Great reaction. As to the shiner, this wasn’t just a black eye. It was a broken jaw for starters. And I would imagine fracture of the orbital area. Also, it had impact on his sinuses as we see him constantly holding/using a handkerchief when he’s at the meals with Apollonia’s family.

"Leave the gun. Take the cannoli." Fun Fact: Lenny Montana (Luca Brasi) was so nervous about working with Marlon Brando that in the first take of their scene together, he flubbed some lines. Director Francis Ford Coppola liked the genuine nervousness and used it in the final cut. The scenes of Luca practicing his speech were added later. Bonus Fact: The three-year-old child actor, Anthony Gounaris, responded best when his real name was used while shooting the film. That is why Michael's son's name is Anthony.

Great reaction, dude! This film is covering a time span of roughly 10 years, beginning at just after the end of WWII. So Michael's character arc is actually taking place over a much longer and more gradual timeframe than you might think. It seems that near the end, it finally dawned on you that Carlo staged the whole fight with Connie to draw Sonny out into the open. So he was directly involved with Sonny's assassination. FUN FACT: Sonny was the one who introduced his sister to Carlo, before the story begins. Sonny was actually THE driving force behind the entire movie. His speaking out of turn at the Sollozzo meeting clued Sollozzo in that Sonny liked his deal. So Sollozzo decided to get the old man out of the way and deal with Sonny directly, which was a terrible miscalculation by Sollozzo. And Sonny, being destined as his father's heir, by his own violent temperament which ultimately resulted in his own death, is what changed the course of Michael's life forever as the unexpected head of the family. I could go on but, I suspect by now that my ramblings already put you to sleep. 😉

I'm not a big reader (problems) but when I finally started getting my hands on audiobooks - I *highly* recommend the book! It is SO scene-by-scene sometimes! (and the few things cut from the book, are perfectly understandable - such as all the penis/vagina chapters (I'm not even kidding)) but it's SO good! Obv, if you don't have (problems) I guess you can just read the book normally :D Highly recommended either way!

I first saw “The Godfather” in 1972 at a movie theater when I was only 16 years old. It quickly became my favorite movie. I am now 66 and it is still my favorite movie. “The Godfather” is one of those movies that you can see over and over again and the story never gets old. I see something new about the movie with each viewing. I went to the movie theater yesterday and rewatched “The Godfather”. Even though I have seen the movie numerous times, the movie is a much more enjoyable experience on the big screen. I believe “The Godfather” and “The Godfather Part 2” are equally good. The third movie was just okay.

The baby who was baptized near the end of the movie was Sofia Coppola, Francis Ford Coppola's daughter, now a filmmaker herself. Talia Shire, who played Connie, is Francis Ford Coppola's sister. He said the rehearsal for the scene in which Connie is chased around by Carlo, consisted of his little son chasing his Aunt Talia around the set, just to get a look at how it would work on camera.

My favorite thing about Michael's character and how everyone treats him is the thing no one talks about when talking about this movie. Michael was a Marine CAPTAIN in the Pacific Theater during WWII. Unless his father pulled strings (haven't read the book, so I don't know) so he had a desk job, Michael done seen some fucked up shit during however many years he served. That was a brutal theater of war during WWII. Yet, everyone treats him like he's not a trained killer, like he's a "citizen" and not tough enough or smart enough to know what he's talking about. They all treat him like the kid brother. Goes to show you what they knew. ;) So, yeah, I'm glad you touched on it.

Fun fact: Luca Brassi, played by Lenny Montana, was actual muscle for the Columbo Familia and a part time wrestler. He never acted before and his rehearsal before seeing The Don was real. His stammering while talking to Vito was real because Brando was making faces at him during the take. His hire, and the exclusion of the word ‘mafia’ were concessions to be able to film in NYC. In several interviews with James Caan about his "getting whacked" scene, he told how he was outfitted with 105 "squibs," little explosive charges with fake blood. He said that they "hurt like hell" when they exploded, so they needed to get that scene done in one take. He wasn't going to do it twice. Can you blame him? 🙃😄

If you read the book - Luca Brasi is a *B - A - D* man. Luca is the only man Don Corleone fears, and the only man Luca fears is Don Corleone. The wedding singer is Al Martino, a recording artist from the 1960s. His character is allegedly based on Frank Sinatra. Not all wedding guests were family and friends. The guy who signaled his guy to take the camera is Barzini, the head of a different crime family.

