Loved the video. What you said about Italian Grandmas...patriarchy isn't always about who has control in the home. In a patriarchal society women are in control of the house to the extent that they cook and do the house work and have primary care over the children. This doesn't exempt women from patriarchal structures, it does the opposite. Patriarchy let's men exist in other spheres whereas it confines women to the domestic
@sorchaoconnor37502 жыл бұрын
exactly, and just because they have a degree of control over those spheres, does not mean they are recognized for that work, quite often they are simply treated as the background to the foreground of political/social/cultural activities dominated by men
@noelliebtsie2 жыл бұрын
@@sorchaoconnor3750 They don't see it. The way our societal structures are predicated on patriarchal values. Which dovetail neatly with capitalist values. Hierarchy, top-down control, competition, paternalism, posturing, domination, exploitation. My ex would go to Greece with his dad. He told me the women really call the shots "behind the scenes". Ha. Like they love having to stay in the background and not get credit for anything.

re: your convo about patriarchy in society and matriarchy in the home, it's interesting to think about considering that often in earlier human cultures, the matriarchs were holding down the fort if they weren't hunting, so of course they would be the ones calling the shots. it's a testament to the devaluing of homemakers to this day by prioritizing productivity outside the home (ie for profit). I recommend learning about the Wages for Housework movement to see what can be done in modern time.

I like this so much! In regards to the whole matriarchal patriarchal thing, I feel like there's more domestic and emotional labour given to the woman - like if the house is messy or your kids are rude it makes you s bad mother or grandma, where as men can do what they like and still hold veto power over decisions without having to organise and worry about day today ones

the moms and the grandmas call the shots at home BECAUSE we live in a patriarchy; in a patriarchal society, that is their sphere. women have been pushed away from the public sphere and into the domestic, historically. and in many ways still are. no shade to the women who prefer that sphere willingly tho, all the power to ya, i too would some day like to have a lot of people around me that i can boss around!!! completely

Contribution to the counting discourse: 1. Counting, starting with your thumb is selfish. Hear me out, the natural positioning of your hand means its facing inward. 2. You got to start with your index and go from there! It's more of a shared, social visual i.e. the counting makes sense to both the speaker and listener. Now there are clear flaws in this logic but I count starting with my index, so I stand by the initial statement.
