As a potter, it makes me feel so good when people show off Pottery. Not only because of the time and effort that goes into it but to have someone else appreciate what they have made. For myself, I have no biological children and I think of my Pottery as a small part of me that will carry-on after I leave this earth. And I hope one day someone like you will be excited to show off that little piece of my heart that still exist.

This vlog about Jess's pottery collection fits so well with the intentionality that Roots & Refuge promotes: not just buying "things," but supporting small-business makers and choosing to place things in our homes that have meaningful stories. ❤ Such a good reminder of living to thrive and not just survive.

"kintsugi" is the japanese art of repairing broken pottery in a decorative fashion, adding gold flake to the glue so the break is highlighted in the finished repair. the cup or bowl is preserved, and made more unique and beautiful because of the damage.

I did that with a pottery bowl my son sent me as a gift after it arrived broken. He was disappointed when I told him it arrived broken but was every happy when he came to visit and saw that I had put it back together with gold colored epoxy and had it on display in my living room with the cracked part visible.

I remember the day you showed the mug from your friend who passed away and I sat and cried for you and my friend that I had recently passed away as well. My husband took me out that day and we stopped by a local pottery store and I picked up a mug to have my coffee with to remember my friend each morning while I am having my coffee. You have a beautiful collection and the stories that they trigger are just as precious. Thanks for sharing your collection with us.

I love the look of handmade pottery. I never got to try pottery in school because my anxiety disorder/ agoraphobia got so bad I left public school for homeschool partway through 10th grade, but I remember loving working with clay in lower grades and always thought it'd be fun to try the pottery wheel someday. I collect Winnie the Pooh dishes (well, practically anything Pooh but am focusing on housewares). When I was little, one of the few dreams I had about when I was on my own was to have a house decorated entirely in Winnie the Pooh. At the time I wished it, Pooh was on everything. But by the time I was on my own, he was harder to find, and I couldn't afford the prices anyway. So I changed my decor to bees and honey, figuring that'd go well with any Pooh items I could get. But these past few years have been really good for finding Pooh dishes at discount stores like HomeGoods. And Hobby Lobby has had several nice wall art. I've had to stop buying mugs because I have a full cupboard. My favorite is taller and was made to look like a tree trunk, and looks like Pooh's gotten himself wedged in a honey tree. His head and arms are sticking out on the front and his rear end is sticking out the opposite side. The handle also has holes in it for storing a honey dipper. I don't drink coffee and only drink hot tea when I'm cold, but I use the mugs for most beverages.

Jess, I can really feel the potter's energy in their art. Handmade is special. Pottery, glass, paintings & stained glass etc one of a kind. It was made especially for me to find at the thrift store, Etsy to admire & commit to. When things break, I save shards to use in mosaic, jewelry or decorate succulent bowls. Same with fossils, shells pretty rocks! I am the architect of what gives meaning & beauty to my life. Nothing is wasted. Why viewers would criticize your clay collection is beyond me. Don't close your heart to beautiful and meaningful please❣It is the Higher vibration. ❤

My dear Jess…I cannot express in words how much I adore you and how happy I am to have found your channel several years ago! I took a pottery class in high school as well. Absolutely loved it! For various reasons I never did anything with that love but it was just something about holding that mud or dirt in my hands…it was like feeling the earth for me. I wonder if that was the draw? Anyway fast forward to today…over the past several years I’ve been buying pottery too because you told me that I could buy the lovely things and not feel guilty! So I did! I probably have 20 mugs and I don’t drink coffee! Lol but I also have bowls and tumblers that I adore every time I take them out of the cabinet. It brings me so much joy just like watching your videos. Thank you SO MUCH for all that you’ve taught me…yes a 54 year old woman…I needed you and your wisdom with your beautiful poetic heart and rose colored glasses outlook on life. I just wanted you to know that there’s so many hearts and lives you’ve touched. I don’t think you could even fathom. I got to get a few bowls and one or two mugs from Hailey Rose because I fell in love with yours. No one is allowed to touch that one! Lol one potter I think you’d love is on IG as mudslingingpottery. She’s a female owned small business that does really sturdy cool designed mugs and other things. Much love to you! Thank you for all that you do! 💜 Tamara

