Story #1: The fact that Kate so quickly jumped to getting defensive about "infidelity" when no one used that word was already proof she was guilty of _something._ It's really no wonder that OP and his father didn't have a good relationship, even prior to this problem, because this dude is just straight trash. And the maternal grandparents of all people are even worse. This is exactly what is wrong with this "sweep it under the rug" mentality that comes with old-fashioned values in not wanting to rock the boat.

The "don't rock the boat" people are the worst. They're the reason people like the Dad get away with being so terrible, and why they become that way in the first place. That kind of mentality creates the perfect environment for someone to abuse others. Appearances need not be deceiving. When you cut out these people like the cancer they are you'll end up with the good relationships the don't-rocker's feel obligated to pretend they have.

It’s not that she doesn’t deserve to be sad and depressed, ultimately she’s in that spot because of her own choices.
