Love the regular uploads at the moment! This one is particularly refreshing in its authenticity and braveness. I think we're all beginners one way or the other, and the process of learning a new skill, like speaking a new language or shooting a new film format, is always tough. I love how you managed to capture the essence of it: Mistakes are an essential part of the learning process. That's maybe even the essence of life itself. So really no DISASTER here, haha! Of course, clickbaiting wholesome content is always fine with me ;D Just don't begin to think of it that way, because your results, even as a beginner, are stunning already! Keep it up!

my Graflex SLR is probably the most fun I've had shooting 4x5. it's technically a 3x4 body that shoots a cropped 4x4 image on the sheets. it's so light and easy to shoot especially with a grafmatic

Cinestill 400D in 4x5!?!?!?! OH. MY. GOD. It's finally coming. That's dope. Yo... as soon as you said, "I think it's this side," I knew you were in trouble. I don't think you loaded the film properly, which is why the dark slide got behind your sheet. But your landscape was dope. That Intrepid is so light weight. I have a Linhof 4x5 and it is heavy AF which is why I haven't shot it in like 10 months. BUT... getting my hands on some of that 400D would change all that, no doubt. Another awesome video. Thank you.

When loading the film sheet into the holder, make sure to run your finger acroos the bottom of the sheet to make sure it has slid the whole way in. Then run your fingers (I actually use my thumbs, one on each side) from the bottom corners of the film sheet up along the sides until you can feel the lip of the holders over top of the film sheet. If you don't feel the lip, the sheet is on top of the holder rather than under it. This simple check has saved more that a few sheets of film.

Keep a dark cloth over the camera all the time. When inserting holders as well. Then put holders in a bag and out of bright light. I think light can leak when you insert/remove the dark slide. But I used older equipment and holders. These precautions may help.

I bought a new in box Toyo 45G on local FB marketplace - and dove in. Love the process , and the large negatives. I bought the extra large camera backpack from F.64 and I can haul the beast around. I took have taken it out twice and had decent results so far. It is a learning curve - and slooooow. That was/is my biggest failing with it - I get in too much of a hurry when I don't need to be. I also bought a cheap carson magnifying loupe to assist with focusing - and that works well. - and wait - does this mean we are getting cinestill films in 4x5??????

Typically when you end up with the dark slide in front of the film, it's because you didn't load the film properly. The holders typically have a couple of notches that you need to get the film under as you slide it in. I find it helps to get one corner in and then the other. You can verify that it's in properly by sorta bending the film upwards once it's all in. If you feel even resistance, you should have it right. Ultimately tho, it just takes practice.

I have an early version of the Intrepid 4x5 (I was on the original kickstarter campaign). I reckon I’ve taken about 6 shots in the years that I’ve had it 😂 Such a cool piece of kit, and always a hot conversation piece when you’re out and about with it. I even developed my own black and white shots, which was fun. The whole process is really nerve-wracking though - at each stage I always felt one step removed from what was happening, and completely unsure as to whether I’d just f*cked up 😂

Damn the 400D came out amazing! I’m so bummed, I backed the cinestill campaign for 100 sheets and when they didn’t ship for over 18 months I told them I’d have to cancel my order if they didn’t have a timeline for shipping. Instead of responding they just cancelled my order and then started shipping to backers two weeks later. Kinda terrible way to do business when you’re already making your supporters wait over a year 😭 I just really wanted to shoot this film in 4x5 and now I’ll never get the chance

It's a shame you had to deal with those problems, I'm not sure that's a good camera to start on. A solid Cambo, Sinar, or Toyo would probably give you a better first experience, and let you focus on the art. You made the most of it though, keep going.

Slow down, slow WAY down.. all the habits from using hand held digital or roll film cameras are revealed in this video. This is the deception of the lightweight folder view camera, the idea/belief a view camera can be used/treated like a hand held camera which is often used to make spontaneous "decisive moment" images.. Proper and ideal images with a view camera are pre-conceived, designed and made in mind well before the camera/lens and all that process begins. Image goals first, not react on impulse first. Practice using the camera with empty film holders and all, simply viewing the ground glass and getting familiar with camera/lens/tripod set up and all related is effectively dressed rehearsal for making view camera images. Be ready to waste/burn plenty of film during the learning process. It is absolutely essential at this point in the view camera learning process to make absolute sure the camera movements are set to zero or un-intented out of focus areas on the film image will be assured. Once enough of the view camera basics are mastered, the vastly difficult task of using and knowing when to apply camera movements can begin. Get a heavier/more stable tripod with no center column and no ball head as these are sources of set up instability. Weight and stability of the tripod is an absolute essential for sharp/stable images. Get a proper dark cloth (attach with velcro), 7x loupe, spot meter and all the usual view camera items. Always use a cable release. This view camera outfit is SO light weight and unstable due to the lightweight simply tripping the shutter with a finger will move the camera resulting in blurred images. The learning how to view camera learning curve is extremely steep, it takes much practice/time and waste/burning of film to acquire the basic view camera skills.