I cried when I watched you open that mug and just seeing her creations again and hearing that her Mom had picked up the baton is beautiful. I am so happy to see your collection! I will eventually be buying one from @rosaliebrushworks that honors my late dog/furbaby, Chance. I already reached out to her and she's such a sweet, passionate woman. I was going to use my birthday money to do so but decided I should finish building my garden first...so I'm just waiting until it's financially responsible to do so. My hubby was out of work for 8 months and only just started working a month ago. I highly encourage others, if able, to buy gifts from small businesses, makers, and creators. They end up having so much more meaning when it's something not mass produced plus they often last longer and can even become something passed down for generations.

How great to watch your mug collection Jess. Monday morning in bed jus had my breakfast and I am sipping my black coffee out of a cup which I have purchased about 25 years ago in a "Dollar Tree" type of shop in Sydney Australia. I bought a set of 6 bit bigger than a short black cup. The reason I bought it because has coffee beans painted on them and the word coffee. Now I only have 2 left and I am sad if one day I don't have them but I am using them every day. I actually purchased another set which was a real shot size and gave it to my girlfriend. I have other cups like Koala painted but the coffee beans is the one for me. Since I moved to the country and even a bit before friends started to give me mugs with cow pictures. I do have a few but love my cows so I don't use them much so I don't break them. Love your collection. Maybe you can write a "coffe table book" with photoes and the stories with your mug collection and put the book out in your coffe house. I think people would enjoy sipping they coffee and looking through your mug memories.☕️ ❤

I can not figure out why anyone would have something negative to say about your love of pottery. My mother was an artist and a Potter. Maybe that's why I love pottery myself. I took 3 pottery classes in a row my senior year of high school. I think I cut out math to make that work. 😂 I have pieces of pottery my mom made that I can still see her thumb prints in, and it is a treasure to me since she is now with Jesus. While your mugs tug at your heart strings for Haily Rose, never feel silly for it. Mine is kitchen aprons for my Mom who passed away 24 years ago because she always had a apron on when in the kitchen. Last year when getting more serious about canning, I knew the smart thing was to wear an apron. I had some tears initially but then I made it a mission to overcome my sorrow. I made up my mind to honor my Mom instead of mourning her by wearing aprons. She's always with me but now she over my shoulder guiding me in my canning journey and telling me how proud she is that I am carrying on many generations of family tradition with canning, food preservation and gardening. Thank you for your wonderful videos and your encouragement to dream. - Rhonda

Jess, you need to take a day trip up to a place up in North Carolina called Sea Grove! It is a very small town north of Rockingham, NC that is full of small independent potters. If you go, the best place to have a meal is the local grocery store deli/eatery. I kid you not! Really, the only other restaurant is the Hardees in the gas station out by the highway. They have a pretty large store near the high way that sells the various artists work I think by commission but if you drive the very short distance into the town you can find each potters place. My current favorite place is called “Dirt Works” . Love, love, love pottery!

I understand your emotional ties to pottery very well. Kneading newly made up clumps of clay was very therapeutic for me mourning my father's death at 12yrs old. The mother of one of my best school palls was a very industrious potter at the time(all handmade) who preferred to work in silence, which was exactly what I needed. I was gifted by her son(still our pall) a big set of little espresso cups with saucers made in the few years following this time, when he got overstocked with her pottery. I use them often, though they are irreplaceable after her death.

I just received my Wild Pines blueberry mug yesterday. I loved the way her mountain scape mug felt in my hand (it’s my daily mug). So many wonderful potters! I did have to step away from some of the more popular potters because the stress of trying to get a mug in a restock that sells out in 5 seconds was taking the joy out of it. I love pottery, and I have also been collecting for years, but I collect bowls mostly, and I like you get them where I can find them and I have to take my time because they are pricey but worth it. One of the reasons I don’t collect mugs is for the very breakage reason I’ve broken so many that it makes me sad. But I do use them still not as drinking vessels but for holding things, and I’ve also put them in the yard or in places where they still get to live life and be appreciated. I really prefer to eat out of battery and do so every single day. It just feels better and makes my experience i’m eating we’re enjoyable. When it comes to mugs I like mine to be big heavy and to be able to retain heat for a long time. Unfortunately my very favorite mug that fit that category, did break and so I’ve been drinking my coffee out of a yeti. Coffee taste better out of the mug though. Thank you for sharing your collection and I think you could’ve shared the whole thing and it would not have been too long.

