I'm glad I'm not the only one recognizing how good this series has been. I also think that one of the main reasons is the amazing chemistry and energy between the two leads to Ncuti and Millie. They're able to turn even some of the shakier plots into something still enjoyable.
@The_Siggo7 ай бұрын
To me the acting is amazing between the two - I just feel like it could’ve been better if there were slightly more episodes to make their connection feel deeper. It just feels like they’re acting a bit too close for the amount of episodes we’ve had without huge reasons beyond “they both saved the adopted child together”? With Amy it was because she had an obsessive nature with the doctor because she grew up her whole life thinking about him. Maybe this is just me but I feel that with 2 doctor lite eps and them only hanging out for not long enough that I’m a bit distrustful of Millie and Ncuti’s amazing dynamic. (Also maybe it’s just as simple that they have a good dynamic and click - I just would’ve preferred a deeper friendship over time? 🤷♂️

@@The_Siggo I agree, and I've seen a lot of people share the sentiment. But I also think that the general main criticism being "it needs more episodes" is a good thing. People want to spend more time with these characters and these stories. And it's overall the opposite sentiment from the Chibnall era. I don't think anyone who watched seasons 11 to 13 were left thinking "wow, that was great, I just wish it had more episodes". So I think we're heading in a good direction.

Alright, you mad lad. Congrats on the well deserved 17k subscribers. Big fan of the new season and your ongoing commentary. Just wanted to chime in to push back on the notion that the Finetime residents are not human. In addition to watering down the social commentary, I believe that this assertion isn’t supported by the text. Namely, the featuring of “Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie Yellow Polka-Dot Bikini”. I can accept that a humanoid alien isn’t necessarily human in this Whoniverse, but I draw the line at diegetic Earth music. Granted, the blue blood suggests a layer of removal from humanity (the allegorical imagery is clear enough), but I can think of a half dozen in-universe explanations for how the color of blood could have been altered over time. Now for my crackpot theory- if the Finetime residents somehow survived their ordeal in the Wild Woods (which the text implies is laughably implausible), then I can think of only one possible outcome. Finetime was the first human settlement on the planet which came to be known as SKARO. The descendants of the Finetimers became the Kaleds and Thals, and ultimately the Daleks. Certain elements add up - the imagery of the dome city, the silhouette of the slugs, the position of the Dot as a detached eye stalk (Dalek perception is filtered through a lens). And of course, the racism. From my POV, the “great abrogation” was likely a genocidal atrocity, in which the rights and dignity of non-white people was repealed before they were completely removed from society (I find it slightly hard to believe that the complete slaughter of Homeworld would have taken place if Homeworld had non-privileged residents). Finally, the obsession with racial purity and “taming” their surroundings feels highly evocative of the Dalek worldview- the irony being that, had the residents of Finetime accepted the Doctor’s help, there would have been no Kaled-Thal war, no mutation (which undermines the entire point of supremacist dogma), and no futile extermination war against the universe. For me, the tragedy of Genesis of the Daleks is heightened by this interpretation. The fact that Finetimers even look like the Aryan stereotypes which appeared as the Thals in the first ever Dalek story (a deliberate casting choice which highlighted the absurdity of the Nazi worldview) lends credence to this view. I’ll grant that Destination Skaro may contradict the last point I made, but its semicanonical status allows me to take it with a grain of salt. Would love to hear your thoughts! Keep up the great work!

This season has kept me engaged in a way I haven't been with Doctor Who in a while. Every single episode I was on the edge of my seat, excited to see what would happen next. Even Space Babies, which was my least favourite by far, had enough tension and mystery to get me through the uncanny babies. And every episode stuck the landing. I can't rank my favorite DW seasons because that would be like choosing a favorite child, but if I had to then season 14 would definitely be near the top.

I wanna throw out there something I haven't seen much people talk about in relations to the Slug monsters too. First off, incredible episode, obviously, I was worried going into this one then it grabbed me and didn't let go, absolutely nuts how incredible it all is from every angle. This episode is doing so much and there's so many different commentaries and angles it's approaching its issues from, but I also interpreted the Slug creatures as an allegory for Climate Change. It's revealed later on in the episode that the slugs are manufactured creatures, presumably by the ai, almost seeming representative of the strain on environmental resources that our "AI Machine Learning" tech of today already has. And these slugs are a slow moving, easily preventable threat, one that with the slightest bit of collective effort and acknowledgement we would be able to circumvent. But everyone is too busy in their own social media bubbles arguing and talking about nonsense, that they literally walk directly into the mouths of these Slug creatures, kinda like how the supposed marketplace of ideas where issues like climate change are endlessly debated prevent genuine actual action being taken to avert the crisis, because we seemingly can't even collectively agree there IS a crisis.

