Anitra Jones, the grandmother of 12-year-old Jaylen Richards talked exclusively to Fox45 News about a battle that she and her daughter, Jaylen's mother, were fighting. It was a battle to help keep Jaylen safe. But it was a fight they lost.
"My grandson was killed like a dog in the street," said Jones..as she sat face to face with me.
The poignant pain of a grandmother. Jones, reeling over the shooting death of her grandson.

He's 12 years old. Don't let him out of the house if he's running with the wrong crowd and you know about it. Turn him in to police if you know he's involved in crimes. Did anybody in this family call CPS or the police for help? He's dead because he wasn't parented and disciplined. If you want people 'held accountable', it starts at home. When we were growing up, you had to be in the house by the time the street lights came on, and we didn't live in a crime-ridden area. Your parents required that they met every friend you hung around with, and usually knew who their parents were.

Sad thing is when folks speak to people about their wayward children they become hostile and ask "how dare you tell me about my child" yet when that child grows to commit crimes or a victim of the life then societal conditions are blamed. However, things are just way different than when we 40 and over people were kids. We could have fights without getting killed after, we were disciplined by any adult and we never talked back, and we were held accountable and given tasks. I feel sorry for these kids that have no structure, no sense of community, and no respect taught for elders. Not saying all, but we are seeing too much violence and such with our babies. And it is not a color thing for those that will try it.

Parents are at least 50% of the problem by not knowing where their kids are bunch less what they are doing. Mother walks into Walmart and tells her kids "Go play. I'll find you when I'm ready to go.". My parts told me, "Put your hands in your packets and every time I look down I better see you or your ass will pay when we get home.". Guess which child didn't tear up things are Walmart? Guess which kind was home once the street lights came in, if not before. Guess which kid has never car jacked a vehicle.

My mother single handedly raised 4 girls and 2 boys. She instilled fear in us at an early age. We had to play near our home, she monitors our friends and if we didn't abide by her rules she was on us like white on rice. During down time and summer vacation she kept us busy. She enrolled my brother in a boys choir that traveled to other cities. She forced us to get summer youth jobs. And every Saturday we had to get up early for Saturday clean up. My dad was not available due to psychiatric issues. I always said my mom should have written a book called "Mom Rules." My sister raised her 3 sons and my nephew using the son principles and they are all outstanding young men. So proud. We don't play with these kids. Now I have grands and we stay on top of them.

By the time I was fourteen (the age I was when my mom died) I could cook any meal for the whole family if my mother was sick. My daughter, and her daughter in turn. are excellent cooks!! Our mother used to walk us to Sunday School and church services. We had bible study regularly. When our mother passed we were kinda tossed to & fro but the love, respect, and all the other teaching’s from our mom, and I’m sure her many prayers, kept us pretty much in line! Now, EVERY Saturday morning, without fail, is bible study via conference call spanning three time zones. Prayer & praise are a part of this weekly “gathering”. It bothers me sometimes when I hear people say women can’t raise her kids alone! OR kids MUST have a father to turn out right!! What of us whose dads passed away?! In other words I did things when my mom wasn't always around if I knew I could get away with it. It's the same thing now, so stop always putting the fault on the parent because the parents may not always be around. Grandma talks tough, but has no control. My heart still goes out 2 her bc of her loss. Blaming the mayor is senseless considering guns have been a problem b4 Brandon was mayor & b4 he was born. Lol, at 12 years old it's difficult to assign blame solely on his poor decision-making. This is the fault of the parents (if they were even in his life), his guardians, grandmother, and the community, just a complete failure that continues to repeatedly occur. We can't expect outsiders to come to the aid of black Americans when there's a clear lack of discipline and apathy toward education, responsible parenting, hard work, and respect for the law. The only easily attainable solution that could work is to disperse historically black neighborhoods into more diverse places to prevent the low income from living in concentrated pockets of hopelessness.

