First time fighting Fafnir, our Ninja tank was tanking it on its right leg with everyone else on its left leg. Ninja accidently clicked their self destruct and Fafnir started to target our healers because everyone was confident the Ninja can solo tank it. Healer panicked and tried to run to the other leg but ended up turning Fafnir's tail to the entire raid, he tail swiped and killed us all.

From partying in the dunes at level 10 to reaching endgame and fighting gods in Sky or jailers in Sea (for the lucky ones who finished CoP extention), this game was some kind of a ride for years. The whole community and the openworld was very active, very alive in any zone. The level 75 era on FFXI was something I was never able to feel again elsewhere in other mmos somehow, such a great mmo it was.

The reference I enjoyed the most was the nod to players bazaaring their items in Rolanberry Fields to avoid taxes.

I was telling some friends about Jeuno's importance and why it could be mentioned as "the first walk"- I also started in bastok and made my way to jeuno, slowly and VERY carefully as a dumb 12 year old. I remember the trek taking hours of being super careful and very unprepared (plus gil back then, as you mentioned wasn't easy to come by) with no sneak oils or invis powder. I also didn't notice the fragmentation skill chain either until you pointed it out. makes me want to revisit ffxi, but it's the memories that I miss I think.

Man I really regret not playing MMOs during the golden era, shit sounds amazing. I was a late comer to the genre and while I still enjoy them it feels like the things people most value i.e. the community feel, the immersion, the dangerous world are all not there anymore. Regardless it was really nice to hear your stories about FFXI and thoughts on the new raid. I'm glad XI players got the faithful recreation they wanted, it's one of the big strengths of the team that they treat other entries in the franchise with a lot of care and respect.

I love this raid. Hell, looking at how much of Sky that they modeled, I wish for it to be the exploratory content that is released in 7.2. Have the first tier nms spawned like we spawn nms in Eureka. Then, when two of the specific nms for a specific lord is killed we get a critical engagement for that lord. Finally, when all four lords are down, either another critical engagement for Kirin, or even a public dungeon where Kirin is the final boss. That would be some awesome content. Which, of course, means it isn’t going to happen, lol. But, I loved this raid so much I do it 2 to 3 times a week. It’s just fun and tickles that nostalgia itch. Plus, it was fun on one run when no one wanted to interrupt the ninja. It’s been so long since I have been blown up by one.

my husband was FFXI player but he is not playing FFXIV, i showed him the raid as much as i could and he was excited and nostalgic, calling out the locations and characters. his comment on the shadow lord was : oh, but... he's actually a good guy :~( can't wait for the next one!

Fafnir was definitely one of the NMs that taught players to /blockaid to prevent MPKs from other parties that lost the claim war back in the timed spawn days. I think I recall my LS going on his right foot, while tank was left. It truly has been years.

I just heard about game but never touched and I was really excited to see this alliance raid in FFXIV. And I was even more curious to hear thoughts from people who played FFXI, so tuned on stream while was doing it meanwhile. And ngl it was interesting to see all these details in video

Nice to hear stories of the early side of FFXI. I started late in CoP and by the time I was around level 50-60, ToAU had already come out so I never experienced the slog or felt any sort of rush to the level 75 progression of the older zones. Imo there was so much enjoyment of min-maxing the early & mid game content in FFXI that the transition to ToAU felt seamless to me as a progressing player. Hopefuily we still eventually get a Zi'tah orchestrion. That song is always the first track people bring up when they want to flex FFXI's music.

I never did HNM back then because the story about it was so toxic LOL I started during ToAU close to Wing of The Goddess, I did Dynamis, Limbus, Nyzul Isle, Assault, Sky, and Campaign stuff to unlock the special fights. FFXI has so many special memories for me.....I remember trying MMORPG but didn't like them at all but I was a FF fan and a friend pushed me to try it, which I did for PS2...I didn't like it in the first month but after getting my first random party invite and getting to the boat to get to the EXP party, it opened my eyes how everything actual interact especially how they use the slow pace to their advantage and jobs. The world felt very alive and dangerous, needed friends, people and the community. The experience hasn't being replicated to this day. I stopped playing when Abyssea came out because I didn't like the direction. I joined FF14 and stayed on it since ARR, which I do have fun with raids and ultimate but the experience/emotion never has been replicated.

