One of my main issues with maple is how much progression is often tied to event. If the FOMO was out of the game, and I could log in after not playing for a while and still feel like I can progress the same as everyone, it would feel soooo much better to play.

@@TeamNinjaStrike my problem is more with the events. "Log in every day to get super easy gear progress!" "Here's an item that might not even be available ever anymore!" "The super limited tera leveling is ongoing! Now you surely wanna play!" As a possible returning player, returning at an end of an event or when there is none at all just sucks, it's discouraging.

Personally what made me quit some time ago was the Island event with the survival stuff...The BIS totem being tied to it was pretty bad...especially when you needed to play like 4h, iirc, every day to get it, something that i can rarely do. I know that one can say "oh well, it's not like it's vital", but it still feels bad to lose a BIS in an even that i do not even know if it will ever come back. I mean...it's not that hard to change the reward system for such things and make it a bit more friendly.

In my older age I do appreciate that maple stepped away from party play grind areas like LHC and Second Drill Hall since it's harder to be online at the same time as friends anymore. But the nostalgia of playing with 5 other friends for hours on end in the same map rotating attacking to take breaks will always stick with me.

Maplestory had such a profound impact on my life that I still think about it constantly almost 20 years later. I've re-installed the game probably half a dozen times in the last 10 years but I can never make it more than 20 minutes in game anymore. No support for widescreen monitors still after all this time + crazy amounts of bloat and the game never recaptured the overwhelming charm it had pre-Big Bang. I still listen to my favorite Ellnia BGM often reminisce about all my old memories, which are still quite vivid.

Same wall. I'm definitely older because I started playing when I was 15. It literally released on my 15th birthday. I have watched it from release all the way into now and I don't even play it anymore. I just every now and then go back and look at the website. I'm just surprised it still kicking. I'm 33 years old now like what the hell but it's really the only 2d MMO in the market 2D platformer MMO. There have been tons of others but they didn't last as long and even really cool ones. They just didn't get as big. I used to dream one day that if maple story was ever going to shut down, i wanted to buy the game and improve it and make it my own. Heck, I still wish I could do that. All to pay to win aspects would just go away. I wanted them to revamp the quest system forever because old maple story. The quest were completely useless but now they have like all those adventure zones and stuff now before you just grinded. I still remember when we got fourth jobs and leave freight and when everybody used to farm at a guppies. I think the highest level enemy used to be like level 70 and a tiger was like the number one player forever and everyone found out tiger was hacking and stuff like that.

Xfire logged my hours, Raptr logged my hours, Steam, Nexon Launcher, Playnite, Evolve etc. The total amount, for as much as I played would be in the 10ks or 15ks In the early stages before the BB, I must have played for 10-14 hours a day. Only slowed down after 2015. Either way, this game went through a ton of stages, but with each stage, it brings in new players. The current stage it is at: Events... Do the events and side-quests. =3

I have been playing every day for almost a month now, I have a level 228 Khali, which is my highest level character ever. 2nd highest being Corsair at 205. I am playing on regular servers because that is where I have played since MapleStory's beginning. I have tried getting into reboot, but that is rough. With barely any characters with link skills things are going super slow. But I have had a lot of fun so far. The hardest boss I have done is Chaos Zakum and Hard Hilla. And a couple bosses I refuse to do are Normal Papulatus and hard Magnus, screw those bosses, they are not fun at all! My damage range without buffs is 883.000 ~ 981.000. EDIT: Make that 965.000 ~ 1.072.000 (I did a little cubing)

To me - maplestory is that game that you install like once a year and create a new toon that you bring up to level 150~ somewhere, that's usually where I quit playing or create ANOTHER new character xd It's quite fun for that time though, we have a saying for "maplestory craving" in my friend circle. P.S yes me and my friends are over 30, and still come back to this game lol

As someone who played maplestory since Pre-BB I can say, for certain, that almost everything was improved. My only gripe is the fact that maps became streamlined and there are no longer diverging paths to hidden maps and such; but that was probably the only good thing about old MS. I honestly don't miss how we still needed physical scrolls to increase our stats, or how we needed star scrolls to give us stats that could also blow up our items. We also needed specific mastery books AND skill books for our classes or else we loose out of specific skills (and those mastery books only came from, at the time, end game bosses Pink Bean, Horntail, and Zakum), and I especially don't miss how one method of leveling was afking at Lionheart castle and having someone else passively leveling you up. But, then again, I miss how events would give us special armor and weapon sets (still have my anniversary maplestory items for some reason) as well as actual fun events. Oh well.

