I don’t agree on AirBnB. The risk is that more countries and cities will treat it like the city of Barcelona has. It has been accused of contributing to housing shortages and increasing living costs, and therefore been completely banned. The ban is expected to take effect in 2028 or 2029. There is however an ongoing debate regarding the legality of the ban. An industry group has filed a complaint with the European comission. I also know that the city of Toronto is experincing similar things and has tried to implement regulations. I wanted to invest in AirBnB but after doing my ”due diligence” I couldnt bring myself to buy their stock because of this issue 😅

Good points. To push back, I will say the company's customer value proposition is so compelling, the only way for competitors to fight back is to try and get politicians to help them.

It isn't just competitors, Parkev. Where I live the politicians are making things difficult for Airbnb lately under pressure from constituents complaining about loud parties at Airbnb properties. I had a property I own listed on Airbnb for about a year, and noticed that about half the bookings were groups, even though the property manager I hired claimed they actively worked to avoid problem bookings. They weren't horrible bookings, but when I passed by the property a couple times during that bookings I could hear the loud talking and see large groups through the window. One of the immediate neighbors also complained to me about the noise issues when I spoke to him. Because of that, I never tried Airbnb for it again after converting it to a regular rental property during the pandemic.

In the modern world with technology change, there is no stock you can hold forever. Look at the top 10 companies in the S&P 30 years ago and the ones now. Basically, you want to buy monopolies if you want great returns. Ask yourself which companies can maintain a monopoly position. In the modern era, companies with network effects become big but you need high switching cost too if they are to stay big. Switching cost means once someone uses the product, they are stuck and find it difficult to switch to a competitor. NVIDIA with just their GPU could be a Cisco or Intel. That’s why NVIDIA has to constantly add new applications and go into different areas and sectors to stay on top. Apple and Microsoft are different. Facebook is almost a monopoly. Uber is not. Easy to not use Uber and use Lyft but most people are stuck with Facebook. I know this sounds boring and intellectual. But that’s how you think about the issue and make money.
@dvb170115 күн бұрын
It's true that there are none that are completely safe to own forever. However, this is a hypothetical exercise around being forced to choose stocks and hold them for that long. To your point, though, I do think we always need to be prepared to sell even the stocks we thought we would always own, if circumstances merit such a move.
