My Girlfriend Wanted An Open Relationship. So I Watched Her Drift Away, Found....-Reddit Family
--------
My Girlfriend Wanted An Open Relationship. So I Watched Her Drift Away, Found Comfort In Her Best Friend, And Took Control Of My Own Happiness.
--------
The story follows a man (28M) who believed he was in a stable, loving relationship with his girlfriend, Sophie (27F), until she suddenly proposed trying an open relationship. Initially caught off guard, he reluctantly agreed, sensing that Sophie had already made up her mind. What followed was weeks of emotional turmoil as Sophie enthusiastically pursued multiple dates while growing distant from him.
As Sophie indulged in her newfound freedom, the protagonist found unexpected comfort in Emma, Sophie’s best friend. Emma, who had secretly harbored feelings for him for years, confessed her love, leading to a passionate night together. Unlike Sophie, Emma genuinely cared about him, making him realize he deserved better.
Instead of immediately revealing the affair, he subtly hinted at his growing connection with Emma, watching Sophie’s jealousy and possessiveness emerge. Despite initiating the open relationship, Sophie became increasingly unsettled by his bond with Emma, canceling her own dates and trying to regain his attention.
When Sophie finally confronted him, accusing him of being with Emma, he simply used her own logic against her, refusing to confirm or deny. The story ends with Sophie obsessively tracking his interactions, realizing too late what she had lost.

"Open relationships are only discussed when someone has someone in mind." Or they're already cheating on you.

Unless they enthusiastically encourage you to have other partners as well. And have threesomes together to share the experience.

the the big issue with open relationship, theres at least one person who gets jealous of the others dates and it almost always results in an argument and at last a breakup

I find a little jealousy is good in a relationship. The most trivial reason is that jealousy in a healthy relationship makes you want to have sex with your partner to stake your claim. Making your libido much higher. *True* sexual desire is the best way to grow in intimacy.

the second someone recommends a open relationship you need to break up. if you say yes the person gets to cheat with "permission". 9 times out of 10 the choice is simply one person strong-arming the other. and even if you say no the person is going to still do it, but just keep it secret. a person only asks for open when they want to cheat but don't have to worry about hiding it. either you're a cuck or you don't know. you can't have both worlds. you cant sleep around but still have love. have some self respect and break up the relationship. she clearly doesn't respect you if she's willing to do something like this and not notice you're hurt by it

Thanks for sharing! While some people make them work with clear communication and boundaries, others do feel like it’s just a free pass to cheat.

People do crazy things for love. I became fwb with my ex, which was a huge f'ing mistake. I didnt like it, and she hurt me a lot during the breakup. Took me almost a year to realize all i was was a backup dick for her to f' if things didnt work out. Took a couple months and a good friend (who's now my girlfriend) to put me back on a good track. I'm better for it. The point is that you do crazy, unheard of things when you love someone a lot.

I think he knew the relationship was already over once she brought it up and OP just needed reality to properly slap him in the face before he could completely give up on her and the way she behaved boasting about the guys was that slap in the face he needed. If he had said no she would have almost certainly done it behind his back stringing him along which would have probably taken far longer to come out, possibly even after they had married wasting far more of his time and money. If he was able to just call it quits right out that would have been better IMO but I doubt everyone could do that.

It's most of the time a one-sided benefit for an open relationship whenever the other person asks for it. OP took the high ground and moved on from his ex-gf's bs to find someone better to have a real relationship with.

I keep posting this comment, but it is still true: If you don't want to be in an open relationship, say no. Tell that person that you are monogamous, expect them to be too, and if they want to be with someone else, then it's time to break up. Also tell them that asking means they have someone in mind or already cheated and they now have to come clean with everything or you will leave them immediately. There's a lot you can and should do to make your partner happy, but you should never agree to any form of polyamory just to make them happy at your own expense. A loving partner will never ask you to do that.

being with one partner, it seems to me, is agreed upon at the very beginning of the relationship. When you are in such a relationship, it is your job to take care of the relationship, questions about an open relationship automatically mean that one part is drifting away from the other and that is practically the end, because it absolutely kills trust, and there is an even greater chance that you are currently being cheated on

Well said! Communication and boundaries are key in any relationship. No one should feel pressured into something they’re uncomfortable with just to please their partner. Have you or someone you know ever been in a situation like this? How did it turn out? Let’s talk about it!

I find it weird but in all reality, why didn’t he just say no that he didn’t wanna do it and if she wanted to break up, they could’ve broken up.

Lets try open relationships. My place, you pack and go. Your place, I'll pack.

Remember, folks. You'll be destroying your relationship if you suggest an oprn relationship and your partner hesitates before accepting. Those who are monogamous form relationships designed FOR monogamy. Meaning, they might go out on a casual date, but they'll form a SERIOUS relationship. And eventually, that one will overtake your relationship, because you don't take relationships seriously if you're polyamorous.

If you didn’t agree with the open relationship why would you put yourself through that in the first place? Took Op forever to grow a pair and finally realize what’s right for him.

he could have just told her he wasn’t happy with it - he’s not communicated his feelings at all then he’s surprised that she doesn’t get his feelings. Either end it or try and work through your issues

A man who refuses an open relationship is not a good man. Men need to be more understanding, less jealous, and less controlling.
