There are many shaded areas but the roses still grow so well. I never knew that, I thought all roses require full sun.
@smallbackyardfun Жыл бұрын
Actually, first of, I need to say all roses need to be in full sun to bloom and growing well. When I was filming, I picked early mornings or overcast days, when I could record the colours of flowers more accurate. So don’t let the shade in this video fools you, the most areas in my yard are full sun (6-10 hours) in the summer. Just only the area at the front where is close to the house is half day of sun exposure, but it still 5-6 hours ( from 12.00pm until 6.30 pm)

I thought roses have to plant in full sun before. But your garden is kind of shady and roses still in blooming. So impressive.
@smallbackyardfun2 жыл бұрын
Oh, don’t let the overcast in the video fools you. All my roses are in full sun, or at least 5 hours to expose to the direct sun. Sometimes I have to choose the overcast day or early morning…to film for accurate colours of the flowers.

More Beautiful than Heaven "" Please let me know ,what brand {kind}of soil you use for your Beautiful Roses. Thank you.
@smallbackyardfun Жыл бұрын
Thank you for your compliment! My soil is just the native soil here with some amendments such as compost, mushroom manure, chicken manure…, I usually have a top dressing with good garden top soil and some chicken pallet at the beginning of the season, after the first flush I keep going with soluble fertilizer bi-weekly until October. For the container/pot soil, I use good compost mixed with perlite, worm casting and peat moss, the mix has to be light and very well-drained, hope that helps!

you have so many roses in the pots. What soil did you use for them?
@smallbackyardfun Жыл бұрын
I mixed it by myself, 2 parts of compost/garden topsoil, 1 part perlite, 1 part peat moss, 1 cup worm casting, 1/2 cup of bone meal…, I also use Miracle moisture control potting mix and add more perlite in there sometimes, and it’s good as well

Beautiful garden and carefully selected roses.Do you feel the deference between clay pots and plastic? I see you have them both. Also how you take care of fungicides and pesticides? Thanks.
@smallbackyardfun2 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much for stopping by, honestly I prefer clay pot, better regarding its aesthetics and also my roses are doing a tiny better than plastic pot, but not really huge leap, but plastic pot has its own advantages such as light to be moving around, cheap, keep the water better in the hot season. I have no spaying garden, so basically I keep all my roses as healthy as I can, so they can fight back the diseases, avoiding water over the foliage and too late at evening, collecting all the disease leaves either on the plants or on the ground, keeping good air circulation, hope that helps!

Awesome. Everything about it I love. Great garden, great rose collection and a very well put together video! Absolutely Superb. Can you tell us when the side of your house gets direct sun, the front and the back?
@smallbackyardfun2 жыл бұрын
Thank you for stopping by, much appreciated! Regarding sunlight exposure, the side gets direct sun from 8.30am until 7pm in the summer, it is less in the spring/fall, but totally it is full sun in this area. I have two portions in the front where receive the direct sunlight differently, the first one where is nearby the hedge and the lawn is also full sun (from 7am to 8pm in the summer), the second portion where is close to the house is just half sun( it gets direct sun from 12.00 pm until 7.00 pm in the summer, and around 1.00pm until 5.30 pm in the spring/ fall). The back is just only “morning sun” area, it gets sun from 6.30 am until 2.00 pm, and gets the shade after 2.00pm in the summer, of course it is less in the spring/fall, I hope this helps!
@Jay_Jay2 жыл бұрын
@@smallbackyardfun yes I understand totally. You have great direct sun in your garden. The side I was most curious about but that’s fantastic sun. Magnificent collection and alot of hard work. thanks for sharing.

Your Eustacia Vye looks gorgeous!! I am planning to grow my first Eustacia Vye in a container/pot as well. May I ask the size of the container it is growing in? Thanks!
@smallbackyardfun Жыл бұрын
Eustacia Vye grows pretty in container. My size is 15”x22”, hope that helps!
@suziem5485 Жыл бұрын
@@smallbackyardfun thank you! Is it 15" in height? Would you recommend plastic containers for the climate in Pacific Northwest?
@smallbackyardfun Жыл бұрын
@@suziem5485 actually 15” is width, 22” is height, I have a lot of plastic containers in my garden, so far I don’t see any problem at all, as long as you keep watering enough in the summer
@roontunes2 жыл бұрын
Gorgeous, do you have Eustacia Vye in a pot, do you get any fragrance, I have no fragrance from her in two years ? If so can you tell me the size of the pot and do you totally repot it or just top up.
@smallbackyardfun2 жыл бұрын
Yes, my Eustacia Vye is in the pot and very fragrant, I plant a lot of my roses in containers, most of them are thriving, ideally 20”x20” is the best but 17” is still not bad at all, some of my roses are even in 15” container and still doing well, I change the soil after 3-4 years, depends on how I see they perform in that season, but I always exchange the top soil every year by compost mixed with perlite, humic and fertilizer in beginning of the season, also fish and seaweed liquid fertilizing program per 2-3 weeks is very important for roses in container as well
@roontunes2 жыл бұрын
thanks, that's very helpful, my E Vs are not doing too well, supposed to be 'shade tolerant' but I think they need a lot more sun, I'll try containers next year and I can then let them have more sun. In two seasons with these I've had zero fragrance ! But I loved your video.@@smallbackyardfun
