I ran the Headlands 100 as well. Great course and great people out there! Thanks for all the great reviews (I saw you at the beginning and told you so!). I used the Hoka Rincons and had the Olympus as my backup shoe. The Hoka Rincons are road shoes but have enough grip for most standard trails without the weight, plus they are a little wider than the speed goats. I love the speed goats but way to narrow for me on longer distance. I have an SLAB pack, same head phones, nutrition for me is gels, tailwind, pickle juice, turkey sandwiches on sourdough, ginger ale and coke. It was a tough tough course. I had a similar bad race in Leadville the month before. There are good days and bad days. You made 62 miles on a tough race. Use that as a training run and go knock out another in a week or two :-). You will be happy you did!

Congrats again on your race! I find videos like this very interesting. Given that you get to try a lot of gear and that there is a decent selection of good gear around what gets chosen when the chips are down is helpful. My go-to gear is the Adv Skin 12 pack (for mandatory kit) 2019 version. Seems to Salomon has come pretty close to perfecting that one over the years and it just fits me. The Leki Trailstick Pro are my poles of choice, I prefer the cycling glove like "straps" over the traditional ones on BD poles.

I think you can benefit from compression socks. I, like you, find the Hoka's a bit too narrow. But they are still my number one choice. And since your feet expand during a race, something to compress them in place will prevent both blisters and keep your feet from rubbing. Also because of the stretched fabric my experience is that it's harder for sand to cause blisters.. I use compress sport mid trails. Or something like that. Better luck next time! And 62miles is still an adventure!

I've found I've slimmed down so much gear for hundreds after my third (well sorta, Teanaway was cancelled...). @@TheGingerRunner You know, I'm not sure Injini's get enough credit. While I've always thought of them as a comfort-option/blister-preventative, I think there's an argument to be made that they can improve performance via improved foot proprioception. I've noticed that I perform better in Injini's, and I think it might be because my toes aren't "splinted" together by a tight sock. The thin fabric between the toes on Injini's forces my toes to work relatively independently, even inside of a shoe. Hmm. I might also be overthinking this...

pros: they prevent blisters in between toes, feel cooler in the summer (glove vs mitt analogy), good socks if you wear Altras or Topos. con: they have more fabric between the toes, that means the toebox has less space
