The asparagus was first introduced to European menu's by the Romans encient food. Including cabbages, wine, olives oil, broccoli etc. For the first time your husband was talking in your video huh?😯👤😁👍

Hello Ann. Glad to see you back. I was waiting for your cooking video. Americans also love asparagus, but I've never tried it. I don't even know how much they sell it here. I might just try your method of cooking it. I just checked the asparagus price online and it's not expensive here in the USA- a medium packet is $4.00.

I'm sorry that I have to put something right here, because otherwise apples are compared with oranges, or rather, cheap green asparagus with very expensive white asparagus...🙂 You're probably talking about the conventional green asparagus for the price of 4 USD. White asparagus is many times more expensive because it is much more expensive to produce. Basically it is the same plant, but with white asparagus the plant is harvested while it is still in the ground. As soon as the plant is exposed to sunlight above the ground, it starts to turn green because of the chlorophyll. White asparagus does not contain chlorophyll because it has never been exposed to sunlight. The reason why white asparagus is more expensive are the high production costs. With white asparagus, harvesting is purely manual labor by people who are very skilled at cutting off the right parts of the plant in the ground without even seeing the plant. In contrast, green asparagus is simply allowed to sprout above ground and can be mechanically harvested all that is above ground, which is much cheaper. In addition, for white asparagus you have to prepare the planting in the field very elaborately (It is necessary to build long rows of mounded earth) and often also cover it with tarpaulins, which also makes the cultivation much more expensive compared to conventional green asparagus. In a quick search on Google I saw that a pound of white asparagus in the U.S. currently costs between 30-35 USD. It is probably imported directly from Europe, as growing this very special seasonal vegetable in the U.S. is hardly profitable for growers.

@@armadspengler2717 Thanks for your thorough explanation. The asparagus that I saw was indeed green asparagus. I am a nurse and not a dietician so I have the basic knowledge on asparagus. I will check the stores in my area and get back to the group with the price of white asparagus.

Wash before peeling Wash the asparagus carefully. Before peeling, cut about 1.5 cm from the bottom and (if necessary) place it in cold water for 30 minutes. This allows them to fill up with water again and makes them easier to peel. Peel generously twice Lay the asparagus flat on a work surface and peel the stems with a vegetable peeler or a special asparagus peeler. Peel generously and completely around twice so that no fibrous bits of skin are left behind. To cook Place the asparagus in plenty of cold water and bring the water to a boil. Let the asparagus cook gently for 5 minutes. Then take the asparagus off the heat and let them cook for 15 minutes with the lid closed. Remove them carefully from the cooking liquid with a slotted spoon or two forks and drain well.

@@annnafulag1875 Understandable if you didn't grow up with it.. In the Netherlands we say ''what the farmer doesn't know... he doesn't eat that''... Then the medicinal function of the asparagus remains as a medicine to clean the kidneys . In your case it can help to pinch your nose when you take a bite, then you also taste less, ha ha.
