Hi, I'm Kat, and I make lots of DIY videos, about everything from DIY jewelry, home decor, gifts, and crafts, to Gluten Free recipes, No-poo hair care, DIY hair extensions, how to make sugaring wax and arabic wax for natural hair removal, and how to make a bracelet out of a toothbrush. Here you can watch videos about friendship bracelets, whitening your teeth with activated charcoal, or even skip on over to my second channel for Story Time videos and vlogs!
Shiny, Pretty Things!
This video is sponsored by Zenia Herbal, who graciously sent me my henna and cassia for this video, though I always purchase from them anyway!

Hi , I'm from Saudi Arabia and henna is common here since really a long time ago so we use henna with sider plant that you can find as a powder and mixed with just water and we apply it on all your hair from the roots till the edges of your hair and after that you wash it with shampoo and conditioner and leave it till it dries naturally and brush it and after that apply olive oil on all your hair do this routine once a week , you'll notice an incredible volume to your hair and fast length. I think arab people are known for their hair :) by the way the routine I mentioned is the old classic way

I just did henna on my hair last night and I am soooo happy with the results! I am a natural redhead but the older i get the duller my red has been. I will NEVER dye my hair red with dye again. My hair looks shiny and healthy and I wish I had known of it sooner. I'm really surprised more professionals don't use it for their clients wanting red. It was easier to apply than store bought dye and I was able to sleep with it on and sooo much easier to rinse out of my hair. AWESOME STUFF!!!

Katie C Salons are taught that henna is really bad as for your hair. They are either going by the old henna with chemicals metals and salts added or when they are trained by the big cosmetic companies they don’t want to promote natural hair care. Bad for business. Or when some clients come in wanting a major change in their hair it’s more difficult for them to achieve.

Hey I know you might not see this! But I am in the same boat.. natural redhead facing a real dull head of hair these days.... but discovered this and super excited to try it out! just wondering, do you mix with casia or indigo? or use pure henna only?
@erinlennon6036
@erinlennon6036 2 жыл бұрын
Go for it. You can start with something lighter and move to darker; if you get orange panic when you first see the colour, remember using a blow dryer will darken it up and it will darken up in its own over time - henna oxidizes. But as a natural redhead, you really can't go wrong with henna.

here is the Arab way of doing it :) mix pure henna with water only let it rest for 6 hours put it on your hair leave it on your for 30 hours YES! (u may want to rock a hat or something) don't use plastic wrap on your head only fabric,after that wash your hair without shampoo, then mostrise with oil and wash it with shampoo the next day extra tip (If you leave the pure henna stays on long enough to the point of drying on your head it will double up the thickness of every single hair)good luck

Huda Abdull Salaam Aleykoum, i usualy just leave it in overnight, does it have to be 30 hours or do you think it will be alright if i just leave it in until it is completly dry?
@hoodafff
@hoodafff 7 жыл бұрын
overnight is great for sure , but leaving it until it drys really makes the difference when it comes to" thickening" and getting volume of the hair that's already there, i remember the older women in faimly would leave it for a couple of days😅 just make sure it's 100% pure ....leaving it until it drys will do the job 👌

Great info :) Henna was my gateway into DIY hair color. There was a period of a few years in college where my hair was bright red. I finally mixed it with indigo (found you through your henna/indigo video) and I've been dark brown ever since. You make red hair look so good though, it makes me want to try to ease back into the warmer tones.

Cleaning conditioners work best for my henna treated hair. Also they don't dry out the hair like mainstream shampoos do. They retain color longer and if you have curly dry hair like mine it really improves the health of the hair overall. Keeps moisture in it and detangles too. L'oreal Extraordinary Oil Cleaning Conditioner is the one i mostly use and i love it. La Coupe Orgnx makes one too that i love but harder to find. For people who don't want to go no poo cleaning conditioners and co washing is the next best thing. Personally i find them much better for your hair than shampoo's, keeps your colour longer without all the fading sulphates, and doesn't dry it out. Once you start co washing you'll never go back to drying sulphate shampoos. It also gets your hair just as clean i have no issues.

I love that style dress on you! Very complimenting  I was so excited when I saw this video and that it was about henna because it was your original henna video that really helped me get the hang of using henna in my hair, I think I’ve been using it for about 2.5-3 years now? I get so many compliments on it now and because of my pale complexion and the fact that my eyebrows are really light as I’m naturally blonde, a lot of people think it’s natural. I have an old bed sheet that I put on the floor in the bathroom for all the “fallout” crumbs lol. What brand of henna/cassia do you use and where do you get it from? I’m currently using Light Mountain. Thanks for sharing your updated method of touching up your roots, it does seem much simpler than how I’m currently doing it!

