My Full Thoughts on Doctor Who's 2023 Christmas Special

HAPPY NEW YEAR!! I'm back and it's about time. It's been a couple weeks since the release of the Church on Ruby Road but I feel it's finally time for me to give my full thoughts on the episode and on Russell T Davies' new era of the show in general! Hope you enjoy!

I just can’t ignore the fact that 14 is chilling at Donna’s house this whole time and I’m meant to believe he isn’t absolutely ITCHING to get out there and explore? I just don’t buy it at all. I feel like he’d be pulling his hair out after a few days of doing nothing. I adore DT but I wish they just let him regenerate fully into Ncuti. What Capaldi said about death as an important motif is so true… I was ready to sob like a baby at the end of The Giggle and then what actually happened just felt like a cop out.

I didn't like it at first but I like it now. It's a way of finally giving the doctor a happy ending where he doesn't have to save the world again and again. He can rest and just enjoy life. I find it quite a beautiful ending now.

the master mentions his disdain for the doctor because she technically gave him the ability to regenerate. but, as you mentioned, i think it would be more interesting for the master to actually be the timeless child. not only to continue to use the master as a narrative outlet to emphasize the abusive culture of the time lords, but to also flip the narrative on it’s head and have the master be a part of the doctor’s identity (i hope what i’m saying makes sense😅) like, the doctor having this looming knowledge that the master will always be a part of him. that he will always be capable of evil. i think it would be a good way to explore the doctor’s newfound moral ambiguity that you mentioned in the video and could be a good way to explore the doctor’s morality for new viewers (and it would also calm some of the ceaseless timeless child hate).

I actually liked this more than the other specials. It just felt fun and Doctor Who-y. I thought the Doctor in the club was a bit weird, and the Sonic computer mouse is very annoying (a little better than the sonic sunglasses, but still don’t like it). But other than that, I really liked it! Also, how dare you besmirch the other Christmas specials!

I commented something similar on another KZbinrs video but I would personally have loved to have seen the dynamic between Ncuti and Capaldi's doctor. If that never comes to pass, I think it'll be a huge missed opportunity. I'm not sure if Capaldi was overlooked because he wasn't a part of Russell T Davies original era or if it's because he wasn't considered enough of a fan favourite. For me I think it was a massive missed opportunity. I think Capaldi being very serious and set in his ways and being noticeably wary of being the smartest person in the room would completely juxtapose Ncuti as a youthful, self assured and charming successor. I think it would make for a lot of fun humour and really show how the events of new who had aged the doctor over time with a more recent incarnation than Tennant. Even if hypothetically Tennant were still in this episode (which I suppose had to be done to get the old viewers back on board), it would be interesting to see Ncuti's fun upbeat and seemingly care free doctor be a result of Tennant being shown his own reflection in Capaldi, being a tired old man, having lost two companions and having endured a world of grief in heaven sent, alongside having to finally say goodbye to river song. The doctor being shown the gravity of what he's been through and how bitter his resentment and regret has made him over time would have been far more impactful than Donna just telling him he needs a break after not having seen him in years and not understanding the extent of his loss and his rage in his current state. I get that they tried to do this with the puppet show in the giggle, but a couple minutes of playful banter about some of the doctors losses really doesn't cut it. I think too that having Donna alongside Tennant would've been a good opportunity to touch on the grief of losing river song as she is the only RTD companion to have met her and she knows where her story ends but still has no context of the doctor's relationship with her. Even a quick nod with Donna asking if the Doctor if he ever found out who she was and the doctor just sitting in brooding silence would've been better than nothing. All the time they were afforded to talk in wild blue yonder would've been a perfect time for a conversation like this to take place, whether with the real Donna or the fake one toying with the doctors emotions. Just as a side note: I think having the meta crisis be resolved so quickly and easily really took away from Donna sacrificing herself to save humanity. I really loved that they had kept her true to her character with her making that choice and keeping the continuity of her thinking she's not special despite her bravery. It had such an impact and then BAM 30 seconds later, it's no biggie because she could've just chosen to let it go this whole time. I also agree that the doctor being content with living a normal life with the Nobles/Temples is OOC. I feel like 14 getting his own TARDIS is a fail safe or potential avenue for a side series. Sorry to keep ranting but I am also upset that Bernard Cribbins didn't get a proper tribute. Seems like feeding the audience constant serotonin was more important. I hope this seeming inability to give characters an end doesn't continue through the new series.

