Thank you for this great Walmart information. I am 82 and don't drive anymore so use Walmart delivery now that it is available in our area. This will be a great help when I place my orders. I like to place a large order at a time as we are rural and it takes nearly an hour to deliver an order and return to the store. I always tip an hour's wages. I haven't looked up Walmart store locations but the nearest one to me is a 20min drive to Torrance and paying $5.19 gallon/gas would not make since unless I was driving by with other appointments and everywhere else I shop for groceries is 5 to 10 min away and that's in traffic here in Los Angeles county at the beach. This includes Costco, Ralphs, Vons, Gelsons, Whole Foods, lots of independent Organic & healthy food stores & let's not forger Trader Joes! My home is surrounded by 3 Trader Joes, one I could walk to and 2 others 5 to 10 minutes away. Driving beyond that lots and lots all over southern CA 😊
@KathyrawhideАй бұрын
Walmart & some instacart apps, spark do delivery. You can get shipping for free no perishable. Often this is cheaper way to go. When driving pickup may be easier its free. Most people pickup when they pick up meds, dr appointments, hair appts, school carpool, business meeting, my sister even stops by in the grain truck from her corporate farm. My mother in law pulls up the RV to go to the lake, and stocks it with perishable staples throughout the season. They don't care. We find Kroger sales closer and easy to get to too. So we choose by looking at the price on their app and deciding if kroger is a deal it usually is most weeks.
@joyfullythrivingАй бұрын
I'm glad you have so many grocery shopping options close! Yes, time and gas are definitely a factor in shopping. And besides, I can only imagine the traffic you have to deal with there too!

I will openly admit that Walmart is not my favorite store either BUT yes, there are some good deals to be found! My favorite way to shop Walmart is actually to place an online pickup order. Their app is very easy to use and allows me to take advantage of some of their lower priced products without having to go in store! 😊

Thanksgiving dinner under $20.00? At Wal-mart. Cheaper than dollar tree
@janedowasjanedowАй бұрын
If you plan ahead, you don't limit yourself. Turkeys go on sale during the year. That's the main experience. The rest depends on how many people and what you want to cook. Avoid cans and boxes. Make it yourself. Basically, if you cook, you will have the food you need. That twenty would be a nice addition for whatever extra and (or) fresh you want. The problem with all of the "challenges" being so popular, people don't cook. Those who do, generally have at least basic foods to work with.
@joyfullythrivingАй бұрын
You could definitely get some good deals at Walmart right now during this time of year, and yes, for cheaper than Dollar Tree! The "more expensive" grocery stores also have really great sales this time of year which will definitely keep your Thanksgiving meal costs down too!

Not knocking the coverage for anyone that needs/wants to do this route, but many of these items are loaded up with sodium, fat and sugar content. It's important to look at the cost of that in terms of health. It's definitely easier than prepping your own, but there's the possibility of controlling your ingredients and possibly the financial and health costs with some DIY.

Could you work up a week $1 meal plan? Might be fun. How low can go? Tuna noodle casserole Can chili and corn bread Soup w home made bread Home made tortillas w bean quesadillas Spaghetti - tomato sauce w seasoning Burrito bowls Tuna Mac Oatmeal/yogurt breakfast Stockpile sides - I buy 12 mash potatoes, can corn, green beans, stuffing, pasta, rice. Now I only buy meat, dairy and produce fresh. Really keeps weekly budget low when meat on sale. Ok So cheese would cost extra - maybe add a little flex money. How many meals can you get for $50?

@ I tend to stock my pantry by meals (minus meat - bought on sale / in freezer). It’s amazing how much it stretches the grocery dollar. I plan 20 meals a month. If this is what people still buy, we are in trouble. The main issue is that people still don't know how to cook. If you're really short on money, never buy those spice mixes. Buy individual, make your own. If you look closely, cheap tomato sause is nothing but water and tomato paste. I think it's possible to mix it yourself. Pie and cake mixes. What you really buy is flour with lots of chemicals. A bag of actual poratoes are cheaper than the strange powder. Angel hair pasta will give you more for your money than cups of whatever. A pound of pasta and a block of cheese on sale is cheaper than a box of mac and cheese. A pound of chicken on sale especially is cheaper than a can. Pouches with whatever flavored fish is very little fish and lots of chemicals. This country is in trouble.
@joyfullythrivingАй бұрын
I agree that cooking from scratch is often the most economical option. I do a lot of cooking from scratch myself BUT sometimes these filler items are still handy to have in a pinch.
@janedowasjanedowАй бұрын
@@joyfullythrivingthe rest of the world cooks. About 4 generations in the US forgot how to do it. It's simple math. Items are about a dollar. That's true, but they add up very quickly, so money goes nowhere. Spice mixes are very easy to make. These days, you don't even have to buy books for that. A box of Mac and cheese containers very little pasta and something that the company calls "cheese". You still have to boil that handful of pasta, so there is no winning here. Kids are not born wanting things like Mac and cheese from a box. We as parents introduce it to them, so we teach them to like it.

Not everyone eats this way, I make everything from scratch and I avoid canned foods. I grow what I can and preserve it myself for the year. Think about what you eat. Make a list. Calculate how many you need for a week. As a start. Multiply by the number of weeks you want to buy for. Check prices every week. You will get better prices on sale if you pay attention in other stores. Walmart is not cheap. Check clearance every time you go somewhere.
@joyfullythrivingАй бұрын
It depends on you and where you live, as well as what you eat. But for me? The canned veggies at $0.50 a can are definitely stock up price, as well as the creamed and condensed soups. Pasta under $1 a box is a great stock-up price as well. These are all shelf stable items that will last several years, at low prices, and these are the items I would start with adding to my stockpile at Walmart - or elsewhere if you find prices that match or beat it.

Ok the new rules 2024+ every store has now set 2 brands as their store brands. Setting the governments reading of the lowest brand as the gauge in cost foods. Theve done this before in the 80s, & 60, Because size, quality and value matter to choice. Your lowest brand for walmart is great value. Their second tier is called better brands, they are rolling these our with higher grade ingredients. Look for both. As great value changes types of veg, fruit, grains etc. You need to really notice this as they change their formulas, types of seeds producing food goes either the same, lower quality, or rises up abd then the original can ingredient type changes. For example corn they will decide different varieties if they are cheaper to make in bulk, certain seed has gone up in the fields, different grains, veg types etc. You will see the 2nd tier filter in the next 2 years. To keep consumers happy you will have choice. The original or mow the original ud a lower quality product?? Target, walmart, Costco, kroger, etc vendors own these stores. Every item is a vendor not the "kroger" so the only brands will be these 2 for house brands thst they make. Costco is a nit behind as they are considering bringing in more competitive vendors vs. Choosing at the fields their makers mark..so we will see if they dual up choice.

Interesting. I have not heard or seen any of this in my stores so it will be interesting to see how or if this happens - and affects shopping. 🤔
