For 24 hours a day, Lauren Spencer has life-saving medication being pumped directly into her heart. The 18-year-old from Lodi, California has a condition known as Pulmonary Hypertension - a form of high blood pressure that affects the arteries of the lungs and heart. The 24-hour treatment is designed to reduce her pulmonary pressure and prolong her life, meaning the teen has to keep a mobile pump on her at all times, which she tucks into a handbag, to ensure the experimental drug Remodulin is continually delivered to her heart.

She won't. The federal government, the state, the company that provides the meds and other groups will step in and provide the meds, probably for free, but at the very least for an affordable price. This video is just the family getting out in front of the problem (as they should!) and drawing attention to the disease this family lives with. They know very well that they won't be asked to pay $75K a month for her medications, but they are doing the right thing by putting social pressure on those who are working on a cure and who are working to bring down the prices of these rarely needed medications.

This is why I'm an advocate for a single-payer option in the US. Possibly something like Medicare for all. We are the richest country in the world yet we can't give our citizens Healthcare as a right. 43 to 45 thousand people a year die in the US because they don't have the money to pay for their health care. This is a political problem not a financial one. Not only can we afford it, it's cheaper for American citizens than the system we currently have and every other developed country has a single pair option in one form or another.

Mind you that’s just the meds. Not counting the costs of her dressing changes, her saline, her supplies and the hospitalizations she’s has probably had. I’m chronically ill. I live with a port thank god so I no longer have to deal with dressing changes or constant flushing. But I still end up in the hospital a lot. I was just there in February and my bill was $125k. Now again in the ICU with septic shock my bill will be astronomical I’m sure. Last year I had it I was charged $347k just for that admission alone. Every 6 weeks I need a biologic like chemo to keep me alive and that thing costs $52k every 4-6 weeks. So imagine what we sick people have to go through just to stay alive. We didn’t ask for these diseases. We weren’t looking to get them. They just happen and we have to pay the price for having them. As if life wasn’t already cruel enough. This world, this country especially, was not designed with the disabled in mind.

I blame the socialists on this one. If you want to raise the tax percentage on successful businesses and corporations, they will raise the price of their product. This leaves California in a financial hellhole, where all of the poor people complain about the high prices of items. However they caused it due to demanding higher taxes for the companies. California needs desperate help.

@MrKEMills 5 жыл бұрын
MegaBlade Americans spend more money on health care because there are more Americans to support and they don’t spend t the right way. Look at Obamacare. Obamacare is terrible. It causes a higher tax rate due to their belief that more government spending equals free healthcare. The only way I would accept free healthcare is if we had the same, or lower taxation rate and everyone’s taxes put towards healthcare would be the same tax percentage towards healthcare reflective towards their salary. Socialism only makes the poor happy, but it makes the middle class and wealthy in a terrible place in our society.

So this idea that 100% of your body will be donated is insane. Harper,I made a similar comment. These drug companies should be ashamed to charge these ridiculous prices. I can see making a profit, but they are very greedy. Karma will come to them. I know someone who has to take a medication for bipolar disorder and they charge $400.00 a month. It is a newer drug and she has no insurance. Totally ridiculous, now she’s taking another drug that doesn’t work as well. Appalling!

@Alex Mack you do know the government spends money on medical research. Why do you think flu shots and other drugs are free in other states. Drug stores are no different from grocery stores, heck some grocery stores have them inside. If you go to Canada or Mexico, you will find cheaper alternatives .
@sortathesame8701
@sortathesame8701 5 жыл бұрын
@@cody1212143 Much of those cheaper alternatives are researched and produced right here in the US and are generics! When a pharmaceutical company takes on a new medication, it spends hundreds of millions on research and development, but for a drug that only a few will use, those costs go up exponentially, meaning one drug could cost billions to bring to production. If the medication is not in high demand, that cost is going to be spread among very few users. In order to help pay for the research and development costs, pharmaceutical companies are allowed to have exclusive use of the product for a period of usually 10 years. Then other companies can produce and sell generics of those medication. There is simply not enough interest or money to be made to support producing a generic of a drug that only a very few will need, so generics are seldom produced for drugs that only a few will need. THAT is why these drugs remain so costly! The choice is either pay a lot for the medication and have one pharmaceutical company produce it at great expense to themselves or have no drug at all for those with rare illnesses. In fact, the reason there are so very few drugs under going research and development for drugs that are only used by a few is because even at $75,000 a month, the drug company that developed it is never going to recoup the billions it spent on development...other drugs must be sold at higher cost in order for them to continue work on drugs for rare conditions. The numbers seem unreal to us, but that is just what it costs to bring these drugs to those with rare conditions. Some of that is due to the government requirements for drug production in the US. In many countries, drugs are produced and tested on humans without undergoing nearly the same trials that must be done here in the US. In order to have that happen, these other countries place caps on the amount someone who is made sick by less tested medications cannot sue for the massive sums of money they might receive in the US.

