I remember my mom told me she first saw this film while she was holding baby me in her arms. I have an older brother, so she was imagining me and my brother like the brother and sister in the film, and my mom said she couldn't stop bawling her eyes out.

What do you mean everytime? I saw this movie once around 20 years ago, didn't fully appreciate it, although it got stucked in my memory, back to it recently (around 6 years), and since then, everytime I feel brave enough to rewatch, I just can't get past the into in the station before bursting into tears. That I movie you see once, you tell everyone how great it is, but never accept their invitation to watch it "again" together.

I've never cried as much as I did with this movie. From the begining until the end. So painful to see this two child struggling to survive... I have a boy and a girl and theyr were the same age when I watched it. Very hard.

Recently learned that the story is based on an autobiographic book written by a japanese boy which survived as 14years old but his 1,5 years old little sister died due to malnutrition and he felt guilty. He also admitted that Seita was way more kind and caring than he was towards his little sister Keiko. 😢

This film is based on the war experience of this story novelist, Akiyuki Nosaka himself. "Like Seita in this film, I should have taken good care of my younger sister, and now I feel so sorry for her cruel death of skin and bones that I entrusted my feelings to Seita in the novel. I feel that as a woman you would absolutely appreciate Ghibli's "Princess Kaguya". It has a very different artsyle and it cost a lot and took about 8 years of production. Unfortunately the Western countries did not appreciate it as much as the critics did so Studio Ghibli almost ended up in brankruptcy because of it; it is slow-paced and very contemplative but I am in awe every time I watch it. Also it make me cries like a baby.

This a real life story, except the story teller died in the movie, because in real life he had such a guilt for his sisters death, so he killed himself in the story. Akiyuki Nosaka never forgave himself.

I was a child the first time i watched this movie. About 7yr old. I had already learned of death so i understood what happened in the end but didnt understand the concept of war and why we do this to eachother so i asked my history teacher who was shocked since here in the us we dont learn this till middle school. Well the darkness of it anyway. But he basically sat me down and tried to explai. War to a very hurt confused child. Have to say still dont get why we do these things to each other. War is a crule thing no matter the resons for it all it dose is produce more hate and suffering.

If you haven't seen them already, I'd recommend you watch more films by Studio Ghibli or Hayao Miyazaki. One of my favorites is "Princess Mononoke"! Also, major props for watching this subtitled! I look forward to seeing more of your reactions! Edit: Screw that aunt! She took advantage of these two orphans, controlling & rationing out THEIR goods, while making them feel like burdensome garbage.

4:55 You said he started gymnastics. He's saddened by his mother's demise but he cannot express it to his little sister thinking it might affect her mentally. He might doing gymnastics for two reasons 1. To distract his sister from all the misery. or 2. To get over his emotions by working out and hiding his feelings. (if you watch the scene they haven't shown him tearful or even crying while doing gymnastics), its a way to show his frustration. Because he cannot show the world he is weak since he is also dreaming to be a soldier.

This is even more devastating knowing that it is loosely based on the real life of the author of the original short story. He was an orphan adopted by an aunt and an uncle. His aunt was killed, and his uncle badly injured during the fire bombings at the end of WWII. He had two younger sisters that both died of starvation. He always blamed himself for the death of his sixteen-month-old sister, because he could not get food for her, and he didn't know how to take care of an infant. Somehow, he survived. He later became an author, a singer, and even served in the government of Japan. He died at the age of eighty-five. His story The Grave of the Fireflies was dedicated to his sixteen-month-old sister. He said it was to honor her. At the very end of the film, it shows the two looking over modern Kobe Japan. That symbolizes Seita being stuck in a loop, constantly reliving or watching the last three months of his life. I believe the author had to suffer through the same thing for decades. It is always the innocent children that suffer the most. The author of this was one of those innocent children.

You should compare this to "What Maisie Knew," which has some incredible performances primarily by Joan Allen, a wonderful child actress and a great Swedish actor whose name I forgot (he's especially great in very subtle ways, but also the obvious ones). What's so fascinating as a comparison is the movies couldn't be more different in lots of ways (no deaths or violence, and the family is just as wealthy as Seita and Setsuko are poor. But the girl, just a little bit older than Setsuko, also is forced to cope with deep unhappiness and psychologically process completely adult events and experiences as best she can. Both movies are amazing at presenting how young children process deeply sad experiences that they can only partially understand mentally. Grave of the Fireflies (one of my absolute favorite movies ever) is a vastly superior movie in my opinion, but What Maisie knew is also exceptional in lots of ways as I mentioned.

Heh.. this movie destroyed me the first time watching, but there's a certain level of catharsis with letting out these emotions. Although I admit, after the end with a girlfriend watching the first time, and me the second time, between tears she said "Why did you make me watch this?!" She actually loved it but whew... it's so raw.

Some historical context. In 1945 American new heavy bombers B-29 Superfortress finally could reach Japanese islands. But they couldn't bombing military objects and facturies (it's becouse of hight altitude and powerful winds). So, they decided to put some napalm in M69 air bombs and burn whole cities (most of all Japanese buildings were made of wood). I'm not telling you that Americans are pure evil. I'm trying to say that war is terrible. And nothing in whole world didn't worth it...except of money, of course. "War is a highest form of market competition"
