Congratulations, Etienne. I gave a 78 page "book report" on the 3 patron saints of Corsica for my graduate thesis. I lived and worked there for two years. My professors kept pounding me about Saints Devota vs. Saint Alexander Sauli. They kept harping on, get this, why is there only 6 pages in my thesis about St. Devota vs. my thesis contains 50+ pages about St. Sauli. I had to explain that my research for St. Devota took me back to Roman times versus St. Sauli took me back to the 1500's. St. Sauli is simply more recent, ergo we know more about him. 🙆🏻‍♂️ 🇺🇸🤝🇻🇳🇩🇪

Wow, that sounds like a difficult topic with lots of challenging research. Compared to that, my research was straightforward: I just read a few recent papers and created a survey which was answered by 1,090 individuals. With this, I had more than enough to analyse already. Nevertheless, I also had questions why I focused a bit more on this, and less on that. But at last, I'm just happy that I'm now (almost) done with it :D

Congratulations! I'm super impressed you did this all in Vietnamese! I don't think I could write my doctoral thesis in Finnish! My Finnish reading and listening skills are ok and I'm working on speaking and writing, but it'll take many, many years to be able to write on an academic level. Very cool, that you managed to learn the language so well!

It was quite interesting to hear how your defense was handled, especially because I used to work as the departmental administrator and graduate program advisor for a language department before I retired. In the latter capacity, it was up to me to do the formal scheduling of the defense. The student would survey the faculty and then forward me the individual emails confirming the date, time and place of the defense, which I would then forward to the graduate school either via campus mail or by walking the paperwork over. Later on I did this via a graduate school app. As I recall, I was also the one who contacted the faculty to remind them of the defense, and I was also responsible to make sure that the equipment was set up properly. There was no charge for the room rental, and there was certainly no expectation that faculty would receive flowers! Wow! Anyway, congratulations on handling those last-minute bumps in the road - how fortunate you were that Thanh was able to help you with some of them! Again, bravo and well done! 🙌

That's really interesting. Yeah, I thought that giving flowers is probably not so common in many other countries. From what I have heard from most people I've talked to, most of the organisation I had to do before the defence was different. Thank you so much! And yes, Thanh has been indispensable and an amazing support!
