Hey guys and welcome back to my channel for a different sort of KZbin video from me as I wanted to raise awareness of a procedure that helps French Bulldogs that have breathing difficulties. I documented Hugo's experience of the surgery as well as the recovery. He wasn't a severe case of BOAS and had the procedure done at 10 months old. The surgery was advised by our vets as he was showing early symptoms of BOAS which would affect him later in his life. We have saw a huge difference in him since having the surgery and soo pleased that we did this for him. He also recovered from it within 48 hours and his stitches on his nose came out completely around the 8 week mark. Thank you for uploading this! We had this procedure done last monday to our english bulldog & was looking on yourtube for some stories about the recovery! Pablo also breathes much better but it clearly hurts his throat. He also regurgitated his food (not all) for like 2 days. It worried me like crazy. He is still recovering but he plays and is himself 90% (5th day after surgery today). We did the surgery on emergency tough at a bulldog specialist as my Pablo started to not breathe ok anymore one morning (he is 1 and a half now) and gag and vomit foam. So it's better that you did it early before it got too late!

It’s mad how much of a difference it makes and yes totally agree so glad we got this done earlier for him. My little man, Stanley (pug) gets his surgery on Thursday this week. So worried about it but you’ve helped ease some of that. Stanley has a very small nose and snores a lot but doesn’t find it hard to exercise and is very energetic so I’m assuming he isn’t a severe case as he doesn’t struggle with breathing. @@KatiePeake thank you, it was supposed to be Thursday coming but we had to cancel it today as he developed an eye ulcer 🥲 and the anaesthetic for BOAS can reduce the healing time for other conditions. Thanks for the reply and the well wishes though. Hopefully we get the surgery booked again soon 😊😊

Hi, I know this is an old video but I was wondering if you could advise me on what pet insurance you had for Hugo that covered the surgery? I have just rehomed a one year old frenchie with very bad snorting with every breath bless her! And I think she will need the surgery. The previous owners failed to tell me this before me buying her 🙄 they have just left her like it for a year x

Hiya Charlotte, thanks for your comment! So we are with animal friends but please get the max cover you can. Hugo’s breathing is all fine now but he had to have emergency spine surgery in May and was diagnosed with IVDD (which 90% of frenchies get) and our insurance only covered £2K and he’s having another issue with neck now. Oh no as if they have left her like that :(. I’ll do an updated video soon as frenchies have so many problems it’s such a shame :( xx

Hi my frenchie Luna had her BOAS yesterday and I picked her up today and she’s so groggy! Her breathing isn’t great and she’s done a few little sicks. But the vet said she’s okay she’s gonna be like this. I’m stressing about her not eating she’s a fussy sod. I feel terrible for her, how long did Hugo take until he was more himself after having the surgery

Hi how is Hugo now? We had BOAS surgery for our little boy in December 2019.. The difference was incredible for around 6 months but then the tissue started to grow back.. The vets have recommended to has his terbinates lazered for late surgery. We can't decide what's best to risk putting him under again as their is a risk of the terbinates regrowing again..

Hiya he is doing really well! Oh did it?! Hugo had a good bit taken off his as my vet told me that he wanted to take off that bit extra just in case. I have never heard of this terbinates option I really hope Hugo’s doesn’t grow back. Is your boys symptoms quite bad again? I wouldn’t want to risk them going back under to it’s such a lot for them!

Hi there, so my Reggie is a french bulldog and we’ve just been through the process of boas surgery. Everything has gone so well but his recovery has been difficult. So basically he was being sick every time we give him food, he went back into the vets and they kept him in for two nights and we’ve picked him up today and still he is being sick after he eats his food. Do you have any idea why this is happening? And thanks for doing this video brilliant

Hiya there Tommy! Oh no I am sorry to hear that he is sicking up his food still I hope he’s okay. What food is he having kibble? I don’t unfortunately Hugo wasn’t being sick after I just kept him on wet food and his mouth was sore. No problem at all so glad you found it helpful

Your Reggie will be absolutely fine and no problem at all it’s helped Hugo loads. Hugo’s currently recovering from IVDD he had to have emergency spine surgery scariest thing ever. He’s recovering well it’s mad how many problem frenchies have!

