Hello and welcome to my first ever playthrough of Metal Gear Solid, brought to us by the PS5 Master Collection! I remember my brothers playing MGS when we were young, but I realize I really don't remember much apart from certain sounds, and I think they mostly played MGS 3. So you can consider this a blind playthrough!
This is a thorough playthrough with lots of talks about the characters and what I think of them, my own theories on the story and so on, so if you're interested in that, subscribe for more and like the videos if you enjoy! It helps a lot with growing the channel ❤️

Snake? SNAKE?! SNAAAAAKE! Welcome to my first ever playthrough of Metal Gear Solid! So excited for this new series! Jumping into older classics is such a nice feeling. Some of the sounds are a bit nostalgic for me, but apart from that, I'm going in blind and having no idea what the gameplay and story are like. Yes! MGS3 is one of the greatest games of all-time; everything is perfect: the story, the characters, the soundtrack, the sound design, the cut-scenes, the game-play, the boss fights... the ending, jesus! Can't wait 'til you get there. But until you do... yeah, it's a fun game (series) with an interesting story that never takes itself too seriously. I hope you delve back into a few other older classics... but the MGS series is gonna consume so much of your time, I assume you're gonna try to knock out 1-5? (Plus... Peace-walker? I honestly found Acid and Acid^2 to be quite enjoyable as well, although they're not really canon. 1, 2, 3, and 5 are all worthwhile in various ways; I'll never play 4 again, it's the one that's like 98% of the reason people complain about the MGS series being convoluted with too many, too long, cut-scenes, and the gameplay is pretty generic. Competently done, fun enough I guess, but nothing particularly special or interesting. Certainly not worth putting up with the problems with the story and cutscenes. But I imagine you'll have to find that out for yourself.)

WHen you hug a wall you can knock on the wall, while hugging, this will creata a sound and the enemy will move towards it. Use it to get around enemies. Also there is a second inventory u can pull up, like when you picked up the chaff grenade, the grenade didnt appear when u pulled up the first inventory. I think also chaff greandes disable cameras. I know you already began but the VR training in the main menu is s good way to train. it gives you a felling of traininng b4 the mission which is nice for roleplay. Have fun!

You can actually still find Meryl's codec by going to "Online Manual" in the menu (hold R1/L1) it opens a 3D render of the case which you can flip around to find her codec. After spending the past 6 months fulfilling a New Years resolution of watching as many MGS Let's Plays as possible, I have to say that this is by far the most Solid one ever. I mean holy crap... she is quick to pick up the gameplay elements, understands stealth (which most Let's Player struggle with), and actually loves the codecs so much that she tries to listen to them all. For Meryl, the back of the CD case is actually referring to the original PlayStation 1 CD jewel case of the game that players has to actually read from to get the code. This was later included in the game/instruction manuals after MGS1 started to get ported to different generation consoles/systems. It seems they have auto saved her now in the codec memory. Speaking of, this game was legendary for its real world use/interactions which Hideo Kojima was so renowned for and you will find out many more cool ones to come in this game! I highly recommend reading the manual, there's alot more Snake can do including how to take out soldiers in stealth and stealth diversionary tactics which will help you greatly apricate just how good and advanced this game was for its time.

The code is easily obtainable within the game. Just equip the disk that President Baker gives you after he says it's on the back of the case. Or you can call the colonel a few times and the codec gets automatically added to your list. NGL, it is SO SATISFYING to see you struggle in this game after you made a mockery of many of Rebirth's challenges, especially you struggling to figure out what they meant by "the back of the CD case." I vividly remember when I first played this in, I think, 1999 (I didn't play it when it first came out) doing basically all the same things you did. Call someone while holding the Optical Disk? Look for a CD someone in the base? This game isn't difficult in the normal sense, it just plays so differently that when you get used to it, that opening bit in the harbor will feel easy. Edit: so they just put her number on the call list in this version? In the PS1 version, by "the back of the CD case", they meant the playstation case the game came in, were you saw an image of Snake in the codec saying, "Meryl" and you could see the codec frequency. WAY too 4th wall breaking for a lot of gamers.

This right here. The top games of the era were games like Tomb Raider 2, Resident Evil 2, Final Fantasy VII, Quake 2, or Red Alert. Metal Gear Solid was utterly mind blowing, if only for the freedom to move around the most detailed 3D environments that had ever been made. But then they went ahead and included all of the 4th wall breaking, the socio-political commentary, and other Kojima craziness on top.

Yep, and with Whimsy having learnt Japanese it shouldn't be hard for her to guess why. O (maru) and X (batsu) are basically what they use in day-to-day life to denote OK and NG ("no good"). Having it the other way round would be too weird for them and switching it for the West probably wasn't a priority at that time yet.

@@lockekappa500 I get what you mean, but it feels like O can also be viewed as "zero/null/void/empty", and therefore be used for cancel, while X on the contrary stands for "something". I'm not even sure what percentage of people in the West know it's a 'cross' and not an 'ex' (as in a letter). Idk, it just feels like this connection is not as strong in the West and can differ from person to person (or country to country), while it's pretty much unanimous in Japan, but maybe it's just me.

