Quick rundown for folks unfamiliar with tennis or tennis games: much like a basketball player would initiate then release the ball at the optimal point of the kinetic chain when shooting… a tennis player would load (wind up like in baseball or backswing in golf) their body then uncoil their forehand, backhand, serve or any shot for that matter at an optimal time in the kinetic chain relative to the incoming ball. This translates well to holding down and releasing a face button in videogames and this mechanism has become the standard in tennis simulations since topspin 3 was released in the early 2000s.