It doesn't say what color the henna is. I want to make sure I'm getting the same one you use to get your red. I'm naturally a redhead(copper), and I've never used henna before. I really want to try it since I've bleached my hair to get it a pretty purple in the past, and now I am getting tired of using box dyes on my hair damaging it further. I've heard soo many great things about henna. And I think this would be the best way to dye my hair (a natural looking) red until my color grows back out, and a much healthier way to do so. So I'm glad you have such awesome tutorials with you using it.

Dear, use a pair of gloves to avoid staining your hands in the applying process otherwise henna stains lasts for many days before they fade away or get washed off completely. Hi Katrina, first of all thanks for the helpful info. I really relate to some of your story, I am just emerging from 2 surgeries to remove a tumour and although I didn't lose my hair from radiation it's been a challenge finding my sense of beauty again. Going through this as a young person is isolating at times, as it is difficult for others our age to understand I find! I'm also trained as an actor like you, although I'm doing more social justice theatre stuff now. Anyway was wondering if you made a video about your process and finding yourself again after illness especially in the film/tv industry? Would love to connect with you over this. Does henna make your hair darker over time? I really want to start dying my hair red with henna instead of chemical dyes, but I prefer something closer to a strawberry blonde or light gingery copper color. I've heard that each time you dye your hair red with henna, it gets darker. Have you experienced this,?

@MJ-xk8jr
@MJ-xk8jr 6 жыл бұрын
fallwhispers07 if you change your mind after using henna and want to bleach it you’d have to go to a willing hair stylist because the removal is a long and tedious process and that’s only if you used 100% pure henna and not that fake commercialized stuff because if it’s not 100% it will ultimately react negatively to other chemicals causing your hair to melt off(depends on your hair). It’s the same if you try to put henna on chemically treated hair. So unless your up for sticking with it for a while or having the patience’s of growing it out if you get tired of the color it needs commitment

Hi Katrinaosity, I am a colorist, and watching your video's, since I have a client who really wants henna and I am going to help her with that despite it not being professional. She wants it, I will do it. It is too bad that you had such a negative experience with hair coloring. I study about color and chemicals, that is all I am interested in. But I am still and always learning, and there are better products to choose for just a few bucks more per service. As I learn, this is all I intend to do and if someone wants my help to do henna, that's cool. The only reason it is not professional is because, you cannot apply any hair color over it with good results and so on. But and so, if someone is going to stick to henna, then they are good to go. Your hair is beautiful, I am glad things came out well for you, with all you went through. My client wants the red for a wedding, so I hope I have the right stuff. Silk&Stone 100% Natural Henna.
@Katrinaosity
@Katrinaosity 7 жыл бұрын
Cindi, that's nice of you to do what your client wants! Just make sure she knows first time henna color is a bit of a gamble for a wedding! You just really don't know exactly how it's going to turn out on your specific hair color before you do it. But as long as it's 100% henna or cassia, it won't react with any old chemicals in the hair. I do use a mixture of henna and cassia to get my more coppery color, but henna by itself will give her a really vibrant red. Good luck!

You absolutely CAN apply traditional (chemical) haircolor or even bleach over PURE henna (such as the kind Mehandi or Mountain Rose sells), if you ever need to... it is perfectly safe and you should get good results, just strand test first. The type of henna that you CANNOT apply chemical color over is BOXED henna (compound henna), which is not pure henna. Most professional stylists don't seem to know about this huge difference between pure henna powder and boxed henna, which is why henna unfortunately has a bad (and undeserved) reputation in the professional community. I get that applying chemicals to people's scalps is currently seen as more "professional" than applying a pure plant, but hopefully the industry will re-evaluate that peculiar notion at some point soon!
@jonathandaniel1592
@jonathandaniel1592 6 жыл бұрын
You can not apply any color chemicals to henna'd hair, even pure henna, until the coating that henna leaves on the strands of your hair is gone. It usually takes about 3 months for the coating to fade off the strands, but you can strip the coating off by massaging essential oil hair masks all over your hair a few times. As long as the coating is gone you're free to use whatever chemicals you like. However you can't really tell if the coating is gone or not because the color will still be there after the coating is gone.

I used to, but the music I used on it is a problem. The music artist later signed with Sony Japan, so even though I had the rights to use it, they did a copyright strike on it, so it got taken down after I disputed it three times. And since I don't speak Japanese...oh well. Unfortunately it was one of my first videos, so it was before I was saving backups without the music for such instances. I've been thinking about seeing if I can find a person here in LA who would be willing to let me show the whole process on a first time dye job, but henna is such a homespun, unpredictable process, who knows if anyone would let me.

