my gentle approach to the 12 week year and goal setting
Today we're talking all about my approach to the 12 week year. I talk all about what I do and don't like about the book and method, and what I'm doing differently. What exactly makes my approach gentle?

100% agree and as a neurodivergent person, it's not sustainable to think of my performance in a linear way. Dealing with PMS, Bleeding and different phased of peak productivity in a month also contribute to me performing differently in different stages of the month/ year. So for me it is essential to expect energy dips, deperesive episodes and always be ready to adjust my goals to my abilities. A lot of times my mental health and self esteem depends on me resting, and not being too hard on myself. So thank you for this video. I have saved it, as I will be doing the 12 week year in 2024 and currently reading the book. I feel I wil have to come back to your video to calm myself down, when I'm being to hard on myself

this video is absolute gold! I got halfway through the book and became a little discouraged. it's hard for me to disregard the annual mindset because my production ebbs and flows with the year. Staying on task is important but not at the expense of my mental health. they said to aim for excellence, not for perfection, but at this point, I'd rather aim for moving forward in any way. :p I'm checking out tiffanys video now, thank you for reminding me that we're human, not big box robots

You are ALWAYS enough, remember that. I have started to incorporate seasonal living and working with moon phases as a part of my intention setting. New moons are more introspective and you can write down/journal your goals/intentions. Scripting is a nice one where you write as if you are in the future and you've achieved your goal already. Full moons are about evaluating your progress towards your new moon goals and releasing behaviors/people/situations that are not serving you as you attempt to reach your intentions. It also uses a seasonal approach. For example, New year resolutions are hard to follow because it's the middle of Winter time, and we don't particularly have the energy required for big goals, leading us to fail more often. Instead, people will do their big resolutions at the beginning of Spring, where our energy is much better and we can use that higher energy level to help stick with goals and habits necessary to achieve our goals. It's very "gentle" and not at all geared towards corporate quarterly hustles. The moon phases are every few weeks, which feels like just the right amount of time to really think about what you want and what's working and what's not working and it encourages you to take the time and give yourself space for reflection. It has been very helpful for me personally. Good luck with your journey, and remember to be gentle with yourself. 🤍

Yes I totally agree 💕 each of us (including me) is enough as we are! I'm glad I was stuck in that mindset for just a short amount of time. Feeling that way really was a lesson and why I decided to prioritize the gentleness. Feeling at your best (or my best) truly makes for a more joyful life. We don't need to struggle mentally to achieve our goals. I'm glad you found something that's worked for you 💗

Thank you for this. I love this approach. You are enough. Rest is resistance and I think that using a gentle approach can work best for those who aren't hardwired in the belief that are worth is attached to our productivity.

thank you so much for this because no one talks about how corporate coded the 12 week year is. The goals i want to achieve are all personal and not even productivity focused so I just can't deal with the smart goals, corporate energy type of stuff lol.

My therapist doesn’t like overly ambitious goals for me. She is more concerned about my sleep and downtime. When I was young I pushed really hard. It can be a way to success, but you have to balance.

I started listening to the 12 Week Year and only got 5-10% in and returned it to the library. I love your gentle approach to the concept. While I am actually no longer working (age 73!) I’m a lifelong learner and want to shift to quarterly thinking about my finances, my home and my hobby of reading. I’ve always thought monthly and yearly (annular). So I’ll be interested in how you set this up for yourself. Your approach is spot on. Shooting for the stars and reaching the stars! Also your emphasis on mental health is very important. Hooray, I’m glad I stumbled upon your channel why I was looking for the perfect calendar. An ANNULAR activity!!

wonderful to have you here! You most definitely don't need to be working in order to use the 12 week year. As long as you have something going you'd consider a project I think it would be a good match

This video was also the right idea at the right time for me! ❤ I really like the idea of quarterly / seasonal goals but don’t understand why the authors needed to call them “years”. Love your more gentle approach. I also dislike that quote and it doesn’t even make sense - the moon is closer than the stars 😆
@shawnaripari
@shawnaripari Жыл бұрын
Yes!!! I don't understand either. Why not just call them quarters ! I was initially thinking it was a way to help people remove themselves from annual thinking but I just don't think so because at the end of the day it's still a quarter. There is some audacity for some random white men to be like "we're going to take this well established business principle and call it something new and say we invented it" 😅 I heard that quote a WILLD amount in researching the video and I thought my dislike for it was irrational 😅 like stars are at different distances away from us. Either way I'm glad people find it inspiring or motivating even if I don't

Thanks so much for this video! A lot of the more capitalist aspects of the 12 week year made me uncomfy, as well the tracking, so it's cool to hear other people had similar concerns and have a similar approach to life. That's a very long sentence, but I'll probably leave it, lol. Oh, edited to add that I do quarterly planning which is similar i guess. Might copy you on a ten week year,

I love this video thank for creating it. I’ve been watching it on Repeat. I feel so understood and validated because I don’t have a linear approach to life. And last year I worked so hard that I neglected myself and eating that I lost a lot weight. Not to mention during my menstrual cycle I sometimes don’t have the will do be productive and do income degenerative tasks which makes me feel worthless. I understand and value the importance of building something for oneself, but not at the expense of my mental health or self esteem. Doesn’t help to have a partner that invalidates your feelings. Men and women are not equal or the same.

I love your analysis of yhis. The whole "every week is a month" issue really didn't work for me. Quarterly goals are mich wasier when you only focus on one or two thigns, rather than annual goals that spread all year for too many goals. You can't actually focus on everything at once, so sleep & gym & food come first, to create a foundation for your beat self to show up for a new job or a big rpoject, etc. Its really just easier to consider that for wach quarter we could focus on ONE GOAL we could just accomplish that without as much struggle. And omg yes!😂 The "take 3 hours out of your WORK DAY to do non work tasks" is like a huge slap in the face to people who actually work, or have responsibility.

I really like the idea of using non quantifiable goals. Do you have any ideas on how you can incorporate non-quantifiable goals in a work setting where you have external deadlines and expectations?
@shawnaripari
@shawnaripari Жыл бұрын
Good question! I think the answer would depend on what you do and what your focus and intentions are (or macro level goals). If you were interested in productivity, you could maybe consider the foundation and the processes and systems you have in play. Are you missing deadlines at work or working efficiently? You could organize your files for work, improve note-taking, or even consider your workflow. How to get into a work flow, what is the optimal order of things etc. If you're interested in something like your experience at work, you could consider your mindset or what you consider a fulfilling work experience. Perhaps even think about your satisfaction with your own work. What does a satisfying work day look or feel like? What about quality? Do you feel proud of what you turn in/produce?

@@shawnaripari these are good ideas! I think working on strategies like note taking would be helpful. I’m currently in a writing productivity group and we are told to make SMART goals but they aren’t working for me. Maybe it would work to have a soft quantifiable goal (like write 100 words) that’s easy to achieve and then have the overarching goal being improving specific writing skills and strategies.
@shawnaripari
@shawnaripari Жыл бұрын
@dr.w.makeup5499 a soft quantifiable goal sounds nice! Going for something like 100 words or even writing everyday (5 min, 10 min) are both great ideas to help build consistency or the habit of writing. Going for an improvement in a specific skill set also sounds wonderful!
