My father is blacklisted from Eritrea and because of that he has not seen many of his family in over 20 years. Ultimately, being in power isn’t about doing what’s right or wrong, but what’s necessary to stay in power. Those who won’t sacrifice their conscience to keep power tend to lose power. The result is that most politicians are concerned primarily with what keeps them in power. When they do good things for the people, it’s because it holds a benefit for them. But if your life and their power come into conflict, they’ll gladly take your life.

Abel Wabella is right, the State of Ethiopia is wrong, but that's nothing new. In a small way it's happening in Canada too, no one has been imprisoned and tortured, but in New Brunswick, the Irving family controls all the daily newspapers, has for years and no government has been able to stop them. Sure some former Irving employees have tried to start independent newspapers, but with the Irvings controlling the province, they soon died from lack of advertisers, so only the CBC is the voice of the province since the Irvings also own stock in the CTV network through their stocks in Bell Media and their stocks in the Global TV network too. It's all common knowledge down here, and like a lot of people say, the only thing an Irving newspaper is good for is lining the bottom of the bird cage when you don't see your name in obits.

In the Philippines, where I'm from, there is fear that what had happened in Ethiopia might fully erupt. With an anti-terrorism bill at our President's desk, there is a higher chance that journalists and truth seekers can be wrongfully accused as terrorists and arrested for criticizing the government. The problem is not only in corporate media, like Rappler and ABS-CBN but also in smaller independent outlets. They face libel charges, discrimination from the President himself, and even false claims of overthrowing the government. What's worse, some of the 80 journalists killed you mentioned in this video are Filipino Abel's story is a cautionary tale and a reminder that authoritarians will do anything to keep themselves in power. I express my solidarity from my country to his and to yours as well. This struggle for freedom is all interlinked. I hope that we can overcome it together.

Not only that, but CNN was mentioned no where in this thread. Trump did not specify "CNN" is the enemy of the people, he said (in a Tweet, might I add): "The press is doing everything within their power to fight the magnificence of the phrase, MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN! As a Saudi from the province with the highest political prisoners per capita (Al Qassim), Jamal’s murder has created a trust vacuum between the government and the people that you can literally feel in people’s words. MBS’s charming halo was shut off in one sad day in Istanbul. It just tells how vulnerable dictators are, how fragile is the collective image about them in people’s imagination and really, there’s no one holding power, it’s just a massive illusion that we live in that can be changed with ideas. Why should we worship him, just because you do? These days anyone can call himself a journalist. That is easy. The question is, is he credible? And if he isn't credible, if he uses his platform to lie, cheat and mislead a complicit audience, is he not an enemy of the people he is calming to serve? I hate seeing, and knowing people suffer, whether they are my friends and family, or some person I'll probably never meet. When did compassion and empathy die in favour of selfishness? I'm feeling more and more like I'm in the minority, like I'm some kind of freak for being upset and caring for people I don't know, or people I'm not supposed to be like. It pisses me off that people can't see that skin colour means fuck all, that we're all made of the same damned stuff. We're all humans, we're all kin, so why can't we treat each other like family? This level of selfishness and pure blindness goes beyond our survival programming. This is the kind of stuff that will end us as a species if we don't wise up. We're all being played here, by ourselves, and we let it happen, because the system "works" for a certain percentage of us. And for those it doesn't work? Fuck 'em. It's not my problem, they should employ . I'm beyond being heartbroken at the state of humanity lately. I'm just angry.