This is a super helpful video for a natural redhead like me who has lost some of the vibrancy in my color and am considering henna!! My hair has also been falling/thinning out (I’m 23) and Im so worried/confused! Question - what shampoo/conditioner did you switch to? And did you start taking biotin/using any hair masks to improve the health of your hair? Sorry for all the questions and thank you in advance!! 💘🙏🏼

If you use pure henna, literally only henna, you won't need masks or fancy shampoo and conditioner. Buy henna for body art, nothing is added or hidden. 😊

Thanks Kat! It's been really fun to follow you for a few years! I'm about to do my first henna and have rainbow henna here but I guess I will order this stuff and use it since you have great results. BTW: you stopped using any other additives, like coconut oil and coconut milk? I liked your earlier color better for my own skin, eye color choices. That one you used chamomile tea, coconut milk, coconut oil? Do I have that recipe correct? I also have a lot of roots and some gray now in my hair. Maybe I will do one more boxed color to get it all back to one full shade and then do the henna full head application. Any comments on that?

I used henna a few times and my hair started breaking a lot, especially at my hair line. I don't know what caused it, but I have seen others online say the same thing. Obviously, that has not happened to your hair. Do you know what the difference is? I would love to get back to henna and away from chemical hair color.

Thanks for sharing! ☺ That's great you can freeze the leftover mixture. My hair is dry so I don't have to wash as often either. It's also as long or slightly longer than yours but yours looks really healthy. I'd love to try this to get some semblance of my natural color before it faded with age. I have to ask... is your water chlorinated? I have well water with iron, lime, copper, and other minerals so I occasionally go to the salon for a shampoo. Do you think my water would have a negative affect when using henna?

Oh, I did just that! Dyed with henna over chemical dye! :)) what does “melt your hair” mean? I am just curious if it did that to my dyed hair!
@TracyD2
@TracyD2 5 жыл бұрын
Lucia Tat Only if you use a henna dye with metals and salts added in it. Sometimes there is a reaction with the fake henna and chemical dyes. Don’t need to worry about pure henna and herbs. You would know immediately if there was a problem. Definitely always read the package ingredients. And add aloe Vera powder next time. It makes is more moisturizing and a better slip. ✌🏽
@katashley1031
@katashley1031 Жыл бұрын
@@TracyD2 actually, when compound henna melts hair, it's often from indigo. Metallic salts are also a disaster, that's true. This is why it's best to use only pure henna meant for body art, not compound hennas and nothing including indigo. Pure henna can go over chemicals, be lifted, etc.
@katashley1031
@katashley1031 Жыл бұрын
You'd know if your hair metled. It literally turns into a soft, gooey mess and comes out in clumps. That's usually from indigo, which cannot be layered over chemical color or removed.

But I have a question: I've read that you shouldn't use henna on hair that's been previously dyed with chemical dyes, because it will react & might turn your hair green &/or fry it off - but you said this is only the case if it's not "100% pure" henna - meaning no chemicals or salts added to the product. I had never colored my hair before (because I frankly had gorgeous color my whole life), but since I started getting nasty grey hairs popping through my previous natural golden-strawberry blonde/auburn locks , I've started using a Matrix professional demi every 4-6 weeks (for about the last 4 years). I use it on my roots only - because it seems to work permanently on making my greys a strawberry blonde & brings back my more youthful "pop" to the original darker strawberry blondish / auburn color (giving on-the-go "copperish" look you described), as it fades to my totally natural color - which I've always loved. But I've been thinking about trying henna because it's not only natural & peroxide-free - which would likely be gentler to my hair (though the Matrix doesn't dry it out), but because most products of natural henna are "cruelty-free", & I'm really trying hard to switch all products to cruelty-free products. Do you think I'm safe trying it over the demi color & may be happy with it?

Rouge Vamp I've found minerals in tap water can make henna get brownish. You can rinse your hair with apple cider vinegar in the shower and let it sit a few minutes (ex while you wash your body) and it will get out the mineral build up and brighten your henna. I use a spray bottle with half vinegar half water in the shower once a week. Also reapplying henna will make it darker over time, but she said since she is in sunny LA, it's not a problem anymore. I'm guessing when she uses a henna gloss over the ends, it deposits more henna dye that can get dark over time. I guess the sun bleaches out her henna enough to cancel out the darkening. Also her no-poo method of washing her hair uses vinegar which has a brightening effect on hair. If you don't want it to go to dark, start with a cassia henna mixture, then add more henna with each coloring until you get the shade you like. You can henna everyday, but it's better to wait 3-4 days between treatments because the color develops over a few days after you wash it out, Henna alone won't go darker than a deep auburn.