Honest opinion from someone whose played pre-pirates on and off; I definitely feel the party orientated play being gone is healthier for the game. The game has been REALLY fun with the faster paced playstyle and the more button mashy and arcade-y feeling combat and mobbing and bossing. The old days just felt incredibly slow and everything felt really stiff, so with the newer age of Maple it feels so good and so fun to play and grind and boss in nowadays. I definitely agree Nexon makes weird decisions often, but outside of that the QoL they've been doing ontop of the cool updates like 6th job and Savior recently; I feel like Maple is in a great spot. It's also peaking in popularity after so many years which I am happy about. Also, social aspect is still around for those who miss it it's just in the form of boss struggle parties, guilds, guild discords, late game / end game boss parties and Henesys Channel 1 now mainly.

SEA player here. been playing it since 2007 when I was in primary 4, on-and-off, and now I’ve been consistently playing it so to speak since 2017. all I can say is that I have a love-hate relationship w MapleStory, that can only be described as bittersweet, but fact of the matter remains it still holds a special place in my heart, and no matter how much I’ve been cussing at it and will likely be doing so even more in the future, I’m still gonna be playing it as long as I still draw breath and the servers are still running

As much as I love maplestory I just can’t forgive the alt meta. Gone are they days of really sinking your time into and getting lost in one character. Now you have to have like 20 characters just to make the character you actually want to play viable. Idc how fast you can level alts for legion or the skills, I shouldn’t have to play as characters I don’t want to play as period. I haven’t played since before the Big Bang update but I really wanted to get back into it, so I hopped onto the forums to ask how viable it was to just ignore alts altogether and people had the audacity to say that maplestory wasn’t for me. I played maplestory before those people were born lol it’s very sad to see the things you love twist and morph into something completely different. It’s one thing to constantly grow and improve but they really just rebranded for the worse. At least I’ll always have my memories lol

I think I really enjoy how I'm not terribly rushed to progress my character(s) to enjoy maplestory. It doesn't feel like that I'm going to be punished majorly because I'm not playing the game everyday. The content that I have yet to reach doesn't feel like it'll lose relevancy after a month, so it gives me comfort to know that I'll be able to enjoy it even if my personal progression is slow. It feels like that you're making good progress even if you're just playing the game casually. It'll be slower for sure but it still feels like you're achieving something worth while. Unless you have FOMO and push yourself to do the events because events kind of help with progression a lot but i mean... i digress.

I came back to GMS in January after playing many versions of the game which should not be mentioned :') I was never a fan of anything post big-bang, but since then I realized the game just had so many little QoL improvements and other things for me to accept that modern maple is actually a ton of fun. Or at least Reboot is, I think I'd hate regular servers. Like most maplers I'm getting older, so I accepted just being a casual pleb and progressing slowly and having as much fun as I can is what should keep me playing it for a long time. The only thing I don't like is that you have to do so much clicking to do dailies and weeklies. With maple I'm used to just have both of my hands chilling on the keyboard and realistically just not putting in much effort to do stuff in the game. But gosh all the warping and quest clicking is just tedious every day. I don't even mind the dailies themselves, most of it is kinda fun. But all the warping and clicking for daily bosses is just insane. But for a casual like me the fact that I can have decent progression by playing 1-2h a day is totally fine. Maybe if we can get some macros going for certain daily activities or generally just have all of that slightly more streamlined would be godlike. But it's not a huge deal. I think the game does a good job in creating a bit of FOMO (like every game does these days) but not so much that you end up hating the game or quitting. If I feel like skipping a couple of days, that's fine. May not get the full event rewards but 90% of it is already so much value that it would be kinda stupid to be annoyed for missing out on a little bit. Plus you usually get a buffer in terms of event periods to get away with it entirely. I also like that so many people in the community have the enjoyment mindset. Even the tryhards seem to focus on enjoyment more than anything. The game is too old and - in some ways - too simple for gatekeeping or ultimate minmaxing in some ways imo. There's a place for it, sure, but it seems most players are there just for satisfaction and overall a good time which is nice to see. Lastly I think the best feature they ever added is the skill transparency. No clue when it came out, but I definitely would not be playing still if that feature didn't exist. The game is a clusterfuck without it. I wish they did even more with it though. More customization with regards to skills and transparency. Skins, hit effect sizes, just stuff like that. The colours and vibrancy is what makes the game attractive so I don't see why they wouldn't make an effort to make that even more satisfying for players. Also, why is the transparency of my pets equal to the skill transparency? What if I want to look at my cute pets but not be blinded by my skills? Weird design choice to me. Anyway, this comment is too long. I just like modern maple way more than I thought I ever would.

