Been a MH nurse for almost 5 years now and I love that you’re giving advice about learning meds! As a supervisor I alwaaaaays quiz my students on meds and you’d be surprised what you hear! So definitely good advice!

@@aprilwood4589 not sure if you meant to reply to my comment but my first placement was almost 7 years ago aha! I barely remember it but it was on a male acute ward. Witnessed a traumatic incident and still carried on and I’ve been qualified almost 5 years now so I’d say it went well 😉

This has been quite helpful! I'm currently in my first year and coming towards the end of my first placement. I haven't enjoyed my first placement and wish I had some of this advice beforehand because I've felt like I'm very out of my depth with the first placement and dreading the next one which is OPMH! Going to take your advice into account for the next few years and I'm looking forward to watching your journey through YT 💖

I finished my GCSEs 2 years ago and have been confused about what I want to do. But in the past few months I just knew I wanted to do something with mental health. So i'm doing a t level in health and I hope to do this degree at the end of it. Great video

I’m at Sheffield Hallam, it’s so bad for nursing. If you are reading this, don’t go there. In the whole cohort of mental health nursing, only 4 people got placements this year

This was super helpful thank you! So when you say there’s a lot of science involved in year 1, could you go into more detail about that? I really want to apply but science is definitely not my strong suit so I’m worried I’ll struggle 😭

The science is not too difficult i’d say first year it is GCSE level biology. We learn about different human body organ systems and illnesses related to them, the exam is multiple choice x

Okay I’m back to also say yes yes yes to prepping your document before bringing it to your supervisor! And yes, nag. It can be annoying but I promise you Most of the time we forget because we have a million other things to do (that’s if you’re working on a ward) so there’s literally no harm in asking again.

So in the UK you have to go to nursing school for each specialty? In the states we learn it all and then pick which specialty.

I am starting MH nursing; my biggest fear is coming in as somebody with Bipolar and a history of formal/informal admissions. The psychiatrist supports me, but nonetheless still nervous, and my placements will be in the same places I was detained.

I really enjoy your videos. I'm hoping to go into mental health nursing and like you say, there's not really that much on youtube. How much personal care do you have to do? Also, did you have to have experience to get into uni?
@EllaSofia1
@EllaSofia1 3 жыл бұрын
Hi thank you so much! No you do not need experience but i’d say a little bit of healthcare experience will really help. There is not much personal care generally but this depends on the setting. For example, if you are working with older adults you are more likely to have to do personal care, hope this helps!

hey, looking to start a mental health nursing degree placement in September - is personal care something you're expected to do, when you're doing mental health nursing as opposed to something like adult nursing?

hey I am finishing my final year of psychology, and thinking about going into mental health nursing (MSc or BSc) when I finish. I have some reservations as honestly I'm quite shy and get really nervous and anxious/quiet around angry/aggressive/loud people and have trouble asserting myself and staying calm. What would you say about this? Also I have just been accepted as a healthcare assistant at my NHS interview a few days ago! I've previously done about 5 shifts for a care home agency and I really liked helping and caring for the patients however I was a bit awkward taking part in things like undressing/washing someone who was non verbal and had some kind of stiffness in their limbs (but other patients I was fine - mainly those who were verbal because they could communicate back to me) so I just felt unsure and out of my depth, but because I was agency I wasn't really given any training and I was so uncomfortable tbh. Also one time in that care home I went into one patients room and they were very verbally angry and aggressive, ridiculing me about doing things wrong etc and I just froze and was really shook up and afraid to go back in. The NHS told me it wouldn't be like this when I work for them, as you're given training and you're always around other HCA's who will help you. Would you say over time in an actual proper role (with training given) I would grow out of this and get used to it? I really want to help people, especially those dealing with mental health, but I'm quite timid and struggle to be really assertive. Do you have any advice or thoughts? :)
@EllaSofia1
@EllaSofia1 2 жыл бұрын
Hi, please don’t let your experience as agency staff put you off. I was in a similar position to you before starting my nursing degree! With thorough training and supportive placements it really will boost your confidence. The NHS will give you a lot of training around how to speak to and deal with potentially distressed / aggressive people. Maybe start your NHS post, see how you feel and then apply for nursing, good luck.

@@EllaSofia1 thanks so much for the reply :) - love the videos they've really helped me when looking for more insight into MH nursing! Can I just ask - Do you have any info about the BSc vs MSc route? I'll be a postgrad so with the care experience hours MSc may be an option but its only 2 years. Do you know if it's a lot more stressful since it's so condensed?

It all depends on your circumstances but if you are a student in placement working 40h a week for free whyle you still have assignments to do for uni and you also need to work part-time while taking care of your kids...yeah 😂 Good luck with that! Also most placements will not allow you to make your own shifts so you must be available 24h=no life
