I figure you figured it out already but a chest is like a furnace made out of planks. You were so close! Make lots of torches when you go caving and light them up so less mobs spawn at night. The laughing you heard was a witch and they are mean and throw potions that have come through my oak door into my house and poisoned me down to half a heart. Iron is found around level 11 as you dig down and also around 120 in the mountains I believe. Explore around your area and look for villages. Rooftops are a giveaway or tall stone towers with yellow glass windows. I hoe you have way lots of fun with this. Thanks for sharing!

You would be safe in the mine you started to get coal if u lit it and had a door for jus a start

The door is made of wood so if you use the axe will break faster.
