For your ringing issues, try a Jimmyclip. It is a double sided foam clip that goes over the strings behind the bridge. I had a similar issue with my Guild Surfliner and this did wonders.

Congrats on the new guitar Dunsy! The most well known authority on Jazzmasters (and Jags) is Mike Adams from Seattle. His KZbin channel is called “Puisheen”. He’s a guitar tech and his channel has amazing content on all things Jazzmasters. Everything from squeaks, rattles, bridges, shims and tremolo systems, the man’s awesome. Might be worth a browse of his channel. I don’t seem to have any of those issues with my own Jazzmaster, but that might be because I only play it clean. Anyway, happy jammin’ 👍

Yeah, it's a great instrument (other than the high pitched ringing if I went full Pantera mode!). I bought one of those buzz stop things that you get for Jazzmasters, so we'll see if that solves the issue. Love the Gin Blossoms.

That high pitched overtones will come in handy for those early Sonic Youth covers! I had a similar problem with a Bigsby, so I got myself a Jimmy Clip. The heavily metal types use them to stop the strings ringing behind the nut but the version for eight string guitars is long enough to work behind the bridge. The problems with it are that it's expensive and you still need to remember to take it to the gig. So unless you really don't like the look, you'd be just as well sticking with your foamy sausage!

I admit I’m commenting only half way through the video, so maybe you address this. But those pickups appear on the outside to be p90’s, as opposed to true Jazzmaster pickups. Between that and surely the wiring, this guitar sounds way way thicker and fuller than a Jazzmaster does. Between the design of JM pickups, and the typical 1Meg pots that come stock in a JM, JM’s are insanely bright and scooped. I’m not hearing any of that with this guitar. But whatever it is, it sounds awesome! Like a JM that’s meant to sounds more Gibson-esque. Great find Dunsy!
@DunsysGuitarWorld
@DunsysGuitarWorld 5 ай бұрын
Yeah, I definitely think that is version of a Jazzmaster is more suited for Rock players. Gibson style bridge and the P90's are great. Got a buzz stop which actually stopped the harmonic feedback too, nice!
@stewartmitchell8007
@stewartmitchell8007 5 ай бұрын
Sounds great Dunsy. They seem to use p90 style pickups rather than the jazzmaster ones which is no bad thing as it sounds more inline with the j mascis style. The bridge posts on the Wilkinson are open at the bottom as I remember. So you can thread a long bolt down and keep turning until the post holders lift out. Jazzmasters seem to have qc issues across the brand's (fender included) with low bridges. Once you've 're angled the neck your laughing. You can get a string tree for bellow the bridge to hold the harmonics back. But the neck may need angling ( use just a half shim at the front) to raise the bridge more and create a better brake angle behind the bridge to stop the ring. Hope that makes sense.
@DunsysGuitarWorld
@DunsysGuitarWorld 5 ай бұрын
Nice one, Sir - yeah, it doesn't make any sense that you would need to remove the post inserts from the body to take off the pickguard. Crazy. I'll drop them a line and see what they say. Got one of the "buzz stop" thingys for the back of the trem to increase the break angle, so will give that a wee go and see how I get on.
@stewartmitchell8007
@stewartmitchell8007 5 ай бұрын
Try a sharper neck angle first Dunsy. I think it should help. It's not so much about shimming up but increasing the angle. They are actually really bad choices for rock music in many ways but they where cheap. I do love them though. Listen to the riff on tad 's jinx and it's pure jazzmaster thump. There's a reason I mascis records his rhythm with a gold tops and telecasters though and keeps the jazzmasters for live stuff.

Re: behind the bridge noise. The J Mascis model has its tremolo unit much closer to the bridge than a typical Jazzmaster, meaning it has a greater string break angle. There's an aftermarket piece of chrome hardware you buy called a 'buzz stop' which easily fits to the Jazzmaster tremolo unit. That may solve your issue.
@DunsysGuitarWorld

Picked up a buzz stop over the weekend - definitely hoping that that will fix the issue. I'm refined my "foam sausage" (as it were) and am currently using a smaller bit of runner padded just behind the bridge which is working perfectly.

With all the issues aside, it sounds really good! I've never seen that issue with the bridge post inserts. Usually, the pickguard would be cut to fit around the studs so you can just lift it off. That also may be a slight issue with your action as the bridge is sitting on the pickguard and not the actual body. Probably adding a few mm in height. Although I could be wrong about that. The "shim" inside the post hole is a little suspect. I'm thinking that may be causing some of the vibration you are experiencing. Also could be a bridge saddle vibrating as well. Hard to tell without seeing it in person. I would also check all the screws on the tremolo system and make sure they are tight. It's probably an easy fix, and I hope you get it sorted out. Definitely a nice guitar though and sounds great!
@DunsysGuitarWorld
@DunsysGuitarWorld 5 ай бұрын
Yeah, every other guitar I've ever had which has the holes for the post inserts on the scratchplate has been easy enough to remove the posts. I'm not sure if this one has just been badly cut. Doesn't make sense otherwise. Fitted a buzz stop this week. All will be revealed soon!

Yeah, I genuinely couldn't believe the price of this on Ebay - it was new, for sure, still had the plastic on the pickups and everything, but maybe older stock that someone had? Plays and sounds great. No issues at all with the pickups. I can't see me changing them. But, that all said, a real bugger if someone does want to do that if you have to take out the bridge post inserts. In 40 + years of guitaring I've never had to remove a bridge post insert from a guitar for any reason, never mind just to get the pickguard off. I might contact them about it. I haven't as yet, as the guitar is fantastic (other than the harmonic ringing, but I can either copyright my "Foam Sausage" (c) or I just bought a buzz kill thingy that you get for Jazzmasters. Yeah, I'm wondering if this is just a one off on this particular guitar. I can't see why any one would design a pickguard where you have to remove the bridge studs from the body. I guess I could have sent it back as soon as I noticed, but I figured that I would try and see if I could get it playing to my liking first. @@DunsysGuitarWorld yeah deffo. shimming is a great trick to know and should've been done at the factory if the QC had been done properly - just looked at pics of Fenders and the bridge is over the guard too but it just slides into the metal inserts and then the guard come off over them, I know the bridges are badly designed, hence the 'mastery' replacement but I've never worked on one - get rid I reckon and look for a squier JM

I foolishly bought a Vintage brand guitar (Strat copy) a few years ago. It was garbage, with every component made just too cheaply. The string tree, for instance, was like tinfoil.