Hiya lovely yes we use E Straiton Vets which is in Penkridge, Staffordshire. They do a lot of these surgeries and are very experienced. The best vets in the Midlands by far! Aww no bless hope he’s okay xxxx

Hi, Great to see Hugo doing so well! I have also had my dog done. May I ask how long after surgery you noticed optimal results? It's been almost 3 weeks and she had to be put on steroids to avoid inflammation. I have noticed that even though the hacksaw-sounding noise with her breathing has improved, her breathing capacity hasn't, and she still pants easily on walks, although the hacksaw noise has calmed. Can you describe what results you had the weeks following surgery and where he's at now regarding breathing noise and capacity? It would give viewers a better idea of what to expect. Aww have you and yes he has been doing great! I would say around a month after? It’s been over a year now and Hugo is so much better now. Aww no really I hope she gets better soon. Yeah the hacksaw noise sounds like the palette moving around before Hugo used to be the same. It does take a lot for Hugo to pant on walks now and he only pants if it’s warm or very sunny which is standard for bulldogs in the summer anyway. A year later and it’s made a huge difference for Hugo. Hope that helps :)

We have a gorgeous wee Frenchie too his name is Billy-Boy and all the symptoms with vomiting, bringing up foam, snoring, struggling with breathing and not being able to go long walks are the same. After listening to we are seriously considering getting him this operation. We can’t believe the likenesses between them both they are like brothers. My Lando (frenchie) sounds a lot like pre-surgery Hugo… it’s such a shame that the breeds are like this, when we got ours he was so full of life and spunk, atm he is very low energy and drooling when exercising, we’re looking at this option and seems like a portion of owners are very much against this treatment… why is this?

Hi, thanks for the video.. my Ronnie is going in wednesday for his surgery. He has recently been castrated but like Hugo doesn't like the collar! How long did you have to watch him for without a collar on? I'm worried he will rub against the sofas etc with his nose and pull stitches out etc. Any help with any other ideas would be amazing! We was going to try the e z soft collars but feel they will just rub on his nose anyway?

Do insurers class BOAS as a pre existing medical condition as they are born with it? I have an English bulldog who is very active and can run around a lot but would consider surgery just to make his breathing better, I have no insurance currently. Any advice would be greatly appreciated

Hi this video was a great comfort to us as our 8 month old Frenchie is getting this surgery very soon. It wasn’t so much breathing problems it was the constant vomiting/regurgitating that was such a concern. We got offered omeprazole by the vets which he is on now but he has severe diarrhea from it and seems to be making the throwing up worse? We are going to check in with the vets about it soon and see what they say. So glad Hugo is doing much better now!

Thanks for the video, very reassuring. My coco looks identical to Hugo, with exactly the same symptoms, she's 1 year and a month old, I've been advised to get her done whilst getting spayed in around 2 months time remaining since her first season. I have been concerned about the cost though and if insurance covers it. Can you change insurance knowing your dog will need boas surgery? How is Hugo doing now?

It’s the only food he will eat he’s so bloody fussy Liz they do puppy food to which we gave him and he loved it. I changed Hugo’s food to from what the breeder had him on xxxx

@@KatiePeake that’s awesome, Rockys breeder has him on Purina yuck! I’m currently giving him Natural Balance and I’m mixing the kibbles with organic sweet potato and carrots. I was thinking on switching him to Raw. However I see a lot of people feeding their frenchie more kibbles! Yes Hugo is a sweetie pie! I can’t wait until my Rocky gets thats big 🥰

@@neidaanderson3946 ahh no yucky! Ahh yeah that’s good and yes Lily’s dog food has lots of natural/organic veg in it and it gives him a nice variety because he’s such a picky eater! I considered switching Hugo to raw but I just don’t think I could deal with the raw meat and our freezer isn’t big enough and cuz he’s so fussy sometimes I would want him to leave it in his bowl all day and then I would have to throw it away. Aww thank you they grow so quick! Xxxx

Kseniia Sukhneva hey lovely! Aww the best Frenchie name right? He was a little bit but not worse as I think it was quite swollen on the inside so he sounded like snotty if that makes sense. I had Hugo done in May during Covid and the vet who did the procedure wanted to see a week after the op and then another 2 weeks after just to check his healing was all okay and stitches in his nose healed okay too. Yes fingers crossed you do but if you have any concerns then definitely take him to be double checked 😘 xxx

@@kseniiasukhneva685 any surgery requires a follow up appointment.... regarding him snorting louder after surgery can be caused by the swelling. If it continues for more than a couple days it may be an infection. Definitely don’t go back to that vet lol

I have a question: Did he vomit the following day after surgery? And you said that before operation he used to vomit often. Did it stop completely after? Yes his vomiting has completely stopped now! Yes Hugo has a allergy to pollen and they have calmed down a lot now. He was so bad in the summer! No problem so glad you have found it helpful ❤️

Our frenchie was not given any meds prior to surgery and he ended up with aspiration pneumonia after surgery from regurgitation. He is fine now. The omeprazole was given afterwards due to the issue. I wish I wouldn't found this video before the surgery and maybe it could've gone different. Thank you for the information.