Wondering what 14 is up to when things are going down is similar to asking where any of the Doctors were during something as huge as The Flux. Nevertheless, I see where you’re coming from and I’m just as excited about the new series.

nah- the Doctors timeline is linear. He can't show up to meet himself willy nilly without an excuse. If they do meet, their memories naturally get erased. The 14th Doctor is the first parallel Doctor in the timeline

I can understand your frustration with it, especially him having his own TARDIS. Reminds me of that cut scene from The End of Time where 10 was gonna give the Meta-Crisis Doctor a TARDIS seed to grow his own one. Guess RTD’s had this idea in his head for a while now. The whole thing with 14 basically needing rehab from all of his adventures completely falls apart when he's given his own tardis he can go on his own adventures whenever he wants and there will be a threat there which he will stop because that's who he is so it would make more sense for him to just leave with no tardis if the whole thing is him needing rehab from all of the adventures having the Tardis that is definitely not healthy if we really want to get deep about it it's like a drug addict going to rehab but still having access to drugs in rehab? It makes no sense. I do think the Timeless child is the next time war but I don't want any answers to it or anything for a very long time maybe never I'm a fan of the timeless child but only really because there is a mystery about it, talk about it sure but keep it as much of a mystery as possible. Also if Gatwa couldn't film the 60th which would be a big thing anyway in his first story, RTD could have done a multi doctor story I know RTD said he didn't like them but him or even Chibnall could have done it maybe a few doctors have to come together to basically save there future self or something like the effects from the masters forced regeneration messed something up or the Toymaker has basically took Gatwa as a "toy" that makes a few of the doctors need to come back and save their future self 9 and 12 wouldn't come back but obviously u could have Tennant back as 10 Matt Smith has said he'd come back if he's asked and obviously Jodie u could also have classic doctors show up like in Power of The Doctor so all the doctors are celebrated and not just having one series of the show be the main thing, it could just be one long episode or even three episodes with one story with the toymaker this way every era of the show can be celebrated Gatwas doctor could maybe appear right at the end as the 14th Doctor going into the 14th series instead of a rebooted season 1 with the 15th doctor, but it is what is I enjoyed the specials just would have preferred something abit different to what we got

When it comes to the "where is David Tennant" question, I think the best answer is that he just doesn't know. 9 times out 10, The Doctor doesn't go out of his way to save people, the Tardis usually just brings the Doctor to a certain time and place that is in peril and saves the day. The same thing goes for Torchwood, the reason the Doctor wasn't in Torchwood is because the Tardis doesn't take the Doctor to Wales when the episodes of Torchwood take place.

tbh the issue with there being 2 doctors being in the same place could be said at any time with any doctors. there's been a lot of stories that took place really close by to where another story took place, and sometimes at roughly the same time. the tardis has built in systems that try to prevent the doctor from interfering with their own timeline, so i imagine that's probably still the case. it was implied that 14 was still going to properly regenerate into 15, since ncuti's doctor commented on doing rehab out of order. my theory is that 15 and his tardis were taken out of the regular timeline when 14 would actually regenerate due to the toymaker.

I think that part of the unsatisfied feeling you have regarding rehab/therapy is also because it shows no understanding of what healing looks like - rehab isn't just idyllic family dinners, what is 14 actually doing to go through the mental work of healing? How is his break actually demonstrated to help him? I don't buy that fun trips with old companions and their family and backyard dinners are it. Personally, I want my fictional characters to work and be like real people so I don't really understand why the Doctor being fictional should mean the rules of real life therapy don't apply

I personally thought the storyline was a bit weak, but Ncuti elevated all of his scenes. The one thing I’m really worried about after the past 6 years of Who is his ability to go “dark”, so to say. Almost every Doctor has had those moments in their tenure, even the more light-hearted ones like 7(sidenote: 7 definitely counts, I’m sick and tired of people treating him like Batman) and 11. Even if 15’s abandoned the baggage of past Doctors, I think it’d still be there to some degree, and it could be used thematically to show him relapsing at times. All in all, it feels like most of RTD’s new episodes are on the level of the okay mid-series stuff of his first era, and I hope he steps up his game in Season 40.