I love the mug you last purchased (it strikes an accord in me) with the harvest ready grain tops. Moving to Arkansas from California & packng all my art supplies into my camper truck (multiple times) help me rescue the 20 pound lump of clay used on the potter wheel I saved for a project. It reminded me of the verse about G0D being the potter & we his clay - your inspiring treks of free spirit trails makes a refuge for wounded souls & the mighty as well. I think the Japanese will glue broken items back together and use a gold element to highlight the connector cracks...you probably wouldn't use the mug again for drinking but what a wonderful way to showcase it as a plant pot as you suggested..I think the philosophy is that there is no shame to breaking then putting yourself back together❤ ❤❤❤

I believe that when someone is bashing something like this, they’re jealous and they can’t handle it. I love when someone shows what makes them happy.

I have been following her for a bit on Instagramand admiring her mugs. And I haven't watched Roots in 3 months. What a cool surprise to see you have mugs from her!

Those first few mugs were watched with a very tender heart. She is very missed! I had no idea her mom continued the love in her honor.

I'm watching this at 10 weeks pregnant and I used to be big into pottery from 15-20 years old and life sadly moved me away from ceramics but my hormonal self just cried big tears at your mug with your dog on it

An amazing potter near you is Marsden Blow out of Asheville, she makes singing bowls (like crystal bowls) for meditation as well as cups, wall plaques, etc. I, too, have a collection - makes my tea taste so much better cause you feel the love! A beautiful way to surround yourself - artistic pottery❤

Jess! Please, don't throw out the mug pieces! I love the things that you already do, but you should try kintsugi or making a mosaic with the pieces. It will keep the memories longer and bring new life to a broken treasure. You could even use the mosaic stone in the cottage garden, near a seat?

We used to have a toad that lived in one of our window wells. My kids named him Toady. I kept rescuing him out of there and he would be back in there the next morning. I realized that he was eating the bugs that came to the window. So I just gave him a dish for water and he lived in there for years ❤

LOVE your pottery collection! Planning a move and will need to get some of those! So sorry for your loss! My mom passed a year ago and when I see things she would have loved, I miss her so much.

I have always enjoyed your videos, for many reasons. What especially is great about them is how you often give a shout out to others to increase their subscribers or business as well. Kudos to you!

I love handmade pottery mugs also, I have to watch myself or I will go crazy buying them. I don't have as many as I used to, some were given to me and others I bought. I try to be selective of which ones I buy now. I love your collection, rotating them is a great tip. Thanks for sharing.

Absolutely wonderful collection! Thank you for sharing with us. What you said about the reality of grief hitting hard sometimes - so true. I had a housewarming party about 12 years ago, and a friend brought me a handmade tea mug and several teas in tins as a gift. I never knew the potter, but a short time later, my friend was killed in a freak vehicle accident in Alabama on a main highway there. I treasure that mug above others in my cabinet because the giver was a treasured friend and I think of her when I use the mug - and for a long while, that mug was "put up" and not used because I was not ready for the flood of grief I felt when I saw it. Now though, it is a sweet memory of our last time spent together and I toast her whenever I have hot tea from that mug.

It's amazing how many handmade pieces of pottery ends up in goodwill. I have to save them all.

Jess, I have done the same thing. Glue broken pottery back together. And put it in my garden when it is done. You are not alone in that.

