Really interesting discussion! As someone who holds both TLOU games up there as the greatest of all time, Im always open and curious to hear what others think. Speaking personally, I’ve never played a game with such good performances and writing than those games, especially part 2. It elevated the simple gameplay and simple game mechanics, and made me crave more linear and straightforward games. TLOU2 gave me Snake Eater vibes when you’re sneaking around forested areas/houses. My hot take is definitely both Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom are wildly overrated. I think they are lazy, copy/paste, mindless adventures with a dismal story. I play Zelda games for the dungeons, atmosphere, music, and story. These new Zeldas….they are just open sandboxes saying “YOU create your own adventure”. No Nintendo, I want YOU to craft it like OOT, MM, and TP.

Hi Mike! Finally someone says "The Last of Us" is an overrated game... THANK YOU! I like both games, but I completely agree with you. As a big fan of horror/ zombie/ splatter movies and games, "The Last of Us" didn't really show much that was new. The atmosphere, presentation and voice acting are absolutely brilliant...but the story isn't really anything earth-shattering. Your 8/10 is totally justified in my opinion. Maybe even 7/10. Great game but nowhere near close in the top 10 best games of all time. I would also go so far as to say that I prefer any Uncharted installment over the Last of Us games. My "Hot Topic": Bioshock isn't the masterpiece that many think it is, but I have to admit that I haven't played it in a very long time. It's fun, has a great atmosphere and a good story, but the gameplay doesn't feel as good as other shooters. Something about this game just annoys the hell out of me... Thank you for this great video, it's always nice to see that not all KZbinrs try to please the crowd! So now I'm going to watch your other video, Your Favorite Games. :) Take care

Well thank you! And I 100% agree with your take on Last of Us as well. As far as Bioshock…yeah I think it’s good, but it’s certainly over praised to a bizarre degree. Like, they’re solid, but there really wasn’t anything mind shattering about any of three games. So yeah, I definitely agree with you there. As always thanks for watching and commenting!!

My gaming hot take is that it’s more interesting to hear a different opinion on a game rather than hear your own opinion echoed back to you. Cool video, dude!

Another great video. I am one of those people that thinks The Last of Us is a masterpiece. I can agree that the gameplay itself is fairly standard. For me though the story (Even if simple on the surface) Is what really nails it for me, I was just ULTRA attached to the characters which majorly heightens the gameplay for me. The soundtrack also carries the story and makes you FEEL it. The animations at the time were also unmatched in my opinion. Part of what makes the gameplay so satisfying despite being fairly simple is the animations make you really FEEL everything you do. Just throwing it out there why I love it, but I see your points.

Great video Mike. Following your Elder Scrolls section. My takes goes with Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest franchise. If for you Skyrim is the one that is overrated and where the mainstream hop on it in my case Final Fantasy VII and Dragon Quest VIII are the ones that are too way overrated. Final Fantasy IV and VI and DQ IV and V are waaaay better than these two. Imagine if any of them were relaesed on the systems that FFVII or DQVIII were released. PEople should play more older games and not just worship the new ones.

Idk if you played Left Behind or Part II, but I think those games did a much better job of fleshing out the gameplay mechanics and it goes deeper than Ellie being able to prone. Some of the most fun with 2 is when you play as Abby, especially with one level in particular when she goes to the hospital.

I’ve played through both! Great technical achievements, still didn’t dig the world, characters or variety. The Rat King part was probably my favorite. It was fun to get a flamethrower with infinite ammo on new game plus I admit! Thanks for watching and commenting!! 🙏

For me the game I really just don't like that's very popular is xenoblade due to the combat, Xenoblade using mmo rpg style combat just isn't as fun as turn based combat to me because I feel like the game just plays itself in some cases. Also I really agree with you on the last of us. And I can vouch for what you said about zelda being a huge zelda fan as well. I wish more nintendo fans this year had tried pikmin 4 but that franchise is hopefully gonna be more popular in the future.