I was lucky accompanying you on this much shorted journey. I watched the entire 3 sequels about 5-6 times and it just doesn't wear off. This is the most well made movie trilogy ever made, apart from the Lord of the Rings which really can't be compared because of the very different genres. Even Star Wars falls way behind. They don't do movies like this no more. Today it's all about CGI which doesn't automatically mean it's better. Back in the day there was a lot of handy work going into the sets and the entire productions. I am sure that many of the skills filmmaking was made of got lost in the meantime. I am glad that they did these movies back then instead as of today. No CGI magician can capture the mood old celluloid and craftsmanship of lightning brought forth. And this set of actors, again, the right people for the job at the right time. I like Al Pacino as he can play the cool guy in Godfather and on the other hand playing the overheated drug lord in Scarface. He's one of the greatest actors of all time. Such as Marlon Brando also.

Certain scenes have been edited out from what was shown when it was first released, first, the scene where Tom Higgins enters the studio, Waltz, the studio head is shown gifting a pony to one of his young actresses on a filming break, she's about fourteen, fifteen years of age. The next edited out scene has Tom Higgins arriving for supper at Waltz's home, he's just stepped inside the door and is in the foyer , he looks up to a second floor balcony where we see a girl standing at the railing, it's the same young girl that was gifted the pony earlier, but now she's wearing skimpy sleeping attire, within moments a middle aged woman appears and leads the young girl back into a bedroom chastising her saying "You know you're not supposed to be out here". The scene is obvious to the viewer, and to Higgins, Waltz is using his young starlet for his own sexual gratification and thus is a......well, we all know what he is.

The movie producer wanted Corleone to make the union trouble go away, that's why hew called Hagen back. He thought that since he was so powerful that there was nothing Corleone could do to him. He was right. Corleone couldn't do anything to him, so he did it to his horse. Woltz then got the message.

So glad you finally got to watch this Masterpiece. Part II is equally well written and acted and definitely also Masterpiece worthy. This movie will always be a 5 out of 5 Stars for me. I try not to compare a direct sequel because just The Empire Strikes Back, Aliens or Terminator 2.... none of those movies would be as great without the Originals laying the ground work for them. For the record I do enjoy the sequels better, but I acknowledge without the benefit of watching the originals those movies wouldn't hit as hard as they do.

This is my favourite book and movie. The one scene I saw in the film that I did not like as much as was in the book was when Michael suggests to kill Solazzo and the Captain. Sonny was laughing his head off and the two Caporegimes laughed. But they and Michael misread Sonny. He was sure that the reason Sonny was laughing was because he was thinking Michael could not do it. It was the opposite. Of all of them Sonny was the only one who knew Michael and what he was capable of. Sonny was a great Don. He was very capable. He fought the families to a standstill. Sonny's failing in this regard was not that he was subpar. It was because he was not brilliant. He needed someone better than great. There were only two people he could rely on and one was in hospital and he was caught in a holding pattern waiting for Michael to "crack out of his Ivy League", He was desperate and waiting and waiting and then suddenly Michael was there. "All it took was a little sock to the jaw. How about that?" He was so happy. He was happy to work with Michael. He was desperate for Michael's counsel. There is a lot of conjecture about how good Sonny was. There seems online to be a pro-Sonny and dislike Sonny contingent. I am the former.

Woltz would have done a different favor, but Don Corleone would not ask a second favor if his first was rejected. Upon hearing Tom Hagen say that, Woltz realized Don Corleone would insist on the first favor, and threw out Tom Hagen because he knew there would be no negotiation.

