different, sort of an evolution. With each one, the singer/writer/mastermind Tobias Forge (who was anonymous until he was outed in about 2017) takes on a different front-man anti-Pope persona. He writes almost all the music, even the guitar solos, with some collaboration in earlier stuff with Martin Persner, one of the live guitarists who left in about 2017. In the studio, on earlier albums, Tobias played a lot of the stuff himself - guitars, bass etc. His vocals get better and better as albums go on - he was apparently not a singer at first. And the live players are different from the studio ones - so you could argue, it's not really a 'band', more a project. Members were anonymous till about 2017, when there was a lawsuit. They have all changed except Tobias. Albums: *Opus Eponymous* - sung by Papa Emeritus I (it's a joke - 'Emeritus' indicates 'honorary' or Retired, and retired Popes are generally dead 🙂) *Infestissumam* - Papa Emeritus II ('Segundo') - still dark and satanic. Has the fabulous *Year Zero,* though live versions are better. Also the truly hypnotic *Monstrance Clock.* *Meliora* - Papa Emeritus III ('Terzo') - this is a masterpiece, IMO. Contains the iconic song *Cirice.* And the wonderful *Absolution.* *Prequelle* - Cardinal Copia. Still a great album, maybe my third favourite. Some proggish rock on this one, some out-and-out pop-rock, some straight heavy stuff. E.g. *Faith, Rats.* Also one of my favourite songs, the beautiful *Life Eternal.* *Impera* - Papa Emeritus IV, who is just Copia promoted. This is also a masterpiece in my book, but quite far removed from Opus. You would be surprised. It's my favourite because it's the first I heard. A definite '80s arena rock vibe, but with modern heavy guitars in drop D or drop C tuning (as is most of Ghost). I struggle to highlight any specific track. Only one had me stumped for a while. I don't subscribe to the theory that 'the earliest stuff was better' and 'they sold out'. Tobias' lyrics are deep, multi-layered, poetic, dark, funny, satirical. For some reason, it speaks to the alienated as much to those who just love good rock music. It's all good in my book. And don't forget the EPs.... I haven't even mentioned them...

If you review Meliora, be sure to listen to a version that has the song Square Hammer on it. The original release doesn't have it, but it's one of their biggest hits and works as the true and better closing track imo, though I think that version of the album also has a some cover songs that follow after it on the tracklist, since they were originally part of a separate EP called Popestar.