Hey Jess! Thanks for sharing your pottery collection. Loved it! The first video of yours I ever saw was you talking about Hailey just passing away and you were drinking from a mug she gave you. It was very touching and I knew yours was a voice I wanted to listen to. Since then I used your videos to start my first garden last Spring. Then I did my first fall garden. Then I talked my wonderful hubby into building me an enclosed, 24’x32’ potager garden with 8 beds and 30+ containers. Will add 5 more beds next spring! Just canned for the first time yesterday (sweet relish) and sent my girls around our neighborhood with relish and other treats from my garden (Lol got them outside and taught a lesson on kindness 😊) I grew lots of veg but also grew Elf Sunflowers, snapdragons, Petunias, Verbena, Alyssum, Borage, Zinnia, wild bergamot, and nasturtiums! My garden has been such a great place to connect with God, let my bullies roam around while I garden, and just drink in God’s kindness to us. ❤ So all that to say your friend lives on in many ways and God has used your gifts and your joyful spirit to spread health and kindness here in my little corner of Kansas! Ty! God bless you bunches. Christina

I just bought myself a hand made pottery ramen bowl just yesterday and used it for dinner and loved it! I love to buy what I call living art, handmade pieces that you get to use in everyday living. Jewelry, vases, dish ware, tea ware, etc. I have small shelves in my kitchen so I limit myself to 4 mugs but each is handmade and each one fits a different season so I rotate through them:)

Also a potter and I'm not gonna lie, I've been designing you a mug. I've got it all drawn up I just haven't got it made quite yet. Funny that this is the video you do today 😊

Loved this video! I lived in Okinawa from 1980 to 1987 & did pottery. We had a chance to visit the studio of Kinjo Jiro. He was a Japanese National Treasure. I have a couple of his pieces that I treasure. On the same trip we visited the community kiln. Thanks for bringing that lovely day to mind!❤

Your collection is lovely! My daughter took a college course in ceramics which made me want to take up the hobby but it’s so expensive. After she buys her first home next year I’m thinking of buying us everything to start making pottery up for a side business for her at home. She’s talented!

I thoroughly enjoyed seeing every mug and hearing what you love about each of them! I also love the feel of a mug most when picking out what one to use. There is something so soothing or comforting about a good feeling mug that fits well in your hands!! ☕ 🍵 Thanks for taking the time to share your collection with us!

It’s a great collection Jess. Thanks for sharing it with us and telling us the stories and why you love each one. I feel the same way about some of my treasures. I am especially glad that you made this video because lately I’ve been too sick to do much housework and well meaning friends offer to come help me with it, but their idea of helping is to organize a garage sale to get rid of my “clutter”! I try to explain to them that it’s not clutter, it’s treasured memories of the people I love, and places I have loved, and special memories of people who have passed on, and all those little moments of peace and happiness in my life. Being younger and healthier than I am, they think that memories last forever and you don’t need a physical cue to remind you of small moments. They tell me that I can keep my memories, just get rid of the clutter. They don’t have to take the pharmaceuticals that rob them of deep emotional feelings and special memories and leave them with brain fog. So they try to shame me for having too many possessions from a long and well lived life. I explain to them that I have down sized many times and that I have given away everything that I didn’t really love, and even several large items that I did really love but couldn’t keep. What I have left is nonnegotiable. I thank them for their kind offer to help and help when I feel up to another visit, I will think of them, but for now, I am tired and need to rest. But what I am actually thinking is, “I am now done defending myself, my priorities and my beloved belongings against your misplaced shame. Please go away and if I ever, in a moment of weakness think to open my door to you again, this beloved object will help me remember how you tried to make me feel for having it and enjoying it and I will go back to enjoying my pets and my beautiful treasures and pretend that I am not home. I will keep what I love and my beautiful memories and you may keep your feelings of superiority and the shame that you seem to love to bestow upon any others who do not capitulate to your desires as to how they should live their lives.” It’s a good thing that I am old and probably won’t be here for the Great Reset. Owning nothing and being happy about it, is not going to work out well for me, nor for the people who try to enforce it.

Though I Have followed you for a long time, I don’t comment very often. I think my one previous comment, was about your mugs. One of the things I lover about your mugs is the big handle. I am very particular about my mug handles and like to put my whole hand in the handle. A fun thing I have done for a long time, is I buy a buy whenever I travel. Th us when I drink my coffee I. Have an awesome reminder about my travels. This was great during Covid. Thanks for sharing.
