Hey, thanks for the kind words. Honestly, I felt this was a quick video to put together. I was beginning to feel unwell, so didn't really put in the time to do what I would usually do, edit wise haha. I understand the "not as much editing" thing, as more "popular" creators are usually releasing videos every day, or every other day, so the editors have strict deadlines. I'm lucky to not be constrained by such deadlines, and can spend more time in the editing stage. Thanks for the sub, appreciate you!

I too found my first flight very stressful. I was nervous because I did not want to make a mistake, but I guess that comes with the pressure to remain professional and to “know” what you’re doing (how to read charts, hold procedures, basic radio phraseology, etc) before you enter VATSIM. The beauty of it is that you get to enjoy a game AND appreciate the level of professionalism both controllers and other pilots in the VATSIM network display to keep things realistic. Keep at it my dude. I know this video’s a year ago but this is great genuine content that I can relate to. I did my first VATSIM flight last month and I do 2-3 a week so at this point it’s really just muscle memory and deciphering their words through radio. 😅
@Soleed

I also find it very useful to have a paper and pen ready to jot down long instructions from ATC. I have handwritten templates ready to be filled in whenever I schedule a flight.
@chillainous

It was more stressful since I had been watching people like AFP95, Jeff Favignano who usually fly in the US, the phrasing is a bit different, so when I got around to listening to Australia, I freaked out a bit, and all my practice felt like it was for nothing haha. I still get nervous when reading back PDC, as it breaks up the flow of those speech patterns XD As for the notepad, absolutely agree, I have had a notepad since day1, but since then, I've found ways to cut back the note taking, to take them more concisely, and time effective by also making small templates. For sure it's all muscle memory and speech patterns, and I've gotten a lot better these days. I actually just uploaded another video, which serves as a "One Year Later", it's the most recent video on the channel, if you're interested in checking it out.

Nice man, welcome to the Vatsim club! Some tips from someone who also could've used them: On takeoff, pull up to somewhere between 15-20 degrees (flight director should tell you where exactly if it's set up). That'll stop your speed going nuts. Max speed under transition alt is 250knts! Also for the love of god, get your FBW 320 working. I saw you said the aircraft wouldn't load, try removing any a320 related mods like liveries, something will be conflicting. You'll be astounded at how much better it is, and watching you in this thing, you have more than enough knowledge to get going with it. Happy flying cobba

I appreciate every bit of info I can get my hands on. I do keep forgetting about the Auto Brakes, MAX on TO, and Low on Landing, unless it's a decent amount shorter. I've been trying, and was recently told of a fix to try out, so I'll be trying that out at some stage this morning. I'm excited to see if it works. Been literally *dying* to get on to the A32NX. It used to work when I first installed it a year or so ago, so I'm literally praying this fix works out. Cheers mate!

I suggest, if you really want to try flight simming, get Microsoft GamePass, it includes MSFS2020 for only 10-15$ a month. @homasas4837
@homasas4837 Жыл бұрын
@@chillainous actually its a wrong advice for an airbus. You need to cut the power after the flare is initiated. Iddle before flare can sometimes cause a lack of power for a nice flair. What you can do though is slowly start to raise your nose at 40 or 30 ft, to give you a larger momentum to flare properly at 15 or 10 ft. Try to disconnect autpilot as soon as you can to get a feel of the aircraft. Same for departure, try to handfly a bit, its easy with the flybywire system, there is no trim. Knowing when to flare isnt a precise rule, it depends on many things, the approach, the weather, your weight and so on. The best you can do is really get a feel of the aircraft. Otherwise, congrats on your vatsim baptism. Ive probably more than 2000 hours on it, and its sometimes nervewracking. But as long as you have your charts, its always fine. Never met a mean controller, despite many and many mistakes. Never once. oh, and one last tip, wait to be fully ready for push (just have to release brakes) before calling. Could be really annoying for ATC in busy airports.