I can't stop thinking about when she said some people are immune to this drug... So you can't use it forever. To live with the fact that someday the one thing keeping you alive just won't, it's scary man. May God give her and her mother all the strength in the world❤️

SO happy that this is being shared. I also suffer from Pulmonary Hypertension and have the exact same pump/line. Though I use Veletri instead of Romadulin. Keep being strong girl! Also good luck in Nursing school! I’m in my third year of Nursing school and I absolutely love it❤️

JulieMarie, I also use the same pump/line and I use Veletri. My specialist said I'm a good candidate to switch over to Remodulin when the implantable pump becomes available in our hospital.

meds have no right to be that expensive. healthy people don't have a tax on living like sick people do. it's horrid that people benefit off of suffering like that

That is such a good way of putting it! A tax on living! My medications cost a couple thousand a month. I can't imagine anything more! It's insane.
@sortathesame8701
@sortathesame8701 5 жыл бұрын
We all are part of a genetic lottery and those with congenital illnesses, such as myself, just drew the short straw. It isn't a tax on living, it is just that due to our misfortune we use up for more in of our countries health care dollar than someone who is healthy. It makes sense for us to have to pay for part of our own need. This young girl will pay nothing until she is 21 and then she will still only pay a small portion of the total it will cost to cover her medical care. The pharmaceutical companies will provide this experimental drug to her for as long as she needs it, because basically she entered into a medical trial and they are going to want to watch her as long as possible to see how the drug plays out in the long run. In the US we don't have nationalized healthcare, but we do have specialized programs and doctors who donate time and efforts in helping those who cannot afford to help themselves. My younger sister received nearly a million dollars worth of surgery, testing, chemo and radiation for Melanoma 15 years ago. She had no insurance, but her treatment cost her nothing because of the way our programs worked BEFORE Obamacare. Unfortunately, that program has made it nearly impossible for the free clinics and hospital donor programs to function. They are now required to meet everything in Obamacare or shut down. Far too many have shut down! My older sister, who also has no insurance because of the rising costs due to Obamacare, just happened to see a mobile mammogram van going through her neighborhood and decided to get one taken since she hadn't had one since her local clinic shut down. They found a cancerous spot and she was able to have a lumpectomy, with no additional treatment needed. The van is paid for with donations and goes through poor neighborhoods offering free mammograms and because that is all they do they have managed to avoid the punishments inflicted on free clinics by the Obamacare laws.

They need it that expensive. If you don’t pay a lot of money, they obviously cannot research correctly or try and find a cure. Also, if it wasn’t expensive she wouldn’t get good drugs and she would die 😑🤦🏽‍♀️

My mom had PAH for almost 10 years and after a double lung transplant 1.5 years ago, she is doing extremely well. I know PAH is an incredibly difficult disease to cope with, and I can’t imagine having it alongside trying to raise 3 kids, but there is hope. I wish you the best in the future with whatever gets thrown in your way. ❤️

I don’t understand why people try to make things for difficult especially for people that already have it hard. Having to pay for healthcare, or even student loans no matter how much they cost sounds so annoying to have to pay for something you know you wouldn’t have to do anywhere else but America. Honestly if I had to pay that much a year to keep me alive cause the government is too selfish to take care of its citizens, I would leave. I hope she’s doing well, love from 🇳🇴