babes wake up DWfan91 dropped a new vid (it's me, I'm babes) edit: truly such a banger of an episode. It's been such rewarding experience to also see this show get better and better at addressing the issues that intersect with race(class, gender et) and to just witness this series run overall. we all love Tennant and the man is a national treasure but his version fo the Doctor was so dismissive of things like that(ie: telling Martha to just walk around like you own the place, or hand-waving her concerns with being free to walk around in history). Later on to have 12 outright punch a bigot was sooo satisfying. Honestly I thought I was gaslighting myself the entire episode because my guards were immediately up the second the Doctor and lindy began interacting. To me it was clear as day what her behaviour indicated and yet I still kept saying, well I dont know fully what she meant by that. I hope, in addition to the other bits of commentary,, that people really really learn that racism is never always so blatant, and to listen to us when we talk about behaviour like Lindy's. The laugh that the Doctor lets out at the end sent shivers down my spine- so many times I or my family and friends have laugh in that -exact- same way confronted with the same behaviour.

I love this little video essay. I've been a fan since Chris took on the mantle (I had watched episodes before then when I was super young but that's more of a buried memory) and I agree, this is the most excited about a who series I've been in a long time. I enjoyed 12 and 13 doctor's enough but it was distraction TV, watching with one eye while i scrolled on my phone. I was interested in seeing David back for 14 and was willing to give Ncuti the benefit of the doubt for taking on the mantle. But unlike previous seasons, the ability to dig under your skin and make you excited is back 100% and it is compelling "put everything down to watch" TV. Maybe I just vibe more with RTD's storytelling (and I mean as a showrunner, not necessarily as a writer because some of my all time fav RTD episodes aren't written by him). Chibnall's run just lacked so much. Jodie was great, but she couldn't carry the bad writing (so many of the companion moments just seemed to be "what's this" "what's that"). Now we've got great chemistry and great (if not perfect) writing.

I heard a review where someone commented that they did essentially say there was freedom from the slaves that were previously there, mentioned by Ricky when he was talking history of the town. And if that's so, I wonder if once freed, they dipped into the "Wild" woods (before it was considered "wild", cause ya know, racists) whether willingly or not. If so, what he said they will do out there, makes it even worse 😬

Honestly different people pronouncing words or names differently (or even the same person doing it) really isn't a plot hole or anything like that. Do you know how many people pronounce "et cetera" as "exzetra"? Or how American and British pronunciations are different? People pronounced stuff wrong irl as well so why would that be different in a fantasy world like star wars.

I am now pretty sure the fandom got split because politics got more explicit. In RTD1, most episodes also had political commentary, but for most of them it was easier to miss or ignore, especially since we were younger back then. I am not a huge fan of making social commentary so front and center, I prefer when it is a bit quieter and lets you enjoy the episode as fun scifi first. I still enjoy this season very much
@dwfan91-7 ай бұрын
You say 'we' were younger. *You* were younger so you missed it. It's not really that explicit, you're just older now. Kids won't see the social commentary in Space Babies, or the Devil's Chord, or Boom, or 73 Yards, or Rogue or Dot and Bubble
@tenhayz18897 ай бұрын
@@dwfan91- When I said 'we', I meant us millenials/gen Z which I think are the majority of the people watching. I looked at the list of episodes and I asked myself "What episode is constructed around sociopolitical commentary and is not overly naive (perfect example of too naive would the bells of saint john Imo)?". So I am ignoring episodes that contain some commentary but where it is a minor part of the story, like the end of the world for example. The answer was, 1 or 2 story per season up to season 10 (I can expose them if you care to argue). But in season 11 and 12, it goes up to around half of the episodes, and we have 2-3 so far in season 14 (Boom, dot and bubble and maybe space babies/73 Yards). It didnt help that the commentary made during chibnall's era was badly written (Orphan 55) and awful (kerblam). Im not saying I think it is bad to have sociopolitical commentary, I just prefer the way it was handled back in RTD1. Also, I feel the episodes dont have enough time to develop the characters, their motives, personalities and so on, which worsen the issue.
@dwfan91-7 ай бұрын
@@tenhayz1889 I mean I'm looking through the list rn and I feel like there's overt political commentary in every episode of Series 1, and in at least half of the ones in Series 2, 3 and 4. I think you need to realise that things that might seem mundane now were big deals and not even slightly subtle back then (aka Aliens of London, The Long Game, the Christmas Invasion.) Even the very first episode Rose was meant to be about terrorism, as explained in the commentary track, which was a very hot button issue at the time. I think what's happened is around Series 10's release, the political climate in the US, and by extension the UK, became increasingly extremist to the point where discussions have become too toxic to have. So that's when you probably started noticing (I would imagine because you mention you're gen Z that you were 12/13 at the time) The point I would make isn't that the fandom split because politics got more explicit, but the fandom split because politics IN GENERAL became more divisive, that I'd definitely agree with
@tenhayz18897 ай бұрын
@@dwfan91- Thank you for this well thought out answer. I was 18 when Season 10 came out, and I dont live in the UK nor US, but I think your point about politics getting more divisive is valid nonetheless. I agree with The aliens of London and the long game being sociopolitical commentary, if you asked for the list, that was the 2 I was gonna cite for Season 1. I would never have guessed that Rose was about terrorism but now that you say it, I can see it. I think it does a bad job with how lighthearted the episode is overall, but that is another issue. Anyway, thanks again for your answer and I'll be thinking about it.