He’s become a child of God and is a very good person. I’m very proud of him. Thank you Jesus, I’m so sorry for your loss, my condolences to your family. RIP Jaylen 💖🌷💐💕🌸🌺🌹🙏🙏🙏🙏

Oh Ms. Gloria this hits home, I was a troubled youth due to things like domestic violence, sexual abuse. It was rough I didn’t graduate high school later, I did a lot of things to survive. Now my mom was there but because of the dysfunction she had brought into my and my siblings life there was no good communication as I began to get older and could see her issues and mistakes as well as my own. I had my son when I was twenty-five it wasn’t until then that I really started getting myself together, I still made mistakes like in picking his father, but if you really knew my circumstances you’d understand. I ended up being the best mom I could be, raised three boys. My step-son, my nephew and my baby boy. I did my best I promise you, I struggled to be a good mother i had days where I even had to take my son to work and school. I did many things for my son that my mother never was able to do for me, but out of everything I did I couldn’t keep him from the street😢😢😢😢😢😢. His father was never really in the picture, nor his fathers family, I made sure he graduated, had him in college. Unfortunately, the lessons I taught him about street life, he didn’t believe maybe because I’m a woman I don’t know. Shortly after his high school graduation, a couple of years he was put into a back against the wall kind of situation. He is now currently incarcerated, it will be a long time. But in this midst of our tribulations and trail God was still good and blessed him with a daughter. I never knew my father, didn’t meet him until I was 45, my son’s father even with all my son’s trouble still not in his life. Even if it’s behind from behind bars we will break the curse of the fatherless. I wish he had listened to me, he does to. I never wanted this for my son, Ms. Gloria. Sometimes I blame myself, many things I taught him were wrong, but I taught him what was taught to me. I thank God everyday for my granddaughter, and I pray that I can help raise her better than my mother did with me and I with her father. I happy to say she love her dad, and he love her. It’s my goal that she always knows that regardless to his absence, that she knows we as a family love her and will always be there for her. I am where you have been, pray my strength, days like today the weight of my circumstances are weighing me down. God bless you and yours

@@biaccagreen7157 Thank you Ms Green for responding, it sounds similar to a lot of families as well as mine. It’s so hard to raise children without any kind of support from the fathers, but his family are not helping when he’s in jail or just absent. It was a long struggle, but I’m so glad that I can dust my shoulders off, I made it through. Now I look back with no regrets, I’m a firm believer that everything happened for a reason. You’ll be fine as long as you’re trying and your doing right by your family. You still have so much to be grateful for. I’m gonna pray for y’all and I’m hoping GOD continues to bless you and your family. We are so strong as women, Hod is not gonna give us to much to handle, so you hang in there. You’re good. 👍🥰🙏🙏🙏🌺💖🌸💐⭐️🌟😇😇I love something you said, you’re giving your children something you didn’t get from your mother growing up. That’s beautiful, I to followed that method, love and lots of hugs and kisses, and encouragement. I don’t blame my mom , she had 13 children so it wasn’t that easy for her , Understanding and forgiveness are very powerful together. So hang in there honey, stay strong !!!!! Patience is beautiful too.

OMG. I honestly cannot tolerate people like this grandmother. Accountability is the FURTHEST thing from these type of people's mind!!! When thier kinfolk are literally CAUSING TERROR on others, they think it's cute! But as soonnnnnnnnn as that same pressure show up for them, they're the exception to the rule. Please miss me. I personally know ignorant minded adults who think like this and wanted all the sympathy from the highest mountain top when it was their turn. Please get away from me with this hypocrisy!

Parents need to start parenting their kids from the start and not waiting until they get older. I remember when my son stole some chips out of the store, and I disciplined him really well. Now, he has a degree in business administration and in the Navy instead of in jail. I made it my business to be in his business and his life. Now he thanks me and is appreciative of me being in his business and his life.

Accountability starts at home. Sorry for the loss of this young soul but there are lessons that need to be learned at home. If there is no one to guide at home, the streets will definitely do it for you. We can demonize those in government but it starts in the community. Communities are capable to drive change, they just need to be willing to fight the good fight. One parent who left the city said she tried getting in contact with a few of the parents of these troubled kids but the parents weren't interested.