@@homasas4837 Everyone has their own ways of doing things, but obviously there is a standardised procedure for landing IRL. @@chillainous actually waiting for initating flare before putting iddle is part of the Airbus SOP. Its mandatory. But its often mistaken because the procedure in a 737 is different. And indeed, the speed and the rate you are coming towards the rwy is always different no there is no definite reference. The best advice that often simpilot forgot is LOOK OUTSIDE. And it might help to have a nice default cockpit view and to always reset it before landing, so your visual references are always the same

I would recommend searching the current AIP and reading GEN 3.4 5.4 onwards as it describes read back requirements, as some of your radio calls were cluttered and contained unnecessary read backs. For example, once you have established contact with Melbourne Centre, e.g “ML CN Jetstar 768 with you FL310”, you now do not need to preface every transmission with ‘ML CN’, you can simply read back as required, ending your transmissions with ‘Jetstar 768’. Good job overall for your first time, have fun! - Airline Pilot

for sure, will look in to, will give me something to do while I'm still feeling unwell. I'll try to keep all of the info in mind, but I tend to slip up when feeling anxious. What works for me is writing down the things I know he is going to say, such as departure frequency, SID and its transition, my expected cruising altitude and any other relevant information that I almost 100% know is not going to get amended. For the squawk code, I just enter it into the squawk box as soon as they say it and refer to that. Makes it almost impossible to mess up the readback.

How did you get the marshaller at your gate? I did my first flight but on approach, my auto pilot decided to do some weird stuff, and then my game froze for like 10 seconds, when it unfroze, my plane nose dived while on autopilot, it's happened 3 times in the flight prior on descent but I managed to recover, but I didn't expect it to go that bad to where i literally crashed. I got so annoyed, I disconnected. It's so nerve wrecking, I get overwhelmed with info, I fumble my callsign sometimes due to how nervous i am, at one point I even forgot to descent, I was 10,000 ft too high, and I had to be vectored in instead of the STAR i was cleared for. I wasn't familiar with the A320, and I was also in VC with a frieend who was flying with me too, but I think It was distracting due to him talking and I not able to grasp what ATC may say. So i may try again tomorrow with 737-800 as I'm more familiar with it now, and watching your video made me realize to just be calm and ask if I need further slower assistance. I tend to hear everything they say then once it's time for readback, I forget every single thing, even the most basic instruction. So it'd definitely take quite some time. Learning experience I guess, most of it from pilot error haha.
@chillainous
@chillainous Жыл бұрын
Heya! Im unsure about the marshaller, I don't run any addons except the Pushback/Aircraft. I have similar issues when coming on to approaches, a lot of the time, it's to do with the optional photogrammetry etc. and buildings loading in at the airfield. Interesting that it's going crazy with the AP. I understand the information feels like a barrage at times. I got a brand new notepad for taking notes, and even sat at busy-ish airfields in a C152 listening to the radio, attempting to follow along. Good to hear your ATC was accommodating, and helped you down to the ground. For sure, I recommend flying in aircraft you're familiar with, in case you need to make any adjustments, or even fly without really thinking too much about it. If you think you need a little extra assistance, in your remarks when filing a flight plan through vPilot (unsure about any other programs), you can add a /NEW PILOT to the end, to warn them you are a new pilot. If things aren't too busy, and you need clarification, don't be afraid to ask questions. It might seem annoying, but it shows you are willing to learn. Overall, take your time, don't stress too much, and you'll be great before you know it. Grab a pen and paper, and write down notes if you have to, even small scripts. It helped me out a bunch, and while it may not work for you, it won't hurt to try. Best of luck on your flights out there

Listen to live ATC while watching air traffic movement and have fun, everything will start coming naturally very quickly if you just keep flying. Also try not to think of ATC as someone who is “bossing” you, they’re there to help, flying is the priority you can always ask them to standby if you’re overwhelmed. Keep it up! 💪

Yeah, I sat at Chicago Midway for a few hours one day, listening to the airtraffic there, trying to take note of what was being said, and quietly reading back to myself, as practice, before flying my first flight. I know we're all trying to work together in the skies, at the same time, I don't want to break their experience too much either. Obviously, it all comes with time, and there's still a lot of things to learn, all of which I am excited to do. Perhaps one day I'll enter a 'flow state' the same way others do XD Thanks!