It is possible to create a kind of martyr, even if you don't kill the martyr in question. Just ask Nelson Mandela. The real problem lies in the type people who crave the sort of power to risk doing that. Too many of them are simply incapable of learning such a lesson. Too many of them merely think that, with even *_more_* power & control, their rule (and therefore - at least in their minds - the 'order' necessary to maintain society) would be absolute. And - of course - it would be they who brought it about & oversaw it. But those are just the power-hungry "idealists." Even more dangerous are those who just want that power for power's sake. The kind of people who enjoy overseeing torture & killing personally, because - like the lesser serial killers of which they are the truly big fish - they get off on it. Speaking more generally, history is doomed to repeat itself for 2 main reasons. First, we simply don't properly educate ourselves about that very history. We tell lies for complex psychological (& wholly unacceptable) reasons, that invariably glorify ourselves while vilifying the "enemy." And second, humans keep producing monsters; we simply haven't gotten that out of our genetic system. I find it disturbingly ironic that the sorts of people who belong in prisons are exactly the sorts that delight in gaining enough political control of a place to put virtually everyone else in lockdown. But, such is humanity. In the past, it was often a single leader who perpetrated such horrors own his/her own citizens. But as time has gone on - and the mindless evils of bureaucracy have progressed so marvelously - we have learned how to make the 'state' itself into an incredibly efficient killer. Yay for us, I guess. Earlier today, I was watching another KZbin channel called SciShow, and they remarked how 99+% of all species that ever existed have gone extinct, & that we may very well do so, too. I believe you've made some remark in that general direction in a previous video yourself. Well & good. *_BUT_***... While I fully acknowledge that homo sapiens sapiens is not forever, there are other ways for us to continue. Evolution springs to mind. I know many think human evolution has stopped entirely (though it has done no such thing.) I also know that the one thing that truly, meaningfully sets us apart from all other creatures is this: we are aware [well, many of us are, anyway!] of the evolutionary process that has resulted in our existence. ***_And_***, we can change it. We are already doing so. Now, I'm certainly not raising this point to suggest that we "breed" ourselves to be mild-mannered & believe in freedom of the press! But the promise of this ability (as well as its potential for abuse!) is literally unlimited. Or perhaps, it's limited only by time; the time it takes to both get good at it, & to work out the ethics (ethics simply being the polite term for socialized morals, of course), and by whatever time we may have left to be as we are before we - or something - destroys us. And there is yet another road: up. Up there, in the heavens, off this Earth. A Moon colony, or some Martian humans may start over with some new tools - including tools that shape us, even down to our very makeup. I know we haven't been able to get it right so far, though for the most part we've survived, of course (often just barely.) But I do have hope. That hope is in both humans learning: to educate ourselves & our children; to not trust some guy who promises he'll 'restore glory' or somesuch; to understand that, in evolutionary terms, different is bad - different clothes, skin color, eyes, hair, speech, food, gods, tools, history, traditions, etc., etc. - but that we ***_absolutely CAN_* raise our conscious awareness above that, and behave other than how our instincts tell us; and in humans spreading out, only this time, *_really, really OUT._* As in OUTer space! If even one human colony off planet survives - with enough DNA - then humans have survived. Sorry for running my mouth! ;) Thanks. tavi.

I think it is a bit more complicated with that journalist than you put it, by the way. We are tied to Saudi Arabia more than people know, and to outright denounce them may be bad for us. What is the saying, "keep your friends close, and your enemies closer?" Not saying Trump is some Genius, but maybe do your next documentary on the petrol dollar. (That said, murder is not alright. I believe in a free and INDEPENDENT press. However, today there are way too many people who claim to be press but are really only political propagandist, and it's getting harder to identify which is which. The result of this is supposed journalists promoting more and more extremism to widen the gap between differing views instead of encouraging dialogue to find ways to work together. Today, the bigger the network a media person works with, the more likely it is they're no longer a real journalist as they're there to promote a political agenda slant on events instead of just reporting the news events in a factual manner.

"The common man cannot be kept down for long". Unfortunately that is not true. Many governments past and present have successfully kept the common man down for very long periods of time. How long did the Atlantic slaver trade last? How long did serfdom in Europe last? Some governments change due to revolutions by 'the common man' but that is actually quite rare more often than not other circumstances are the cause of change, and more than half of all revolutions instigated by 'the common' man result merely in a change of dictator sometimes for the worse.
