NOTE: I no longer own this guitar... and I have no idea why so many people are watching this video!
Something different, and a bit smaller! Never the biggest acoustic player (hehe), a 3/4 size electro-acoustic from Yamaha seemed to fit the bill nicely!

I love how small it is for playing while you are sitting. So comfortable for the strumming arm.

Great demo! If anyone is familiar with the Gretsch Jim Dandy or Gin Rickey(acoustic electric) how would you say it compares? Thank you
@MartinCliffe
@MartinCliffe 8 ай бұрын
Never played one, but the parlor body shape is different, longer and narrower, and obviously no cutaway. And the magnetic pickup would sound quite different to the piezo in the Yamaha. The Gretsch has a more conventional scale length (24" vs 22¾") too, so probably feels like a more normal guitar neck.

You mentioned maybe trying different string gauges and different tunings. What have you tried? I 'm in the market for a travel guitar and one of these is on craigslist for $150. Hope to get it for $120.
@MartinCliffe
@MartinCliffe 6 жыл бұрын
Mostly just the 12-56s for standard tuning or drop D, and then 10-47 tuned up to G (GCFBbDG). I've done bits in DADGAD and CGDGAE, but not so much on this guitar. It's definitely not my favourite guitar to play, but it's great for travel or just something different, and $120 would be a steal!

Hi I'm new to guitar and just wondering what the spacing feels like on the fretboard in comparison to standard size dreadnought. Just wondering as I have very short wide fingers. Great video by the way

Hey Stephen, thanks for the message. It's a long time since I've owned this guitar, but I think I remember it being fairly cramped. A thin neck but slightly longer scale (24-25") might be more comfortable for wider fingers. I'd try to get your hands on one, if at all possible.

Just ordered this one for my wife, she wanted the dark sunburst model but then changed her mind for the black model! The built in tuner is a nice feature

Do you get black finger prints when using this guitar? I bought two different ones and was getting it non stop . Even changed strings but nothing work so returned them.
@MartinCliffe
@MartinCliffe 5 жыл бұрын
I did notice this at first. I think it's from the stain they use on the rosewood to make it look darker. I always apply lemon oil to rosewood boards when I do string changes, and that seemed to seal it a bit better, so I didn't notice it after that. I assumed it was the stock strings or just the fact I was playing it in hot steamy India quite a bit. I don't have the guitar anymore so I don't know how it's holding up.

Hi, Martin I bought this Guitar and was thinking of bringing it to India! I wonder if you have any tips for traveling on the airlines with it? I hope to try carrying it on the plane, of course. How was INDIA? What happened to the Guitar?
@MartinCliffe

So sorry, I didn't see this comment until now (it would have been better to post a new comment rather than reply to someone else's). I had no difficulty travelling with it to India, it's small and light. I did have to let the cabin crew check it would fit (it did, fine) but only at Hong Kong where they're very picky. No issues at Singapore or Cochin. We had a lovely time in Kerala, beautiful place. I ended up giving the guitar to some close friends who have two boys, because I just wasn't using it. But it was great to use for travelling.

I would suggest to use electric guitar strings on that guitar which can make more sound and confort. Normal acoustic strings are so hard on that shorter neck and hard to band and pull.
@MartinCliffe
@MartinCliffe 5 жыл бұрын
Not that I still have the guitar, but with a shorter scale, you want heavier strings to maintain the tension, not lighter ones. Electric strings on an acoustic sound very thin and weak. If you use 11s on a normal size acoustic, you'd want 12s or even 13s on a short scale guitar.

It isn't a short neck. Only the body is 3/4. I mean, it's short for a standard sized neck.

Martin Cliffe I have a thinline Cutaway that I use silk and steel on after having phosphor bronze. It smoothed out the tone a little. I still want a smaller bodied guitar and this is the one I want.

Please don't buy it. I am not happy after online shopping. Frets are very small and strings narrow too. Sound is more treble so strumming sound is not good by using pick but only by hands ok. I am surprised to see why yamaha gave 21 frets in such a small guitar while they could use less fret to increase space to initial 4 frets which are very very tight and few chords specially AMajor hard to play on it. I am repenting after buying it so very bad decision for myself. Only looks great but not good for learners
@MartinCliffe
@MartinCliffe 4 жыл бұрын
It's a short-scale travel guitar. It was never going to be anything but this. You can't expect a great sound from a travel guitar. I can't understand why this video has so many views! There's no way Yamaha could have increased the spacing between the frets without increasing the scale length and thus the size of the guitar. They have to be the right proportion of the scale apart. And yes, for an adult or someone with big hands, it's a little tight to make certain chords. But for a child it's a good, very very affordable, starting place before you graduate to a full-size guitar. Or it makes a useful small and inexpensive guitar for travelling, which is why I bought it. Then gave it away to friends with two small boys.