Welcome to Vatsim mate. When you get familiar with IFR and talking to ATC I suggest flying VFR it's very fun. And then I recommend you start ATC training its very fun.😊 but as your first flight its good, i remember my first flight ATC asked me to squawk mode C and I didn't, and after he asked me lik 5 time I just logged off😂😂

Hell yeah, I notice my regional VATSIM community hosts some VFR events occasionally, perhaps I'll jump in one day! I don't know if I will ever get in to ATC, due to the anxiousness talking with people, but my brother has seen a few times I've hung out at airfields, and showed a little interest. Perhaps I can convince him hahaha. Thanks so much, glad to see you thought the flight was decent. Hahah oh noo! yeah, Im glad I looked at some videos on KZbin prior to even applying for Vatsim, and learned what ModeC was, early on 😂

How did you learn all that info, I understand how to fly the plane, but I don’t understand what SID is or how to taxi with letters, or what all the code names are for flight plans. Is there somewhere where you can learn all this info? Anyway, great video
@chillainous
@chillainous Жыл бұрын
You're already most of the way there then! SIDs (Standard Instrument Departures) and STARs (Standard Arrival Routes) are pre-outlined guides, how to depart, or arrive at an airfield. If you're playing MSFS, and you select an IFR flight (example YSSY-YPAD), you may notice there are 2 menus on each side, a starting point and a Departures Menu. These are the SID/STAR routes, that a lot of pilots use. I've directed a few people to www.crc.id.au/xplane/charts/DAPS-2023-JUN-15/ , to look at some charts. Find an airfield (I suggested Adelaide (YPAD)), park your plane at a bay, get out the drone camera, fly around, and identify each of the runways, from a top down, this helps you visualise. As for SID and STAR help, I found a tonne of help from watching others talk about them. As for all the code names for flight plans, Simbrief can help with things like that. Thanks for letting me waffle on for a moment there. Being new to VATSIM and even within my first few weeks as a SID/STAR reader, I want everyone else to be able to enjoy following these procedures. It feels crazy good when you know you can follow them. If you want more help, I have a discord, linked in the description of this video, feel free to join and ask more questions :)

you will do great! Everyone starts somewhere, and the community is more than happy to help out, where it can. When you file your flight plan, if using vPilot, there is a REMARKS window, add in there something along the lines of /NEW PILOT or /NEW TO VATSIM. The controllers can read that, and accomodate. If you want any additional help, to some extent, there should be a link to discord, with many knowledgeable VATSIM pilots, and even ATC, who are willing to help out too!

@chillainous
@chillainous 6 ай бұрын
Heya! If you get handed off to Unicom (122.8), you just need to let people know your actions. So lets say you're doing a flight, Adelaide to Sydney, and you're @ FL370. You would let Unicom know you are Beginning your descent and your arrival fix (example RIVET3). Sydney Traffic, CALLISGN Descending FL370 for the RIVET3 arrival, Sydney. By the time you reach RIVET, if Sydney Approach is online, they will send you a "Contact Me" to your pilot client. If not, call out on Unicom that you are arriving RIVET3, your arrival runway, and a rough time you expect to land at the field. Announce when you are on your final for the runway, and once vacated runway, a final call how you plan to taxi to the gate. Of course, that COULD be paired with tools like VatSpy or Vatprism, so you know if you have to make those calls or not hahaha.

VATSIM is a completely optional addon to Microsoft Flight Sim, Xplane and Prepar3d. Honestly, you can get an idea of some of the lingo by playing with the AI ATC enabled in MSFS, but there's obviously a little nuance to it as well. There's no training perse, but there's lots of great online content, either directly addressing the "How To" side of things, or there's content from creators much better than myself. I personally recommend people such as Jeff Favignano and AirForceProud95. If you take notes, and try to predict THEIR responses to ATC, you find yourself learning by example. When you also sign up to VATSIM, you have to take a small exam, in it, is some basic "how to talk to ATC" information. That being said, nothing is more invaluable than asking questions. Asking questions might feel annoying, but it shows others you are willing to learn, and better yourself in the virtual space. You can also "observe" the ATC and live pilots once you are signed up, by sitting in a plane, engine running, tuning ATC frequencies where they are manned. Let me know if you need anything else clarifying, or have more questions yourself, I'll answer as many as I can, and if not, find someone who can help answer them 👍
