When I bought my new truck (2019 Ram 1500 Laramie 4x4), I changed the oil to Pennzoil Ultra Platinum Full Synthetic 5w-20 with a Mobil1 113A oil filter. I change every 5,000-6,000 miles. Truck currently has 120,000 miles and I have never had any ticks or knocking sounds. No noise whatsoever. I also just fill it up with shell gas only. 89 or 91 octane. I’m glad my truck is running smoothly with no noises and issues with the 5w-20. And I’m in a hot climate area, Houston.

a higher capacity oil pump is what you need. that is the COMPLETE fix for hemi engines 2009 and up. oil weight doesnt matter. oil capacity does. theres just not enough pressure to oil the cam and lifters at idle and at low rpm speeds. a higher capacity oil pump increases pressure AND amount of oil to cover the top end. thats the only fix for these engines to eliminate the hemi tick

Your body does not need higher blood pressure, because that is hard on your arteries but a thinner blood which means more oxygenated cells are passing through and around back to the lungs more quickly. For anyone who believes you can't put 30 viscosity oil in these instead of 20 viscosity, what it comes down to is the main engine bearing gaps on the crankshaft, now thinner oils will travel faster especially in cold weather, so a 5w20 will flow to the cam faster than a 5w30 will... However in the case of the 5.7 Hemi engine, the tolerances allow for up to a 15w40 in actuality, if you look at any engine machine shop spec sheets, its fine... race cars run 15W50 btw ( loose is fast ) I was told by an 60 year engine builder once, they run loose tolerances and 50 viscosity oil. (also the w, in 5w30 means winter rating, not weight.. stop saying weight.. The second number is the viscosity of the oil. In general 5w30 for the Hemi, in cold weather 0w20, in extreme heat 10w40. There you go.

The modern hemis are not splash lubricated at the cam. Oil flows directly to the cam and lifters. I do agree that extended idle times are bad for them, because of the low oil pressure that occurs at full operating temps with worn out thin 5w20 oil. How would the MDS lifters operate just on splash without direct oil pressure. Using thicker oil on both cold and hot specs will make the engine more quiet, but it will not help with the amount and size of the oil passages, hydraulic valves etc. There is a risk of some very small openings getting stuck and lubrication and cooling will cease to function in that area. Also as you stated several years of owners manuals had the owner running which oils since 2009, well those engines ticked and failed as well even when running THAT years recommendation lifter failure isn't new to this engine at all....its a design flaw which is why ALL the Mopar tech say one of the huge variables is idle time on engine not viscosity ran... Also in my research most lifters fail if they are gonna from 45k-75k you gonna need about 120k to feel safe ( seems like if they make it 100k they make it 200k lol damn)... There WAS a major change to this engine since 2009, iirc it was 2017 they went to a lifter with a much larger captured needle bearing on the wheel.... Lots of assumptions and misinformation, but imho your dead right they push 0w and 5w20 for CAFE compliance, where these big truck engines often hauling loads could benefit from a 5w30 and later a 5w40 ( same cold performance more film strength when warm )... However let's not let dodge of the hook for their design flaw here, my wife's ride turbo gas engine is specced at 0w20 running much warmer oil temps than my Ram down the road, with a much more complex system and Jesus she extends her oil change ( I've tried everything down to taking it myself ), a few weeks ago I was Laying under her ride in a cold and hot start scenario....so quite so tight that engine has another 100k in it easy..... Sad thing is dodge bolts this engine real tight, you add a hellcat oil pump and no more lifter issues, it doesn't have enough oil pressure at idle ( which raising viscosity can help with) for the way the black and MDS is designed... These engines would go 300k if not for the valve train....sad...but even at that if dodge stood behind them could give em a pass for it.... I know a guy personally that trucks to dodge dealerships there are piles of cams, lifters and heads hauled off...piles and piles of lifter cam failures... Best of luck to everyone and myself....lol

I did whatcha said, did my research and found like you said. They lied about their recommendations. I did the 5w30 oil change and now runs like an absolute badass. What I thought was an exhaust leak was actually the infamous Hemi Tick!
@rag52836 ай бұрын
The tick will typically not show up that early. The oil getting to the top of the engine is completely connected to engine rpm.Too low and the oil doesn't lubricate enough. Idling is the killer. Above 1,500 rpm the oil will be sufficient. I will use my gear shift option on my transmission if it has been at too low rpm for any long period.

And the argument over prolonged idle times. So also when I made the switch, I was running mid to high 20s psi at 600rpm. Now it runs religiously at 41psi at 600rpm. So it’s getting very liberal amounts of oil at all times! Extremely happy I made the switch!

The lower-cost 5w30 oils on the shelf seem to be out of stock more than than not, so this is an area that I have come to terms with by spending a bit more on oil. Since it uses a quart of oil every month, I’m not spending $11.99 a quart on Royal Purple.

Something since that Brand Rank channel started is how some filters may filter better but restrict the oil flow a lot. There's definitely a big difference with higher quality filters like Wix XP over their regular filter in terms of oil pressure and flow, the Mobil-1 Extended Performance also great on flow, but little less filter; however, if not getting a lot of wear, should not be a big deal. I was surprised to see Toyota oem filters flow great, but filter poorly and seen those dealer maintained ones hit 1million miles, so figures the Mobil-1 extended performance or Wix XP should do the job getting flow but better filtering.