I’m loving your reaction. As a child of the 60s my parents wouldn’t take me to see it. Even though I had premium cable since 1993, it didn’t show up on HBO until about 5 years ago and I finally saw it. What amused me was knowing The endless references to it from The Sopranos and the infamous line heard everywhere about making him an offer he couldn’t refuse and mentions of the horses head in the bed. That women whom Michael Married was Diane Keaton, AKA Annie Hall. No spoiler, but in the history of Oscars, The Godfather won best picture and the only time a sequel won best picture was when The Godfather 2 won Best picture a couple of years later. Godfather 2 is even longer, be warned. I’m thrilled I finally saw both and watched probably 3 times each. I prefer Goodfellas which I’ve seen a million times and is in my personal top 20 favorite films of all time.

FYI, Michael didn't just have a black eye. In the book the cop broke his orbital bone and cheek, that's why the discolorization. It also caused his nose to run a lot, that's why he was constantly using a handkerchief. Later on he had a surgeon repair it, Fredo even mentions it when they're in Las Vegas.

Can’t remember exactly but I think in the book they explain that the punch damaged a nerve or something and it did not look better until Micheal permitted it to be operated by a top doctor found by his dad. For a while he refused because it reminded him of the revenge he wanted and eventually exacted (my memory may be wrong, feel free to correct my statements). Also, I think this is one the most enjoyable Godfather reactions out! You catch almost everything and really appreciate the stuff that people love about the movie. 😊

The studio executives did not want Al Pacino in the film because he was not well known at that time as an actor, but Francis Ford Coppola fought hard for Al Pacino and convinced the studio executives for him to play the part of Michael Corleone. Also during the filming the studio executives wanted to fire Francis Ford Coppola as director. (I think it was because he was going over budget and behind schedule. Something along those lines). But in the end Al Pacino was in the film and Francis Ford Coppola stayed and continued to direct 'The Godfather'. As well as 'The Godfather Part II and III'. Part II is a very good film, but my favorite is the first one. Part III was somewhat OK, but not the best one. Many people did not care for it. Also the Character Luca Brasi (apparently was a real member of the mafia), and he was very nervous delivering his lines that Francis Ford Coppola decided not to do any retakes because he saw that as very real.

Godfather 3......huge letdown...... I was so fired up to see it at the theater. Came away like I did the Phantom Menace, like "what was that"? I saw it again not long ago, still disappointing. I heard their is a re-editing Francis did and it's supposed to be better, I hope so.

I have seen it a few more times a few years later after it's release, and I liked it just a little bit more, but not by much. Do not watch the re-editing by Francis Ford Coppola the Coda version. He cut out the end from the original.

Luca didn't go to kill Tatalia. He went to collect information. Luca was the most loyal person so the idea he woukd switch sides wasn't a very smart idea. Maybe The Don thought Tatalia was stupid and wouldn't have caught on but he didn't suspect Barzini was involved. If he had he would have never tried it. He's smart.

Mate, he broke Michael's cheek and around the eye, the bone too, that's why it took time to heal. As someone who knows about fractures, trust me, that's realistic, it takes a lot of time, specially since he was basically not really taking care of it. The Godfather Part II is even better. You can skip Part III. If you already purchased the Trilogy, maybe use the third disc as a drink coaster!

It’s not a shiner. They said his jaw was broken and jaw fractures take a long time to heal if ever especially back then. Pay closer attention to the dialogue in films. Also Luca was not there to kill those men but to get information from them.

If you notice, the first generation pronounces the name with the long E at the end while the second generation drops the final E.

16:42 - back then Italian mafia has a convenient way of going to war. Fight would only be between members of the Cosanostra. Women and children could stay at home, go to school, to work and never worry about an attack, while guys would move out into the city and start hunting and gunning each other down. The expression "Going to the mattress" comes from this: fighters during a war would move into a temp apartment with no furniture, just mattresses.
