Today I’m sharing my full 8 year and over €10k hair loss journey, year-by-year. My name is Jesse and I have been suffering from hair loss since the age of 19, nearly lost all my hair at 25 and today I look like this at 27. If you are a male aged 18-28 years old and experiencing hair loss, this video is made especially for you and if you stick around until the end I promise you’ll get a cool bonus.
Before it all happened (2015)
This is me on my 18th birthday. Hair loss was not a concern, but it all went down from here.
When it all started (2016)
In 2016, I experienced an extreme shedding phase. Every time I ran my hand through my hair, I'd find 10 or more hairs in my hand. The shower was even worse, with around 20 hairs each time. It was absolutely terrifying.
My first attempt to stop this was using caffeine shampoo. It made my hair feel slightly thicker, but the shedding continued anyways. A bit later, the shedding stopped, and I thought there was no hair loss, so I moved on as if nothing happened.
First realization (2017)
In summer of 2017, I was playing sports outside and during the event some pictures were taken. Looking at those pictures, I looked at my own balding crown for the first time which caused me to panic. My dad is a full Norwood 7, and I wanted to avoid that. Being the smart person I am, I asked my dad for advice. He said there were no options aside from one drug that would nearly eliminate your testosterone, which sounded too scary to look into.
Feeling defeated, I tried to ignore the problem. My hair loss wasn't visible in the mirror, so I pretended it didn’t exist. Which worked, but not for long.
The Force Awakens (2020)
In 2020 I noticed the hair loss progressing more on the front hairline as well, and I even caught a glimpse of my own even more bald crown a couple times. And so the stage of wearing hats all the time had started so I could continue to just ignore it as I did before. Again, not for long.
Do or die (2021)
2021 was the turning point.
During the summer my girlfriend and I broke up. Months later I talked to her and she casually said my shaved head made me look over 40 years old. Hearing this I could do two things. I could easily take offense or I could actually keep an open mind and listen. I realized she was telling the truth and it was time to face the music.
I saw a clear choice that I needed to make, the choice was to either lose more and more hair until everything was gone and accepting I would look way older than I was (I was only 24), or to fully resist the hair loss and trying to restore it as much as I can. And I chose to fight back.
My Force Awakens (2022)
Determined with a new goal, I started looking into my options and had a few consultations with local hair transplant clinics.
The clinic I preferred wouldn’t do the procedure unless I was on finasteride for at least a year to make sure I kept the hair I still had, so I started oral finasteride on June 3rd 2022 at 1mg per day.
When starting I was very afraid of the side effects and then experienced them myself. But then a friend told me about the nocebo effect. The nocebo effect happens when you think something will work against you, and therefore it will do so (the opposite of placebo). Just knowing about this solved all my side effects and it taught me a valuable lesson about mindset and how we can easily mislead ourselves.
A dream comes true (2023)
In January 2023 I started topical minoxidil as spray but it made my hair extremely greasy so I had to stop it after a month. The alternative was the foam variant but that one is not available in my country, and getting a prescription for oral minoxidil was impossible.
But that was a small thing, because on August 30th 2023 I had my first hair transplant done locally in the Netherlands using only 1700 grafts because aside from my regular AGA, I also suffer from retrograde alopecia in a big circle around my ears.

Nearly There (2024)
Right now it’s June of 2024 and it has been less than year since my transplant so I haven’t fully recovered, but I’m still extremely happy with the progress. The best part is that is that my hair style is no longer dictated by external forces, but my own choice, and it feels empowering and amazing.
Looking ahead, I might start oral minoxidil later this year as my hair transplant clinic can prescribe it.
And you heard me talk about my ‘first transplant’ which means there will be another transplant because it may look alright at the front I’m not afraid to show my crown which is still bald. My journey of fighting hair loss continues onwards.

Thanks! It all could've been avoided had I just taken action earlier and that's the lesson I hope to convey with this video.

Might be useful in the future - though I didn't experience irritation but the topical minoxidil itself is just super greasy. Makes you feel like you need to wash your hair right after applying it.