I feel from conversations with people I know and from watching review videos/reading review posts that two factors heavily influence how quickly you picked up on how Finetime was racist: Age and race. And I've found it interesting listening to and reading the perspectives of everyone, whether they picked up on the racism within the first few minutes, put things together during the episode, or only realised at the very end. Within my personal life it has lead to quite a few interesting conversations, and if anyone reading this comment was someone who picked up on things later, I implore you to rewatch it with the perspective you now have.

Rating the episodes is blooming hard and I struggle to pick between two so far for top spot. 1- joint entry Boom and Dot and Bubble 2 - 73 yards 3 - Church on Ruby Road 4 - Space Babies 5 - Devils Chord 6 - Rogue Looking ford to the two part finale they may yet become my favourite. Ncuti is fast becoming my second favourite NuWho Doctor sorry he hasn't quite got to Capaldi levels yet. 😊

The ending to this episode is what i feel missing form this series so far. A scene where Ncuti can express more as himself instead of The Doctor. Until now something hadn't quite been connecting. It makes me think back to the episode The End of Time and David Tennant (my GOAT) had to save Donna's Grandfather from that room where all the radiation went. The 'I could do so much more speech' was probably the most powerful i can remember. I didn't have high hopes gonig into this season. Im not someone who watches much tv so i was unfamiliar with Nucti. At first i thought the split generation was a bad idea since in those scenes after David Tennant really outshone Ncuti imo. Then in Star Beast makibf every 3 interactions about pronouns felt a bit too forced down the throat. Dint get me wrobg i fully understand thr message and it is important to understand and accept different ways people can identity (as a gay man myself) but i tilnl some angels went a bit over the top repetitive. As for space babies its reallt jist annoyed me how The Doctor kept saying space babies so much but still kept getting it wrong buy saying g just babies...which ti me is right in the fiest place? Like Ruby isnt talked about as Earth Baby... again it felt forced and made the message stand out for the wrobg reasons imo. If the episode order was changed i get that move. The Beatles episode after was so much better and the benchmark reference for this season imo.

Oh, em gee!!! I'm in the video!!! 😅 I totally agree with kylereese about having to endure those awful characters. The protagonist girl is just horrid! 😂 But I Doctor Who taught me to endure these types for a great ending or a great lesson.

This series has been absolutely cracked in the best way possible. Aye, it's great. There's things I don't like, but each of those has been my own subjective opinion. I didn't like space babies at all, not because of its plot or writing or anything. I don't like it cause it's babies, nothing more. It's just an episode not meant for me, it's meant for people who find babies cute instead of thinking they're flesh goblins. Literally every other episode has been class. Top tier. Not perfect, but if every episode is a 73 yards, it'd be too much. Doctor who's supposed to be a bit of everything. Different stuff.

I mean... I absolutly agree with you about the briliance of this series. What I don't agree with you about is series 5 🤣 To me sieries 5 is rather underwealming. Of course like in every series there are some absolute bangers like The eleventh hour, Amy's choice, Vincent and the doctor, The Pandorica opens, The big bang. Also The beast bellow is one of my personal favorites 🤣 The rest is just meh to me... I actually prefer series 6 and 7b by a lot. (My top 3 Series is sitll 8, 9 and 10 though 🤣 I wonder why 🤔)

7b was a mess, take the specials and we are left with nightmare in silver and the crimson horror LMAO
@diamant_2dot07 ай бұрын
@@apoloartemis9038 nah, 7a was a mess. Besically the only good story in there was "A town called mercy". But "The Snowmen" till "Journey to the centre of the Tardis" is a streak of pure bangers. I give you that, "The crimson Horror" and "Nightmare in silver" were meh. But from "The Name of the doctor" onwards there it's banger after banger after banger again.

dwfan1, your thoughts are excellent, but set against random trailer edits, makes the channel almost unwatchable. please do it differently.

what do you think i should do differently
@arnothill7 ай бұрын
@@dwfan91- Well, perhaps check over your script, and align the themes that you are addressing (interesting and relevant), with short snippets from this season’s eps. If you can’t find a suitable sequence - leave a wallpaper of the tardis interior, or a still from the first scene of the ep where The Doctor and Ruby are together. It would allow the viewer to settle down and calmly listen to your cool thoughts. Alternatively - you do the talking to camera bit, which I would prefer.( I couldn’t do it myself, because my internal thoughts would be about how much I looked like a D&B mantrap.)

I can't put my finger on it, but the politics in Who have been very different since series 10 I think. Maybe I need to rewatch RTD1 and Moffat, but it seems like the escapism has been traded off for moral justification. Or maybe I'm sleepy af cuz it's 2am idk, what do you guys think?