great review. my thoughts r, if maplestory is ur first mmorpg. it will be an amazing experience learning new things and doing new stuff. if maplestory isnt first mmorpg, the grind can become stale for some people. there is always something to improve on while trying to balance training. so like bossing, earning mesos, guild content, quests. its all state of mind if u can do those grinds for years. for me im just burnt out of mapplestory and features they keep adding or taking away just doesnt keep me around. the community can be nice but empty at times. (rip pqs) 5k+hrs sounds like a lot but for 18years, it should be way more. i wish i knew how long i played for. i will always miss this game but ive moved on to other games and mmorpgs.(if u want a cool community mmo, play ff14)

Gave a fantastic review man. I'm almost at the same place you are - played now for 17 years, a lot of on and off though. I'll never play a game again that I'll be able to have this experience with. WoW was close when I was a kid, but MS was where it all truly started for me in terms of online gaming. The game itself is in a fantastic spot - Nexon continues to decline and their choices continue to be harder to justify. Like you said though - in terms of coming home from work, hanging out with a group of people you like, and playing a chill game that you can continually try to make some progress in there's nothing like it.

I always think if maple team used half of what it puts in the sound and design department we prob all had kms servers with an a top tier programmers with experience on MMOs actually balancing and improving the game but without the bangers and the art design most likely I would quit And yeah over the years i saw so many of my friends trying out this game just because i told them i have been playing for years and for my personal experience you either hate this game 100% not for you or you are bound to it forever and will keep coming back for some reason you fail to understand

I'm curious what caused the change in opinion over the course of 2 months. Nexon hasn't solved any of the problems mentioned in one of his videos but coppersan went from "not worth playing" to "it's good but flawed"

Out of curiosity, how is Kanna currently? Is she worth playing for someone who loves the aesthetic? How is she generally regarded? Did the Kishin nerf happen on non-GMS servers as well, or is that still just them not wanting to fix their stuff?

5000 hours in a span of 18 years huh? That equals to just 11 days per year played. I have over 7000 hours in oldschool runescape starting in 2018.... I played maplestory since 2005 as well, probably around 5000 hours as well but I quit the game in 2011.

It's impossible for me to feel comfortable recommending this game to someone in 2023. All the various complex systems you have to learn while a lot of them (like link skills, legion grid, event and bosses) are time-gated. Which means you'll get to start playing the game properly after several hundred hours unless you want to struggle.

I have 10k hours in dota 2 playing since 2013. You have like almost the same time playing maplestory (at least, looking your oldest video uploaded) And I play dota 2 3 hours average and some months and I don't enter (Playing other games) so I think you have 10000+ hours average. Maybe reaching 15k hours

I really dislike the fact that its not possible to quest through 200 to 240 ish, I am really not a fan of grinding one map for multiple hours just to gain one level , at least add some story or party dungeon

I quit a few months ago and I ain't ever coming back. No hate to the game but it had to be done. And I mean it... I threw away a 17 star arcane weapon my 21 CRA and literally every equip I had on my Lv 261 Shade main. Was fun and had cool memories, but this game will never be played by me again. Nixon fucked up way to much and the game breeds such an unhealthy grindfest.

I've always loved the look of MapleStory. It's cute and flashy and just fits its style. But I've also always struggled to get into the game. I started and stopped so many times. One of my biggest hangups is the controls. There is so little remapping possible and I just can't get it to feel comfortable to play. The second is the story, or at least how it's presented. Some characters I tried had a story that I could follow and I was really having a good time... then they would suddenly stop and I had no idea what I was supposed to do. Other classes just dropped me somewhere and I was even more lost. I also agree that the systems just aren't explained well. But I'm happy to hear it's always improving and I'll probably keep coming back over and over lol