Seems to me that the PC modding community is most impactful reason that gave Skyrim the mind blowing sales legs it has had, to the point where a curated ‘best mods’ version was the latest release on current gen consoles?

Really great video! First off, even as a fan of Skyrim I love that you brought up how the "dragons" in Skyrim more closely resemble Wyverns instead, which is accurate. In regards to stuff I agree with, man I can't tell you how sick I am of The Last Of Us being overpraised. I'm gonna be frank, I straight up don't like the game, or it's sequel and I'm sick of Sony pushing it like an A-List franchise. I'm sick of Elie being praised as this breakthrough for female characters in games when there's been PLENTY of great female characters in gaming, from PlayStation alone: Kat from Gravity Rush is 10X better as a character than Elie and I stand by that. Just because she's realistic and angry, doesn't mean she's better. Incidentally, when a game developer straight up comes out and says "We don't use the word 'fun' when making this game" is utter nonsense. Naughty Dog is insane for that, it's the most backwards statement used to describe a game I've ever seen.

100% agree. Though I usually don’t let it bother me, modern Naughty Dog seems very haughty these days…like, it’s just a zombie game…or to be specific, a fungus monster game lol, it’s not high art, but so many people have jumped on that bandwagon… Regardless, thanks for watching and commenting! 🙏

1000% agree on TLOU. Average game, with an incredible opening... then just good after that. I reckon the critics and gamers who tout is as the GOAT have ulterior motives of trying to get non-gamers to respect the medium more. (So, they pick the game with the photo-realistic graphics, and easy to understand, cable-tv story.) I wanted to buy into the hype too, so you can imagine my surprise when I finished it and thought "7/10" Great vid, Mike

First off, love the video mike. And I'm writing this as the video goes along. 100% on the same page with elder scrolls. Love Morrowind and think Oblivion is great (i boot it up just to do the Dark Brotherhood quest line alone). While I probably sunk 200-300 hours in Skyrim when it came out(I was around 12/13 when it released), I just have no desire to come back to it and when I do, I would rather play Morrowind. The creativity and overall world and characters are so much more entertaining and interesting then the later games. I agree on that FFXII take. I love vagrant story but idk if that has to do with any of the ivalice universe or not though. I liked how that game was a more..."local story"( For vagrant story) but that's not what you should expect with an FF mainline game. Game is 7.8 out of 10 to much tan. FFXIII regardless I don't like lol, idk if I'll ever try it again...nothing to do with it being linear, I almost beat FFXVI twice already and that game is VERY LINEAR. Zelda fans need to be humbled and realize every game that drops isn't a 11/10. AND THANK YOU FOR THE LAST OF US COMMENTS MY MAN MIKE IS PREACHING.

