Maybe she tried but she wasn't clear enough. Sometimes you can assume people (especially kids) will know what things mean even though there's no reason they would. She might have told her that she would get her period some day and that it was just a normal part of getting older, but hadn't thought to properly define what a period is.

My first period was a month before my 12th birthday as well. I was at my aunts house when I went to bathroom and saw some blood, I didn't know what to do so I waited until the next morning to ask my dad to get me pads. I went downstairs into the living room and waited for him to get up and when he did I told him, he immediately went to the store and bought pads for me. My dad was and is still so uncomfortable with periods but I have to subject him to it because he's my only parent 😂

They could have been friends, they could have known each other through mutual friends, they could have had classes together, they could have done extracurricular stuff together. As for a date, they probably just "hung out," at school, at home, or "around." That's what I did when I couldn't get out to go on a date.
