Aerogels are a real-world material that are used for thermal insulation and chemical absorption. I don't think they can explode. Cool story none-the-less.

"I don't think they can explode"... yet. It is almost entirely made of ambient air, with Earth's normal 20% oxygen. What "this" aerogel sounds like is that they make it in an extremely high pressure environment of free oxygen. The actual aerogel, in that case, is simply a containment system for the second or third most aggressive oxidizer in the universe... free elemental oxygen. Only way it would be more dangerous is if it was made in a chlorine or fluorine environment. LOX to the 4th power? It is not quite as destructive as a nuke, but only barely.

In the Air Force I had many dealings with Liquid OXygen (LOX). One time I was working with it and little bubbles were rolling across the concrete. I stepped on one and promptly brew my boot apart. This was from a bubble the size of a skittle. Apparently there was some oil on the sole of my boot. (I wasn't hurt either, I just needed an new set of boots.)

While 'concentrated oxygen' can certainly create some explosion, the scale of said explosion is certainly exaggerated. Because once oxygen is in abundance, the amount of burnable material will become the limiting factor of the explosion. Except... If the original explosion throws the aerogel far enough to contact new burnables, there might be secondary and more chain explosions.

Well, as the tank impacts and splits open, scattering aerogel in all directions, to impact on everything hard enough for ignition, for those shockwaves to send the remainder of the aerogel in the area away faster, to then splat and detonate to send the remainder still off even faster, each overlapping shockwave accelerating the fireball chain reaction out in greater and greater .. naw.... you know what? "fFP!" Really does just say it best 😊
