Hey, Vladimir. I always watch your videos, especially the ones on language learning. Simply put: incredible. Your ability to express yourself in so many languages is inspiring. I know you can speak Portuguese, and since I'm Brazilian, here goes some Portuguese: parabéns pelo teu excelente trabalho. Romes

Now I am excited reading The Godfather, and I agree that only the first part of the film is good. Pretty funny when you said 'I spend quite a long period of time with my books' I assumed something totally different then 3 weeks :D

+Philipp Hörtnagl :)) Depends on the book. Hope you like reading the Godfather, but you have to completely forget the movie, especially the voice and appearance of Marlon Brando and all the gangster stuff going on.

I thought you were to show the books' covers. )-: At least we've read the same book, The Solitude of Prime Numbers. I read it in Portuguese, though. It's one of my favorite novels, even though it's too sad for me. Great video!

As you read do you need to translate every unfamiliar word or you try to guess the meaning or just skip a part of them?
@VladimirSkultetyOfficial
@VladimirSkultetyOfficial 8 жыл бұрын
+Kon It depends. At the beginning, I translate every word to get the feel for the language and know which words don't need to be translated. Like some adjectives or nouns. Later I only translate words that I can't move on without. And then when I can move on with no problems, I go back to translating almost every word and the cycle repeats itself.
@kon6768

+Vladimir Skultety Does it mean that you read one (the same) part of the text twice (or more), first time without translating every word and then you go back and translate all of the words (I'm faraid I can get you wrong).
@VladimirSkultetyOfficial
@VladimirSkultetyOfficial 8 жыл бұрын
Kon No, I just change my approach as I proceed through the book. Sometimes I read the same book twice, as it already has all the words I need translated.

The book (The Godfather) is really good, but the movie is a masterpiece. Give it another chance =)

+Lucas Wagner Lourenco I've seen it twice:) Maybe acting and directing is a masterpiece, but it completely lost the intelligence of the book. The movie is about gangsters, the book is about life.

Frederik Rasmussen Thank you:) I've seen number three too. Even Mario Puzo himself said in an interview that he was against the killing of Fredo for instance, because that along other things was not in line with what he intended the book to be.

Seeing your book with all the marks in it, looking up everything in the dictionary makes me wonder why you didn't embrace modern technology to speed up this process somewhat? Especially for Chinese there are really great popup dictionaries in browsers. Or you could load a book into Pleco on an iPad with a single touch to look up a word and also hear it spoken. Would speed up your method somewhat although I get the impression speed in learning a language is never your goal. I watched your polyglot conference video and see that you really spent several years mastering each language and are a perfectionist.

+loot6 Hello. The main reason why I make notes and make marks like this is so that I can review everything every 5-10 pages. I also like to learn from my own writing, because it is messy and not uniform, making the information much easier to remember, then if it was written in 'sterile' Times New Roman or whatever computer font. I try to learn as fast as possible actually. The language which took me years to learn was Chinese and the reason is, because it really is very difficult. Russian, French, Italian, German etc. really seem like dialects of each other compared to it.
@loot6
@loot6 8 жыл бұрын
+Vladimir Skultety Yes I know exactly what you mean since I speak Chinese at an advanced level. I've lived in China for about four years now. Strangely its the only language I know besides English! But right now I'm learning French which does seem amazingly easy in comparison with all the similar words. Even Japanese has so many similar words to English since strangely almost all objects use English words... Good point about the fonts which is why is also an advantage with computers. Although most people wouldn't think to keep switching fonts so would still be stuck seeing the same font over and over again. I'm actually developing an iPhone app for learning Chinese right now it randomly switches fonts. Its amazing how difficult to recognise even the most simple characters can be in a different font!