Loved the alliance raid. There's only a few things I'd change purely for nostalgia sakes; i.e. Make the Goblin Replica's spawn ALOT more mobs after they're pulled, Have Spike Flail oneshot and make the DM fight harder. But balance-wise was fine as is. Maybe add Suppanomimi as a glamour drop to DM.😅 I wish they'd add more gear from XI into XIV and this is the best way to do it. IMO the Ark Angel gear was an odd choice, hoping to see Salvage sets added in the future (I know Ares is in the game already, but add the rest).

Based on your gear, I know what type of player you were in ffxi and I can see that same attitude in ff14. Love it! Also the waifu story was sweet. FFXI was such an amazing game.

FFXI was my shit. I played for 6 years. I’m so glad that FFXIV showed it some love with the alliance raid.

My only nitpick with the raid was I would have liked a newly arranged Soken soundteam version of Awakening. Like Ivalice it was all just directly from the original, which is fine, but I would have liked at some FFXIV versions of those songs. Still as a former FFXI player I loved it. The party seeing you pull Aquarius and saying "Their problem now." and running off was the most real reference.

as a ffxi vet i was satisfied by this raid. mechanically there were a lot of references to XI's gameplay. visually, it was very faithful to the original - the only thing weird was Prishe's hands in the first fight, but at least they explained it. the sound and music (since they used the original) was on point.. and most of all the lore explanation they gave for this raid was well done - it didn't cheapen FFXI in any way, which was my biggest concern going into this. im looking forward to the next 2 tiers and what they might bring. i think we have a good idea who the last boss in part 3 is.. but i want to see what other crazy fights they can recreate.
@qbee36424 күн бұрын
As a FFXI player, I agree this raid hit the mark with references and presentation. It did as good as a job as FFXIV could because FFXIV's design cannot give a proper ode to how community driven old MMOs were and how chaotic those bosses can be when some TP moves start spamming, people accidentally being in range of aoe moves or hate resets. I do hope they make the questline more expansive from here on out. I don't think it will be as grand as Nier but it could be like the Werlyt's questline where there was a proper narrative and closure. Combat wise, my concern is this raid may still not be future proof with the HP tuning like Ivalice and Mhach/Dun Scaith. Those raids to me are the ideal pace they should aim for in ARs. They seem too scared about the HP sponge of Nier that they keep over-correcting for that mistake which is part of the reason why Mists of the Realm is so bad. I talked to some of my non-FFXI friends who actually thought relying on Electrope was the cheap easy way out compared to Nier and Ivalice which actually had influence in the existing world. That probably just comes down to them not liking how we visit these open-ended concepts where anything can be created similar to how Omega made his raid series.

FFXI will always be the #1 MMO for me. GW2/FFXIV and BDO just can't match it. It's sad that to come back to FFXI you have to go thru so many hoops just to install it properly, overrun by gil sellers, and you have to install 3rd party apps to make it look modern and run lua files to make your gameplay be 1000x more efficient. FFXIV definitely wins in the MMORPG department, but content replayability wise, it's dead last.

the thing i'm kinda annoyed by is that they're basing an entire alliance raid series on something that a decent chunk simply will never get. the only reason I know Shantoto or Prishe is because of FFBE, other than that? never heard of them, so every reference goes over my head, also severely harmed the "enjoyment" of the story, since I don't know these "new" characters and I don't remotely care. I loved the Nier raid since I played Nier Automata, so I knew a decent amount of references there, but honestly, they should just be original, since a good portion doesn't know anything about FF11. (doesn't help that they refuse to make FF14 and 11 subs go together, i'm not paying 2 subs of equal pricing) the fights were good though, actually felt a bit more difficult than the EW alliance raids, which I appreciate. (although the tells from the dragon were absolute dogshit, sometimes he shows a tell that he'll blast infront of him ... nope, it's a giant circle)
