I thought brow was done, but perhaps not. What would interest me in brow is something beyond the classic proportions. As we age, our brows become thinner, or lighter, or more coarse. They droop. I would be very interested in information about how to address these things. What are the best products for darkening or thickening, yet avoiding the look of a brow that is drawn on? What makeup or treatment around the brow will appear to raise or even it, without recourse to lifting surgery? Or how can one work with the aging brow to make it look groomed and refined, but still natural and age appropriate?

Agree totally about the sewing machine. My mum bought me a really heavy metal sewing machine for my 18th birthday 50 years ago. It doesn't do fancy stitches just straight and zigzag for overlocking. Not a question-just thinking of you and the notre dome :Our hearts are with you! It was heart breaking to see the pictures. But it is not lost forever and it will remain the beautiful icon of France and place of awe and worship for people, the world over, to come and connect with (or re-connect. Thinking of you all as you process and mourn and re-build!

Hi Justine, thanks for the great book tip! :) As an avid sewist myself I would like to add a tip to your comment on sewing. As you say, these metal machines are definitely great (I call them "industrial machines"), but If you are a beginner and only plan to buy one machine you also need a way to finish the seams so the fabric doesn't ravel and protect the seams so they don't break. Therefore it's good to buy a machine that also has at least a zigzag stitch so your garments will last longer.

Merci, Justine! Delightful, as always: you convey such an engaging sense of lightness & playfulness, floating just above a solid foundation of knowledge, research, & experience. And it's always fun to hear what people ask you about. The hair questions are inevitable (but I'm glad you answered!), & the thrifting one was unexpected. What body shape is considered fashionable changes over time, & in thrift shops it's fun to see what was considered the average or ideal body shape in different eras. Because we're generally getting taller, tall people are at a bit of a disadvantage in thrift shops, but your idea of going for outerwear is a great solution.

It is sad indeed... But the valuable works of art and the treasure seem to be safe. The wood burnt but not the stone. The pointy tower that collapsed didn't have its statues because they had been taken down for renovation - so the statues are fine. They have scans of everything so it can theoretically be rebuilt identically (even if the wood partially dated back to the 12th or 13th century 😥). It amazes me that the structure still stands. Middle-age architects weren't bad at all 🙂

Hey! Concerning the sewing machine, I would argue that a zigzag stitch (is that how it is called?) would be good to take care of the edges of your fabric. More advanced sewers often have an overlocker to take care of the edges, but I wouldn't consider it to be needed for a beginner
@katerinapatiniotis55985 жыл бұрын
Cookie Noisette You need to be very careful with the zig zag stitch WITH the parallel thread underneath |>. Practice a lot before attempting on a garment.
@cookie_noisette5 жыл бұрын
@@katerinapatiniotis5598 I am not sure what you mean. I was just thinking of doing a regular straight stitch to sew the two pieces of fabric together, and then a very wide zig zag stitch where one side of the stitching is in the fabric and the other is out. That zigzag stitch does not crosses the straight stitch so it is not visible from the outside
@katerinapatiniotis55985 жыл бұрын
Cookie Noisette The stitch I showed you is the overclocker stitch. Usually lots of domestic sewing machines have the overclocker stitch depending on the brand and model. I'm not sure if yours has this overclocker stitch. You can do this, if the result is neat and discreet.

Justine is so correct about Sewing machines: i have a 1948 White sewing machine. It has a dozen feet for special jobs like ruffling, ruching, rolled hems, applying binding, quilting. . all used with a straight stitch. Nice wooden Table and all, it cost $75 in great condition. You can't go wrong with an older all metal sewing machine. I have not used all the feet but reading the instruction manual nothing looks hard with *practice* . Also i have both a right and left zipper foot. Very convenient. Also with older machines, the manuals are available online for free.

Damn, there's something about Q&As that I absolutely love. I did notice one small thing though: the hair mask you use, I used to use it for a long time, I loved how it made my hair feel right after using it. Somehow, my ends kept getting dryer and dryer over the years though, they felt kind of "stiff"? Even though I had no split ends. It took me a while to figure out that the cause of this was the amount of silicone I was putting in my hair - and as far as I know, it's great in small amounts, it has a protective function and creates a silky soft layer over your hair. But when you allow it to build up (and maybe even 'seal' it with heat, which I do use occasionally), it feel like it turns hair into 'plastic' - which made me look for more and more 'repair' products, with even more silicone in them. My solution was adding a cleansing shampoo to my routine, maybe once a week or so, to actually get everything off my hair. After struggling with these "broken ends" of my hair, that always felt dry.. I couldn't have imagined the solution would've been that simple, hah. Haven't had any issues with dry ends since!

I love the idea to style a crop top (blousy I believe?) over a "skin tight" longer shirt underneath. I had been thinking about the same idea but looser (possibly sleeveless) bias cut blouse on the bottom (to skim over a tummy) and a skin tight crop top with sleeves on top.

For the person who asked about sewing machines, as a person who has been sewing for more than 25 years, I completely agree with Justine. You will never use all those "fancy stitches". I think the only people who use them are sewing for little kids or babies. Do get a good used machine. You should really look at estate and garage sells. Most older ladies had one at one time and since most young women don't sew, you can find them at a really good price. They are also easier to fix, I repair my own, than ones with a lot of electronics. I have sewn on a new, really inexpensive modern machine and have had it "walk" across the table when I tried to sew quickly. I own a Pfaff that my mother used in the 1970s, it weighs a ton and it still sews great. Check out Angela Clayton's channel. She is a young lady that sews vintage style clothes and only uses older machines.

I had one of the cheapest of the modern Singer sewing machines, which had lots of stitching options I never used and it broke on me after a year of use. I went to a special shop to get it fixed (since I like to try fixing things before purchasing something new), but the guy there told me that repairing it would be more expensive than just buying the same machine again. Luckily my grandmother gave me her old machine from the 60/70s - all metal and all parts are either made in Germany or Switzerland - and it sews like a dream! No fancy stitches, just straight stich and zig-zag, but it´s all I need. My Singer machine was all plastic and completely made in Vietnam, which spoke for the quality. I also have my great-great-grandaunt´s Singer sewing machine from 1917 and It still works wonderfully!
