I love how you go over "looks" often in these lens reviews. People seem to get overly hung up on sharpness to the point where sometimes they forget that photography is an art. Great video!
@zenography79235 жыл бұрын
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it! For what it's worth, in my opinion what photography does is present a metaphor for reality (whatever reality is!); the idea that it somehow captures what is actually out there is not entirely accurate. All photo gear gives different results, and renders the image differently, and there are conscious choices involved in every step. The idea that one image is more accurate or true than another is to miss the point. Just my opinion of course, no doubt others will differ! Thanks for watching.

@@zenography7923 With my previous gear (Sony A6000 + Sigma 30mm F1.4) I was one of those a bit more interested (not obsessed) in sharpness (landscape, cityscape, architecture - it require sharpness), however when I sold my Sony gear I bought Nikon Z50 and that sistem does not have many affordable prime lenses, so I began to watch some reviews about the vintage lenses. It is truth that they have flaws, but, everybody was talking about the special character they have (including you), so I bought: Nikon Nikkor 50mm f/1.8 AI-s and when I compared it with Nikon Z 50mm F1.8S it was obvious that the new lens wins against the old in all departments (loses only in size and weight), but the character - well that's something different. The new Z mount lens is clinically sharp, even more than enough, but it kind of lacked character. The old lens however what it lacked in sharpness has in character, that convinced me to sell the Z mount lens and not only to keep the old one (it is sharp enough!), but I bought another 2 lenses: Nikon Nikkor 28mm F2.8 Ai and NIKON SERIES E 100mm F2.8 Ai-s - three lenses for the price of one and some change for the 4-th! :)

I have the Jupiter 8 on my Kiev 4 and I have the Helios 44 and love both lenses, especially the Helios. At first I didn't find anything too special about the Helios 44. So I reversed the front element and took full advantage of the unique qualities afforded by this modification. However, after exploring the reserved element for over a year, I decided to go back to the normal position of the front element and finally discovered the subtle beauty of lhis lens.

I am having the worst luck with finding lenses that will focus when the two images line up in my rangefinder view. The RF view shows it's in focus, but the shots are out of focus. I've taken to doing a series of shots of the same subject, starting at RF view in focus and then turning the focus a bit at time to the end of the throw. I end with one more shot of RF view in focus. I am using a Leica M9 and a K&F LTM to Leica M adapter. You have lots of experience with different lenses mated up to different cameras. I have one M mount lens and it focuses correctly. I don't understand the issue. Thank you, I love your videos.

@@zenography7923 @Zenography Why the different lengths, really. Mainly because I've had a Canon 1100D for years and could use an M42 lens with a cheap adapter that added virtually no length and worked fine but recently upgraded to a Sony a6000 (in part because of your video on it :) ) and all my research led me to longer adapters. I remembered you saying the great thing about mirrorless is how close the sensor is to the lens and how much easier and compact that made using vintage lenses, so the added length was a bit confusing. I have done some more research since my first comment, and found out about Flange Focal Distance and Infinity Focus, and that there's only a 1mm difference in FFD between a Canon EF mount and an M42 mount so that's probably why I didn't need a longer adapter before? And that the reason mirrorless makes this easier is because of the smaller FFD, meaning there's a lot more choice of lenses and no need to use an adapter with corrective elements? Also, I read that despite the added length, the focal length remains the same? Again, I'm assuming this is because the adapter actually sets the lens at the correct FFD. It seems after finding the right article things became a bit clearer, but maybe there's still something to learn :)

Thanks for your review of these lovely lenses. A little correction though: you mention that the Zuiko has a focus range of 15cm to infinity on m4/3 but this is not the case. Minimum focus distance stays always the same, no matter the size of the sensor, as the m4/3 sensor only crops the image.

Agreed, the smaller sensor crops the image, giving a magnification - which decreases the (effective) minimum focus distance. So on M43, the effective MFD of this lens becomes 15cm.

@zenography79234 жыл бұрын
The AI and AI-s lenses allow you to read the aperture setting in the viewfinder of a Nikon film camera, but the speedbooster wouldn't permit this as the all manual lens can't transmit this info to a digital camera - you'll have to look at the aperture dial on the lens.

Hi, I would request you to talk about vintage cine lenses, specially how to adapt these with modern cameras. They seem to me very tricky and these lenses are costly. Before buying, we would rather know them well. I believe, this would help many photographers.

I don't understand how the MFD can be shorter with micro 4/3 cameras. Regarding the Industar I recommend the LD ( written in cyrilic ) version ( Lantharium treatment, 55mm f2.8) , it is even better. It comes with FED cameras as yours.
@zenography79235 жыл бұрын
It's to do with the smaller sensor of the mft system. The sensor receives the central part of the image from the lens, not (as it does on full frame or 35mm film) the whole image. Therefore, for any given lens to subject distance, the mft image will always appear magnified. The actual focal length of the lens, and the minimum focus distance is of course unchanged, but the effective focal length is doubled, and effective minimum focus distance is halved. Hope that makes sense, and thanks for watching.

It's all very beautiful, creative and stylish, but old wide-angle lenses have some troubles with full-frame cameras. Corners of a picture usually become blurry, aberrated and distorted =)) They say, the root of the problem is complete flatness of the digital sensor. You see, those retro-lenses were made for using with film, which is not completely flat, but slightly uplifted in the right side and left side. Sorry for bad english, lol =)))
@zenography79235 жыл бұрын
Hi, you're right that very wide angle lenses don't work quite as well on digital as they do on film, but should be fine up to about 25mm or so. I've had no problems so far but I haven't tried any ultra wide angles. And I don't think your English is bad at all - far better than my Russian! Spasiba!

Any thoughts on the Vivitar 28mm f2.8?
@defg00035 жыл бұрын
I have a Vivitar badged 28/2.8 mf'd by Komine in Nikon F mount. My understanding is that Vivitar had 2 or 3 manufacturers making this lens & that quality did vary depending on which lens maker made the lens. The Komine - my understanding - is supposed to be the most desirable. All in all, a decent lens.

I got a guy offering to trade me a Zuiko 24mm 2.0, which I can find much information on, for a lens I really never even use. He's actually offering that lens plus a Yashica 50mm 1.4 ML and Yashica 35mm 2.8. 3 lenses for my one lens. Any opinions. I would most likely put an EF adaptor on it and use it on a MFT BMPCC4k with or with out speed booster. I have seen a couple of 24mm 2.0 on eBay for 300-400 dollars.

Why are all these lenses so heavy? Are they made of osmium or something? My current set up is only 2.2 pounds. Gonna need a stronger tripod:(
@zenography79235 жыл бұрын
The weight comes from the fact that they're made entirely of metal, unlike many of today's lenses that feature a lot of plastic. I do wonder how long some modern glass will last, the kit lens on my Panasonic GH2 being a case in point - a nice lens, but feels very fragile...