I really appreciate how well you go into details on your stances. To many people go "its bad. The game play is bad" and leave it at that. No qualifiers or nuances to their sentiment and they just expect a resounding agreement. While I don't necessarily agree with everything you said, mostly minute sub points. I understood and appreciated your opinion which many opinion pieces don't both with. Some of the trees I'll bark up While I agree Okami does need more attention and zelda fans have gotten EXHAUSTING. However I have a hard time agreeing it's better than Twilight princess or Windwaker. ESPECIALLY since those games ports had some serious quality of life features added that Okami could use a good look at for.(Not exactly the same quality of life updates but just a good look to see where the game could be improved.) Reasons for me not being on the "Okami is better" train is sometimes the game on for to long, especially in story segments. I wasn't a fan of the arena style fights being used in ALL field encounters. While the cast was vibrant and varied I can't say I really jelled and became invested in any particular character story. AND. THOSE. WANNABE. WHOMPS. CAN. GO. TO. HELL. Last of us I agree with, though I actually really enjoy the game-play. For me it was a compelling mix that carried me through both games, as I sure as fuck would of put it down if I had to mainly be into the story for motivation. However the movie comment instantly made me think of a specific moment that I harped on to my FIANCE FOR AGES.(Much to his disdain as he really likes the story in last of us) (I will be vague so no spoilers) A story event kicks off that suppose to showcase the horror of humanity. after surviving another building of murder happy time fun. You exit into a destroyed home where there mostly only a wall left with a still mostly standing window frame in it. In the distance, bad shit going down. The developers were so proud of what should been a spontaneous moment of looking through this window frame at the perfectly framed destruction that they REFUSED to let the player miss it. So as you exit and walk by the camera SNAPS out of your control to force you to look through the window. The character your controlling doesn't even walk up to the window(or if they did the camera was to much in a rush for me to parse it) the developers literally are showing this TO THE PLAYER. FORCABLY. This killed my immersion for the rest of the segment and came as sharp contrast to another game I was playing around the same time. FFXIV just saw shadowbringers released. The first dungeon of this expansion as you trying to save a town from the new hot evil. Your group just beat the first boss of the dungeon in the forest leading to the town and are following a straight path up a hill. At the top of this hill you have a beautiful view of a meadow just outside of town being destroyed, fire all over, being trying to run away and mostly failing. This view is perfectly framed but the camera was never taken away from the player. By having that hill with a straight path. Square insured that most players would have their camera facing forward at a slight upward angle to see where they were going. They trusted their gameplay design to give the players the experience they were going for. And if those handful of players that did not have their camera the right way as they walked up, they ensured the actions that were in front of them were visibly attractive enough that when your first experiencing it. YOU WOULD LOOK. SIMPLE AS THAT. The fact Naughty Dog cared more about framing the shot then making sure the gameplay reinforced the narrative speaks volumes to how little they were concerned with telling that story through the lens of a video game.

Thank you for your thoughtful comment. As far as Okami compared to Twilight Princess and Windwaker HD, I agree that it was odd that all field encounters happen in an arena, maybe it was a technical limitation at the time, however, I still find the variety in weapons, movement, and enemies to be more than enough to counter the flaw that it's all happening in a cylinder. As far as the length of the game, and I'm going full spoiler mode here, I just didn't feel that. I enjoyed the escalation from Orochi, to the Nine tailed fox, to Yami quite a bit, since each one of those segments felt quite different in tone for me. Also the fact that there were just so many celestial brush techniques to unlock and discover kept things interesting for me. There were easy ones to miss like the infinity symbol inferno technique, that I think were just a joy to find and then utilize in combat to spice things up. Even though Wind Waker is my favorite Zelda, that variety just isn't there (probably due to the famous development cuts it suffered). From the first encounter all the way to big dad-bod Ganondorf, you essentially use the same weapon and attacks all the way throughout, and while there is beauty it that simplicity, it could be somewhat disengaging. That combined with the fact that if you miss the swift sail early on, you essentially double the length of the game...man I love Wind Waker's heart, but it can be very rough for me to go back to. And as far as Twilight Princess, now I think it's a gross over simplification to just call a game of that caliber "dull" but I really struggled through a lot of that game. While Midna is fun, that game's color palette and art design simultaneously bored me and left me disappointment after what I though was an impressive evolution of the N64 tites to Wind Waker. But I'm biased here, Twilight Princess is my least favorite Zelda by far. I don't subscribe to the fact that is was overly gritty like many do, combined with my visual complaints above, I found the gameplay hook of transformation lacking and the pacing a bit tiresome, especially since Okami was already out when Twilight Princess launched, and I had already fallen in love with Okami's marriage of gorgeous presentation and expanded gameplay. But to each their own! We're not talking about bottom feeders here, we're talking games that are considered classics by many, so where I rank them against each other in my own head doesn't change the fact that there all legends. Thanks for watching and commenting!

I will say that in regards to the TLOU franchise, at least for me, its just another zombie game which I feel like we've had too much zombie media with the likes of Walking of the Dead & Resident Evil. I do respect it, but I don't think I'll ever play it