Loving your run of MGS so far along with how you are always analytical about things trying to figure stuff out. As a big fan of the series i am thrilled that you are so getting into the codec calls, lore and story MGS is trying to convey, this game was far ahead of it's time in many ways and did things we haven't seen since.... but also it's legendary 4th wall breaks. if you type "back of the cd case metal gear" in google you can see what it looked like and just imagine how crazy it was getting stuck there back in the day.... repeatedly calling your allies and hearing them say it "back of the cd case" till it clicks and you looked at the actual game cd case to see it there in plain sight. as originally she didn't appear in your codec memory till after your first call with her truly a moment of gaming genius were the game transcended the screen. a few pointers that might come in handy (depending how far ahead you are haha) if you hold down Square + X with guns you can shoot and run, also when you are holding certain weapons or equipment and call people they will have info on weapons or items you have equipped (nastasha generally has info on all weapons in the game if i recall right and some items) Couldn't be happier to see you diving into the world of MGS keep up the amazing work.

Just use the memory function of the codec. It stores all the frequencies there. -Also pressing triangle on the vents in the ducts will let you look through the vent. -Hold X while shooting. It'll let you run and shoot at the same time. If you crouch, you'll have to stand back up first before you run.

The was a lot of fun. I think MGS is a series of games that have a lot more impact if you play them on your own instead of with a chat full of people you can rely on every time you're not a 100% certain about something and you definitely seem very resourceful and capable. I've seen other people struggle a lot more with gameplay mechanics, story and especially bossfights. It helps that you're eager to get all the info and all the dialogs. I think you're gonna have a lot of fun with this game and the next ones as well :)

I remember the demo for MGS1 was something my friends and I played for hours, multiple times. It was only the starting cutscene to the hangar infiltration but it blew our minds with how much was packed into a seemingly linear start: the ways you can screw with guards down to making footprints they follow in snow, the hidden pieces of equipment, and two ways to get in the hangar.

The entire saga and especially this game assume that you played or know the story of the 2 original MSX Metal Gear, in the first game Solid Snake is a rookie and his best friend is "Grey Fox" the best soldier of the FoxHound unit, Gray Fox is sent on a mission to "Outer Heaven" as reports came in that OH possessed a superweapon. Snake would be sent to Outter Heaven to continue with the mission and rescue Fox, the mission was commanded by "Big Boss", the most legendary soldier in history, many see them as Captain America, Snake discovers that OH has a Metal Gear and that the leader of OH is Big Boss himself, Snake destroys the Metal Gear and kills Big Boss but he says that they will meet again. In the second game Snake goes to the nation of Zanzibar Land since they wanted to control the oil production that at that time was scarce and needed, in addition to of course they had a Metal Gear, Snake would discover that the leader of Zanzibar Land was Big Boss who somehow survived in OH, Big Boss was supported by Gray Fox since Big Boss saved his life on numerous occasions, Snake and Fox fight and Snake kills Fox and later he would also defeat Big Boss for the last time, there are more details about these events but they will be revealed later in next games

Whimzy, if you're interested in some more of the previous lore they mentioned so far (like Snake being the hero against previous Metal Gear), try playing the real old Metal Gear games... naturally they had a limited gameplay but very good for the time (I think early 90's?)... From what I remember, the second one had a great story too. About this one... what great memories I have for this game, I don't even know how many times I finished the game (dozens!), but the struggle to complete with the best rank was sooooo real! And maybe you'll try that too? No alarms, no detection, zero kills (except the necessary ones), time below X hours and... zero saves? Not sure about all the requirements but boy, it was hard! Good luck for all MGS saga... I played only the first two, but definitely want to play the rest later.

I love the fact that you're taking the time to exhaust and digest all the codec conversations, and to process and theorize about what's happening in the story. MGS is one of my favorite game series, so I'm really happy and excitied to see you playing that now! 🤩 Prepare for deep lore and a LOT(!) of cutscenes 😄 And just fyi (if you don't know already): "Metal Gear Solid 1" is actually the third game in the series, because before that there was "Metal Gear 1" (1987) and "Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake" (1990). It's not necessary to play them (they are really outdated gameplay wise), it's just something to be aware off in case you wonder during your playthrough why there seem to be open story lines.

... MGS4?!? I thought that embodied most of the worst things of MGS. And the gameplay was pretty generic shooter with minor stealth elements. (Like, competently enough done, the gameplay wasn't bad by any means, but I've never gone back to it, nor will I.) I have MGS3 as not just the best, but arguably the best game of all-time: every element of it is pitch perfect: story, cut-scenes, characters, sound design, soundtrack, gameplay, boss fights, level design... it's not open-world like MGS5, it's quite a bit more linear, which works (is better) IMO but there's enough room for various approaches (including, again, the sublime boss battles - The Quiet). I see what you did with MGS5 - IMO the story is very good, just incomplete. I don't think the story is bad, it seems like some people do... I think it's good, except the game just ends like 90% of the way through. Fucking Konami. But the gameplay of MGS5? Even though I said I think the not-really-open-world of MGS3 is better, and I stand by it, MGS5's open world is just the absolute best it could be. The gameplay is infinitely fun and rewarding... the sandstorms, holy fuck that was fun the first time I encountered one! (In MGS3, not in real life.) Obviously I'm talking about The Phantom Pain, not Ground Zeroes. Although I think Ground Zeroes was really good too; a great vertical slice appetizer before TPP. I just wish it was David Hayter.