Always use quality oil, like Amsoil. The other is don't let a hemi sit idling. The camshaft is a long way from the crank throws and doesn't get properly oiled. This is specific to the hemi head design as the pushrods are at an extreme angle to the rockers and to offset this they simply raised the cam within the block, which caused low rpm oiling problems. Probably why older oil is less capable of reaching this point and properly oiling when it does than fresh oil. You don't have to change every 3k miles. Just buy the best oil available.
@mypronouniswtf5559 Жыл бұрын
It doesnt rely on splash,it has pressurized oil system and it has oil passages/gallery above the crankshaft that keep lifters,cam etc oiled all the time.Look at the block! Funny the 2003-2008 Hemi is designed the same and does not have the issue the Eagle Head Hemi does thats the 2009-current Hemi.

The main problem with these Hemi’s is the splash oil system for the cam. Those head ports are horizontal not vertical which of course lets oil flow down faster than horizontal. Here is what I’ve learned tonight and in the last couple of days about these Hemi’s, especially the 6.4. 1. Splash oiling is a big problem at idle especially. 2. I’m changing to 5W-30 full synthetic. 3. I’m going to start putting a zinc additive in the oil. I’ll deal with the Catalytic Converter if needed later. 4. MDS we get turned off every time I drive the truck. It’s just a matter of mashing a button. 5. I am also thinking about adding Lucas oil stabilizer. I heard BG makes a good additive too.

How do you disable the MDS? I'm new to hemi
@Iwillnotbepushed2 ай бұрын
@@wowdude8244 You can disable MDS three ways 1.By a tune but that might void your warranty. 2. Use the manual shift button when you’re driving or before you move the truck and put it 6 or whatever gear you do not want to go above. 3. You can turn on the tow haul by pressing the button each time you drive but your fuel mileage will suffer. Personally, I just put the truck in six with the plus and minus button on the gearshift. It’s kind of a pain to remember that every time you get in the truck but it’s better than the alternative which is about a $4000 repair.

@@Iwillnotbepushed so disabling MDS truck will have high oil PSI at idle or will only cancel the cylinder deactivation?
@Iwillnotbepushed2 ай бұрын
@@wowdude8244 it only cancels the MDS. If I idle for very long I raise the revs to about 2000 rpm every two or three minutes. Just to keep the cam lubed. Although even at idle I’m showing 53 psi of oil pressure. That should be enough but these Hemi’s say no. Another problem with the cams by the way was the heat treating. It wasn’t holding up under the MDS lifters especially. Not sure why.

Switching to a Melling high-volume oil pump (20% more flow than a stock MOPAR pump) is a huge improvement in lubrication as well. Most hemi lifters that fail are due to underlubrication during long idle periods - most of these engines that fail are in trucks that idle for long hours (eg: police trucks).

I would like to see you make a video cutting open the oil filter on the 7,000 mile oil change to see how the filter media performed… I have a 5.7L Ram and the oil filter is not much bigger than what is on my two cylinder john deere riding mower… I run my oil changes out to 3,000 miles and I am skeptical that this small filter will go much past 3,000 miles without some oil bypassing and running unfiltered oil directly to the main bearings… And yes, I have tried putting 3 different bigger oil filters on my truck, but the steering aluminum housing is directly below the oil filter and they cannot be installed in the factory position… And yes, I could put a remote oil filter kit on the truck, but I don’t want to at this time.

Be warned, the wrong oil viscosity can cause VVT issues and throw engine codes, and when that happens, the computer goes into “limp home” mode with no power until you replace the oil with the proper weight and reset the code. The code will fire on the second ignition cycle like clockwork.
@BryanEnsign Жыл бұрын
The hemi tick is due to lack of lubrication and can be solved by putting the hellcat oil pump on your truck instead of using the stock one. That gives an extra 2 to 3 lb of pressure to push that oil up where it needs to go. Then you would tune out the notification on your dashboard saying the pressure is different from the check engine light and you will not have that issue anymore. You should not change the viscosity of the oil in your truck to try to solve this. I'm glad it's working for now but that's not the best way to take care of the problem.
@ZachTheRipper716 Жыл бұрын
A better pump will definitely contribute to solving the issue, however the hellcat pump puts out way more psi than just a few. Isnt a direct fit either. Just buy a Melling and you'll be better off.

I would stick to the 5,000 mi oil change intervals... And this is coming from another KZbin channel that's called " The car Care nut " with AMD... This gentleman has his own shop and is a master certified technician that's been doing mechanic work for a long time... The main concerned without going past 5,000 mi is because of degradation due to hot/cold cycles and fuel contamination overtime especially if the cylinders are not sealing well and proper break-in procedure was not done where you change the oil at 100, 300, 500, 750 and 1000 miles... The goal is to have the oil tested and also allow for proper break in done so you are mitigating and minimizing extensive wear and tear from the bearings and rings that are wearing in to provide not only good clearance for lubricants, but also good sealing for the rings once they're broken in. I know it seems like I'm writing a novel, but this information is important. This break-in interval would apply to any internal combustion engine. I know diesels have a longer break in considering the materials are more hearty to endure greater pressures, but I think the point is definitely sound with the fact that you want your engine to last 500,000 or more miles and still run just as good the day you drove it off the lot... How you take care of/maintain the engine is important.