To be honest I think the 'Season 1' Rebrand has been a complete flop. Seeing the new Collection Box Set trailer get more views than the one for the actual show is quite telling. i think it was a pretty good episode, considering this is russel t davies' first dw episode since departing around 2010. the choices to make it a bit more fantastical than sci-fi-y seemed a bit out of nowhere, but it was pretty good considering he is trying something new with the show! a lot of the plot seemed a bit more like a bulletin board filled with random ideas but not quite a cohesive story. again, this could be because of the timeframe given due to ncuti's schedule with barbie and sex education. ruby is giving big roseclara love child vibes but mostly rtd's version of clara. her reason for following the doctor seem kinda random but very fun-oriented. i truly don't think there will be a romance between the two of them. the transition from jodie to ncuti seemed pretty seemless. i would have liked to see the story of how the TARDIS interior changed and the sonic screwdriver, but i think thats alright. it's a bit saddening that we couldnt get anything for the actual month of november for the 60th, but at least we got our first special with ncuti!!

The only thing I like about the Bigeneration is that it was triggered by The Toymaker wanted to do Game 3 with a third Doctor. That’s literally the only part I like. Just have Fifteen pop in with his TARDIS for an extended cameo. Or have the bigeneration only last a bit so Fourteen has to finish regenerating at the end of the episode. There are so many better ways to do this

Talking about the 14th doctor makes me think about how the whole reason they nearly lost in WBY is because 14 just couldn’t help himself and his brain from puzzling things out and revealing mysteries even though he knew that’s exactly what the monsters wanted. So to then say that he’d be perfectly fine to settle down and just laze around eating food at Donna’s is insane to me. RTD literally just made the point that he is incapable of turning off his brain and turning away from the action and then expects us to believe he’ll happily settle into a life so boring that most people wouldn’t want to live it. It’s beyond unbelievable and it makes me think RTD has plans to keep using Tennant and maybe have something where 15 shows up to solve a thing and 14 is already there like heyyyyyy yeah I couldn’t stay out of the game. In An Unearthly Child we learn about the Doctor from Ian and Barabara's pov. i think your dying on a hill with the therapy/rehab point. I get what you are saying, it’s pointless from a writing perspective in your opinion to resolve the trauma from the events of series 12/flux and then have it as a plot point in the next episode, but the point people are making is that this IS him post rehab- he can cry about it and be honest with his emotions to himself and others. That’s why he isn’t depressed about it he’s just being real about it. I do agree it would be better to NOT DO THE SPLIT GENERATION bc it takes away from it a bit

My impression from this episode isn't great. Feels childish with the whole singing and dancing thing, a lot of the specials (Star Beast) left a bad taste in my mouth, feels like it's going to be 13th Doctor all over again with a different person.

I disagree with what you said about Ncuti being sidelined in The Giggle, if anything he immediately felt like he was on David Tennants level and I think its written in a way that the focus kind of shifts from 14 to 15. If anything after they beat the Toymaker it feels like 14 is the one who is sidelined. Anyway whilst I think the Christmas Special was around a 6/10 and nothing really to write home about, I genuinely didn't even think about 14 the whole time, I think its weird that people are hyperfixating on the fact that the previous incarnation still exists...like yeah its a show with time travel in it, any Doctor could show up at literally any point but no ones wondering where any other Doctor was.

The Doctor said once (in around about way) that what happens in the confines of another incarnation is that incarnations business. What it looks like to us the audience is that two parallel Doctors are now just deciding not to help each other for reasons. This would all be solved of course by either bigeneration being clarified or having not been done in the first place. A single line of dialogue is all thats needed to give closure to the 14th doctor by stating he died or regenerated off-screen and everything's saved

you don't get it. you're overthinking the sonic screwdriver. It isn't for any of those reasons that they re-designed it. Disney does NOT own Harry Potter and they think there's a huge crossover audience from disillusioned Harry Potter fans. Disney realized , moving in a more FANTASY direction, as RTD said so, that JK Rowlings might try to sue them because the sonic screwdriver looks too much like a WAND, so they changed it into a REMOTE. Simple. Follow the money, be as cynical as possible, and you'll always get to the bottom of these things. me larn english righting laters!
