They're one of our closest relatives but, without the work of scientists like Angelique Todd, we would know very little about Western Lowland Gorillas such as Makumba, a majestic silverback. Angelique's persistence has been worth it and has seen her earn Makumba's trust, allowing her to get close to this 200kg great ape, his harem of three females and his eight offspring. But there could be trouble brewing for these mighty primates - at the age of 32, mighty Makumba is growing old. Can this weary warrior see off challengers to his reign, and keep the rivalries within his harem in check?

Great presentation of the gorillas, Angelique Todd with her crew, and the project. A true relief after watching another film about them that really ended up with basically being about the German photographer. This is the way to do it!

I learned a lot from Angelique’s explanations of their individual roles and behaviour’s, having watched and been fascinated by gorillas from a child myself, now 44 I’m still learning thanks to her way of story telling and life associating their actions to ours for understanding, I don’t suppose she will read this but I extend my sincere gratitude for what she’s contributed to primates, and unfortunately at a great cost to herself on more than a few occasions from multiple bouts of malaria to loosing digits and almost her entire arm early in her career/studies, and as a spinal injury victim myself know only too well what devastating accidents such as animal attacks can have on one’s life. Thank you Angelique for a another wonderful introduction to Macumba and his family 🙏🏼

Wow... Angelic you are a remarkable woman. I don't think people understand how you and many give up their lives so that we learn about living and non-living life in our world. God has truly blessed you in healing and kept you safe from all endured. Not only have you given your life for the study, you've also become a loving invaluable person for the village people. Their is much more I want to say about what a wonder you are, but only so much space. •I noticed some zoo's in other countries the gorillas have huge stomachs. I don't think they are given the necessary diet to help with digestive system. It makes me so upset gorillas are zoo confined. Gorillas appear to have a system in nature, yet... even the females in some zoo's do not appear to follow gorilla laws- for lack of better word. It seems the silverback's have also forgotten their roles as they become more humanized in zoo's. What a lovely, knowledge filled documentary- much appreciation to you Ms. Angelique, staff, crew and village folk. •Please let us know if you've any books, other documentaries, movies, articles on your studies and it's life challenges.
@sheppardpaul529

The reason for the extended stomachs in zoo’s is not due to poor diet it’s because in the wild they forage for anything up to 5-6 kilometres a day through trees and ground so they expel energy whilst also eating which they don’t get in zoo’s however one thing they cannot provide in zoos is termites which is not only rich protein but also the termites act as a toxin reversal from the high vegetation they consume which in turn goes to “unblock” them faster…. Furthermore you are also correct that the zoo is in some ways damaging the gorilla because although they are fed enough it’s not conducive to a beach body because it’s largely fruit which of course is higher in sugar so in conclusion the lack of travel/exercise, increased sugar intake, blocked up bowel leads to this extended belly even in silver backs which is quite rare in the wild.

The babies are absolutely so precious. For each and some few particularly, *a follow-up documentary would be so appreciated.* Ya can't help but respect this Male Silverback, feel a bit sad for the 3rd Female, yet now know her status gains greater value and her baby such an important addition. Always want them in the Wild, yet A "Camp Safe" seems a desire at times. Abundant Blessings for all these animals ...

A very moving video. Very educational in relation to how things are reciprocal in nature. I think humans have lost that. These are beautiful animals and very closely related to us. We can can re-learn from them. Want to be a good parent? Throw your books and psychology advice out the window and watch these animals.

@Marten Dekker I know that bud leopards are my favourite cat, but it doesn't change the fact that kerschak faught a jaguar, it was a Disney fuck up, silverbacks live in North Africa obviously, and leopards live on the savanna plains, and leopards are also found in the middle east as far as Israel Lebanon Iran Iraq and Syria ect, I know about cats bud👍
@jamesodonnell7062
@jamesodonnell7062 3 жыл бұрын
@Marten Dekker u may be correct about the gorilla's, but there have been cases of gorrilas living north of the continent, and leopards do live in savanna because they share territory with lions hyenas ect and I know they live in forested areas, as leopards are the most spread out of all big cats in the world, they live in the himalayan mountains, to the Egyptian desert, and Indian forests, and African savanna.

I think that this woman and others like her should take the blame for the demise of these beautiful great apes. By closely following them it has made the apes think that all humans are friendly and are not a threat, therefore making it easy for the poachers to get close to their target. As humans we have destroyed this planet. I would love to see these great apes up close and personal but I respect them too much. All these tourists booking holidays just to see the apes in their habitat should be stopped. The more tourists that go there the more damage to the apes and the forests.

You are so wrong it is because of the people who visit them that Is why they are still here especially the mountain gorilla. They become accustomed to the scientists who visit them and they don't just go o yeah right we can now go approach a a random group of people.. If they don't employ the local people to protect them and enable them to become rangers to protect them the mountain gorilla would already be extinct because of poachers.. Most of these areas have now become designated areas of animal importance and gained the protection of their government due to the importance and of the input of people who want to see them. It's all done with caution and only certain groups are allowed to be seen by tourists..
